Hi all
Just thought I'd give you an update on Little Pig. We went to Goddard Vets to see Anne today and she is very good - thank you so much for recommending her. Little Pig was so well behaved for her (he bit the last vet) and it was really interesting for me as she clamped his mouth open and showed me his teeth. She is pleased with his teeth and his general health and we are going to try coming off the Septrim and Loxicam as there has been no more blood for over a week now. So, fingers crossed that this marks the end of Little Pig's health problems... If all goes well, the next step is to find a new piggy friend for Little Pig. I don't want to jinx things, but I'm really hopeful now that he is going to be alright.

Oh, that's great news!

I'm really glad that you got Anne to check him over. Little Pig must've sensed that she's used to guinea pigs and decided that he was in safe hands :)

Fingers crossed Little Pig stays pain free. Give him a cuddle from me! x

Rubbish news - after less than a month, Little Pig's penis is sore again. Back to the vets in the morning. My poor boy, it looks really painful, almost like little cuts around the outside. Does anyone know of a cream or something I can put on it until he has his appointment in the morning or is it best to just leave it?

I know Carson has a sore Willy and Pebble's vet did a swob to culture and test to find out exactly what's going on. Perhaps this would be a good idea for Little Pig as it's a re-occurring infection, I would advise doing nothing at the moment as it could affect the results should you decide a swob test is necessary.

Thanks Flintstones - he had a swab at the vets last time (maybe a month or so ago now) which prompted the vet to switch from Baytril to Septrin. The Septrin was great and stopped the bleeding (thankfully it hasn't got to that stage again) and I really thought the infection was gone... clearly not though.

Thanks for the advice about not putting anything on it tonight - I've been ransacking the bathroom cupboards looking for something suitable, but I think you are right about just leaving it alone. He seems fairly chirpy - he's currently pottering about with his new friend Womble and they are both chirping.

Forgot to ask - what treatment did the vet give you for Carson?

Hi Little Pig

No meds as yet as we're still awaiting culture results which should be back hopefully early next week as the swabs were taken wednesday. However washing with dilute (2%) hibiscrub has been suggested in the interim

Bandit too has a willy problem (cultures revealed nothing of interest) and we are now trying topical surolan (applying to the sheath not directly onto the penis). This contains both anti-fungal and anti-bacterial and seems to be clearing it up better than giving septrin as an oral antibioitic.

Our current hypothesis is that Bandits problem is due to the fact his willy leaks wee into his cauliflower foreskin and then it causes a smelly infection if not cleaned every other day with hibiscrub. Why his willy leaks wee has yet to be determined but we do know he develops a sore bladder from time to time which would cause leaky wee However all his wee cultures have been negative for infection and his X rays negative for sludge or stones so until there's something to see, the cause of his sore bladder will remain a mystery

Might be worth checking if there is wee leaking in Little Pig's case?

Good luck at the vets and hope you get to the root of the problem
x

Forgot to add....it would be really helpful if you could find out from your vet what bugs were identified in Little Pig's previous culture and what antibioitics they were resistant to. I'd like to build up a database so we know what to look for in the future when other boars present with possible willy problems.

Many thanks
x

Oh poor Little Pig. Good luck at the Vets - really hope that you can get this cleared up quickly, once and for all x

Thanks for the help everyone. Pig's bladder infection isn't back, so it is just the external sores. He is back on Septrin and also Fuciderm cream to be applied 2x daily.

Pebbles - I only saw your post after getting back from the vets, so didn't ask about the swab results from last time. I imagine I'll be back at the vets with one of the boys (if not both) in the next few days, so I'll ask then. The database sounds like great idea. I don't think Pig's penis leaks, since I have switched him onto vetbed he always seems quite nice and dry round his bits.

Little Pig was back at the vets today as there hasn't been any real improvement in what I am now calling his wound as sores just doesn't cover it - I'll try and post a picture of it later so you can see how bad it is. The vet felt that the Fuciderm cream was not helping so we have stopped that and he was given a metacam injection and a longer course of Septrin. I've been given Meloxicam 0.5mg/ml oral suspension for cats to give him at home, but will be phoning the vets in the morning as the dosage instructions make no sense to me now I have thought about it. The area needs to be washed 2x daily and we are back at the vets for another check-up on Friday. In the meantime, I have one very unhappy boy on my hands (although he has perked up since being given something for the pain this morning). He is still eating, but not well and despite being fed recovery has lost a little weight (about 5gms so not too serious yet). On the positive side, it hasn't bled again since the weekend, but just looks so sore. I'm so lucky I have an understanding boss as I haven't been at work for the last 2 days!

Okay, here is a picture (he is a bit damp as I had just bathed the wound).

Ouch.

Ouch indeed! Poor Little Pig.

Is it any better today? Really hope so x

Hi Missy, thanks for asking. Pig was a naughty boy on Wednesday night and really scared me - he nibbled off the scab, opened up the wound again and I found him bleeding on Thursday morning. He seems to have left it alone since then and it has scabbed over again. We went back to the vets for a check up today and the vet is pleased with the progress. I think it is going to take some time to heal properly, particularly if he nibbles it again, but I think we are slowly getting there. In the meantime, I just have to keep cleaning him twice a day, giving him metacam and Septrin and hope that it stops irritating him so he can leave the area alone as much a possible.

Chin up hun!

The wound is clean and without infection...nibbllng itchy scabs is unfortunately what some piggies excel at and is possibly the worst thing for us slaves as it seems we go one step forwards and two steps back.

He's getting there...and so are you!

If he nibbles again then you need to tell him he will have answer IN PIGSON to his Aunty Pebble who will be round like a shot to "sort him out" ;);)

Hugs
x

Thanks Pebble

In pigson made me laugh (and made Womble, who is currently on my lap, jump).

Little Pig has been such a good boy today - no more nibbles (yet!). What a difference metacam and a few days make, he has been cheerful and very, very vocal today. It has been lovely to hear him and Womble wheaking in harmony. Even better, his appetite seems to be improving.

Pig sends his kisses, nibbles and love to aunty Pebble, his fairy godmother, and also to the gorgeous Tia!

I'm so pleased to hear he is now behaving himself!

C'mon Little Pig....it's onwards and upwards now!

Tia sends her regards but is a bit embarassed owing to the fact she still has a slightly smelly disposition :red....(poos are now formed but still distinctly "diarrhoeal" :...:...)

Ginger says "Oi Litle Pig - you may now be a part of Pebble's " Ginger Piggie in search of a nappy Family Clan" but would you please stop making eyes at my gal Tia:p"

Oh Ginger, Little Pig may be after your lady, but you have been added to my list of pignappable pigs (along with Willow and Finley)!

Little Pig nibbled again in the night. Not only has he opened up the wound again, he also seems to have made the area larger. He was cleaned and medicated after this photo was taken:

Double ouch.

ouch indeed that looks nasty poor lad. Stop nibbling!

Thanks, he is being such a good boy though. He let me clean it without any fuss at all and has decided that he likes metacam! He wheaked for more after I gave it to him today. Usually I have to hold him steady to get it in his mouth, but he guzzled it down earlier.

Yes its honey flavoured so loads like it. I'm pleased he's changed his mind!

It sounds like you're on the right track but just need a little time.

Guinea pigs don't know when they're onto a good thing though....you give him posh Oxbow hay and he still wants to nibble on his scabs!

Hope he can resist long enough for it to heal up properly x
