I have two female guinea pigs, Molly and Lucy ( both 5 ) and recently noticed a few months ago that Mollys hair was getting shorter around the back of her back legs, almost fluff rather then fur(She’s always had course wiery hair) I just kept an eye on it and didn’t think this was a big issue. Last week they went to boarding where they are kept outside with sawdust in a hutch which I know isn’t ideal (usually they are inside on fleece) but it’s only for a week a few times a year ( they go regularly and don’t seem to mind it too much) after coming home I noticed the hair on her back seemed thinner than normal and her skin looked like it was flaking slightly. This morning it looked as though maybe she had been itching or biting it since her fur was kind of pulled and slightly wet if that makes sense. Wondering if this is just something normal maybe due to age or temperature change or a sign that something might be underlying? Thanks

Please do see a vet for a hands on check - there could be parasitic issues at play which require a vet diagnosis and treatment.

To add, that there is nothing wrong with being outside and on wood shavings per se - many of us keep our piggies that way. What is an issue is for indoor piggies suddenly being outside without acclimatisation if nights are not above 15 degrees.

Hi we had a boy guinea pig who had started with some hair loss suggestions were an allergy, stress, mange mites or Vit C deficiency. So we ruled them out one by one and he was fine could it also be hormone related with your girl? 🤔 Not offering official advice as I'm not an expert just sharing my experience 💐

Back of the back legs is not likely to be directly hormone related. Hormone related hair loss in sows is usually on the flanks.
