Lilly has swollen genitals, gassy, and losing weight

Lilly's home! We're so relieved. We have a lot of meds and thorough discharge instructions, but so far she seems to be doing well. We just walked in the door. Want to get her settled. Will try to update later with more specifics. But right now she seems happy.

Lilly seems to be doing well. The swelling started to go down while at the vets and appears to continue to be going down. She's to continue on her potassium citrate. She started the following meds in the hospital and will continue them until her recheck in 10 days: Meloxicam, Enrofloxacin, Milk Thistle, and Cisapride. Her activity level is good. Her weight is good. She's been significantly less gassy. We'll top her off with CC since the vets reported that there weren't many poos at 4 am today and we'll keep an eye on her weight daily for now. For anyone interested, I attached a picture of the diagnosis and medication section of her discharge paperwork (with identifying information removed). Thank you again for all the support! We are so grateful!

Happy to hear she's starting to feel better!

Have you thought about some gentle massage of her abdomen to help her with the gas and to help the poop flow a little better? Ive found that helpful for multiple piggies with gut issues for a variety of reasons (post surgery, newly adopted and not adjusted to new diet, bloat, etc)

Thank you for the advice. We did massage before she went to the vet on Friday. Not sure if we should continue it or not. Her belly may be a bit sensitive from the ultrasound. They had to shave her hair on her belly and sedate her. We'll certainly keep it in mind though and confirm with the vet that it's ok before we give it a go. Thanks again for the idea.

So just got back from the vet and the vet recommended separating Lilly from her cagemates. Not sure if we're going to do that or not. Was hoping to get some advice here first. Lilly has a bald spot on her rump and has for a while now. We think Chippy (the dominant pig in Lilly's group) is barbering Lilly. We're not sure though. Mites, ringworm, etc. have been ruled out a while ago. Today the vet noticed a small scratch that she said was "tooth shaped" on top of Lilly's bald spot. We are wondering if Chippy bit her or scratched her, but we didn't see her do it. We have never seen anything more than normal dominance behavior (rumble strutting and the occasional chase) amongst this group of pigs. The intensity and frequency of this behavior escalated slightly on Sunday when Lilly got back from the hospital. I wasn't really surprised given that she had been gone for two nights. I figured that they needed to re-estsablish their hierarchy. But we didn't see any aggression. I know that only we can make this decision and I've always said that if blood was drawn with any of my pigs I would separate them to keep them safe. However, we aren't sure if she was bitten. Does anyone have any advice or thoughts on this? Also, should I move this particular post to a new thread instead of posting with Lilly's illness? Good news is, other than the scratch, the vet thinks that Lilly is on the mend, so we're grateful for that.

Just got off the phone with the vet. Lilly lost 30 grams so we're going to increase the critical care. The vet informed me they've gotten the cytology results and Lilly has some inflammatory cells. 😔
It sounds like she might need a spay in the future due to this. It feels scary and I'm worried about her. Luckily, I have off a bit for the holiday so I'll be able to focus on helping her through the immediate infection. Wednesday next week she has a follow up with the vet. I hope to learn more about the cyst issues and discuss options at that time.

Just got caught up 🥰

One of my piggies has barbered herself and cage mate at certain times. It's been temporary. I would be wary of separating piggies unless really necessary like you said.

Well if she does need a spay in the future, that is really scary. My girl Buttercup really needed it done but we didn't have a vet who was comfortable with doing it, and she had other issues too.

Sending healing vibes to Lilly and hugs to you x
I would be inclined to keep them all together if at all possible, that’s if she is not been continually harassed and eating well

Lilly had a follow-up appointment at the vet today. They still see some inflammation. They are doing a culture to see if we're on the right track with the antibiotic or if we need a different one. We are tentatively scheduling a spay surgery for Friday of next week. He's recommending going through with the surgery if the swelling doesn't go down. They would have to keep her overnight. I just hope we're making the right decisions for Lilly. We have a regular vet, but this is the only hospital option. They seem professional here so I hope I'm making the right decision to trust them.

Best wishes...a spay can be lifesaving. If I had the access to a vet experienced enough with the surgery, I wouldn't hesitate. My Buttercup really needed it done and I think it would have extended her life - quality too 💕

Lilly seemed stable for a bit, but now she's back on the Cisapride because she's not been producing many poos for the past 24 hours. I've been trying to gauge how much critical care to give her based on her weight, but now it's more difficult to gauge because with not much output she's appearing to gain weight. I've talked to the vet and will continue to do so. I'm trying to just focus on the moment and take it one day at a time, but it's hard not letting my fears of the worst get the best of me.

So sorry Lilly is still poorly, try not to over think and worry too much. I know it’s really hard with a poorly piggie, can you encourage her to move around a little, it might get her tummy moving or a gentle message X

So two days ago Lilly started to look swollen on one side of her abdomen. The vet doesn't know why, but thinks it might be gas. This morning, when I woke up Lilly had watery crusty eyes. She also had a lot of poos and was sitting on a wetspot in her hidey. Like she hadn't moved from that spot in a while. I just talked to the vet yesterday, but today I'm going to take her in to be examined. Because of her other issues, I don't think whatever is wrong with her eyes should wait until we can get a regularly scheduled appointment. Pending the results of labwork, she is still tentatively scheduled for a spay surgery on Friday.
