I am a bit confused here because there are two strains of chlamidia bacteria--C.trachomatitis which can cause serious disease in humans, but does not affect animals., and psittaci which affects animals but not humans.

This is all so confusing. I think we need to know what the actual facts are on this, I hope this isn't just scaremongering getting out of control, especially as people are taking such drastic action. :( I am very worried!

My heart goes out to you at the moment. You must feel so devastated! :'(

Also to you Piggybaker. Its just all so incredibly sad! :'(

What is confusing me though is the conflicting information with regard to whether this can pass between animals and humans. I don't know what to think. :-\

Taken from Merck Veterinary Manual:

Chlamydia psittaci has been reclassified as Chlamydophila psittaci . Several parameters of this organism are being reexamined, including incubation, necessary duration of treatment, and degree of zoonotic potential. However, current state and federal regulations governing the testing, reporting, treatment, and quarantine for Chlamydophila should be followed pending official changes in the guidelines.

Furryfriends I would phone Vedra for reassurance if you are worried- I'm sure she'll tell how serious it is :)

I have told my vet about it too, thanks for the info David.

Right if you are a very healthy person with good immune system you are in no danger .

People who are in danger from this are small children elderly and people with compromised immune systems , Psittici can be very dangerous even life threatening .

My immune system is none existen because of the chemo , ive also got shingles at the moment because of the chemo so my body is trying to deal with that , if i were to get Psittici on top of this it could poss kill me as my body aint strong enough to fight it , that why i had to have over 3/4 of them PTS and a good friend is now feeding cleaning and medicating the remaining ones , he could only manage to do a few and I'm so greatfull to him for that .

David xx

I really feel for you and you poor piggies I really do, but having Chemo etc you were already in a more precarious position than most anyway, a few of us on here, have compromised immune systems ( or nearly non - existent), I have Lupus which severly effects the working of my immune system and I know that if I "caught" anything from piggies or anyone I would be in a lot of trouble, I remember that Nicky has / had trouble too with a compromised immune system, so (my point is - sorry to waffle!) you were more aware than most that you were in more danger than the rest of us? Its good that you have pointed out that to a normal healthy person, there is virtually no danger.

I hope your results come back ok, and the rest of your piggies continue to stay well.

Regards
Sue

N.B. This is not intended to raise anyones 'hackles', merely an observation on a situation that we are all concerned about and now thanks to David and Karen more aware of.

I am very sorry for your loss. I had 2 hamsters before that died several years back and I was very upset when it happened. One died of pneumonia, the other old age. Your piggies were blessed to have you as their owner. know that you did the best you could for them. I only have 1 piggy and he is a major highlight and blessing in my life. Good luck with your other piggies and any other pets you may have.

WOW!,,,,,,,

I didn't mean to start a debate especially since i have been on holiday, and haven't been able to keep up with you all,, actually i am glad i couldn't what i have read has shaken me to the core! I am positive i have made the right decision, my children mean everything to me and having almost lost Amy to pneumonia when she was one and a half i just couldn't go through that again, and what the Juniper said has made me feel forgiven and I DID THE RIGHT THING to trust my vet, I love my girls BUT i love my children more?

Once again thank you for all your hugs
