Jasmine slowly losing weight

Aawwww she’s looking (and sounding!) amazing! :luv::luv: Hope she keeps piling on those grams now! Go Jasmine you beautiful, kick-ass floof!
Good luck with bonding if you try! :D Will keep everything crossed! x

Hey everyone!

Jasmine is still doing really well! She's zooming, head shaking (her equivalent of popcorning!), squeaking, and all round a happy floofy piggy! She drinks and poops loads, more than I've ever seen!

However, it's been a good 4-5 months and she's not put back on any of the weight she lost. She was a very consistent 1030g and now she varies between 770g-840g. It could be to do with the kidney cysts which she's on long-term medication for and that she's had her ovaries and uterus removed. She's due a check-up in December.

I'm not concerned, but I thought she would've gained back at least some of the weight she lost. Is it normal to not do so? Should I consider trying to fatten her up a bit more? I'd prefer her to be a bit more plump in case she gets ill again as she clearly doesn't gain it back easily.

I give her a scoop of Emeraid twice a day, and she's on 0.4ml Metacam twice a day (for bladder, I think; I need to check with the vet) and 0.5ml Fortekor once a day (for kidneys). She eats all her veg and plenty of hay, but doesn't really touch the pellets.

Thanks for your help! Here's a photo of the Queen Bee having a snooze. x

I think once they get a bit older, it does get more difficult to help them gain weight after illness/surgery. Holly has lost weight and although she’s stabilised am struggling to get her to gain any of the weight she’s lost, too. She’s also having an Emeraid top up. She’s not interested in oats and other high calorie veg can’t be given due to her bladder troubles. It’s a conundrum, isn’t it?

Hi

Can you please remind me how old Jasmine is?

From a certain age onward, older piggies won't recover their weight lost after an operation or a major illness. Even more so in view of ongoing underlying issues. But they can still go on like that very happily for quite some time if they are stable in themselves.

She's about 4.5 years old. She was born around March 2017. :) Thank you!

Do you give the oats as is (i.e. dry), or do you add a bit of water to soften them up a bit? I've got some bran I could try her with too.

I wonder if there are kidney issues then if Jasmine's previous weight may be not necessarily her healthy weight but inflated by some fluid retention? Old Jezzy floof and new elderly girl Luna both age 5 plus have fluid retention issues and their maximum weight isnt their healthiest necessarily- the heaviest is with probably 100-150g excess fluid build up that makes them look plumper but is actually putting strain on their heart... so perhaps if Jasmine's meds are working well now, the lower weight isnt necessarily a big worrying loss but just her new old lady normal without a misleading fluid retention bulk? Both Luna and Jezzy swell and shrink a fair bit with fluid bless them, with some associated floofy pant leakage that needs bum baths- they both send many feisty old floofy lady wheeks and kisses to Jasmine x

I had been giving the oats dry. But she’s really not that interested in them.

Just an example of the sheer volume of poops Jasmine is putting out overnight. :D She sleeps under the bath mat and when I peel it back, this is what I find! Jynx does about half of that! Jasmine also drinks a load more water as well.

You have a Poopy Jasmine like I had a Poopy Patsy @HeatherW. Even the vet was impressed by the amount of poops Patsy produced!💩🤣

That's an impressive amount of poo Jasmine!

Jasmine had her check-up today, and the vet said she was very impressed with how well she's doing! Her weight has been very stable (albeit she's never regained the grams she lost post-surgery) which is a big concern with kidney cysts; some pigs find it very difficult to maintain it with her condition.

The vet said she must be a fighter, so I said she is indeed very feisty. This is from a nail trim earlier this week...
