Hello everyone,
Need some help about my guinea pig.
i've a male guinea pig around 4 years of age and since last 2 days he is unable to pass poop through his anus, i am cleaning him out and helping the poop come out. Also the urine is dripping when i squeeze the anal sac for poop to come out.
Vet did x-ray on him and ruled out any bladder stone but found some gas buildup. Vet also pass through a catheter through his penis to see if there is some urinal blockage but nothing found.
I think the blocked poop is to be blamed for urine dripping. Just need some help if somebody had the same issue with their guinea pig. 🥺
Btw i am giving him some vitamin c supplement, ranitidine and simethicon.
Also i am cleaning him out every 3 hours. It seems the digestion is okay but not his muscles to get poop out of his anus.the poop is very smelly.
Sorry for my english, not good at it.

Hi
Have you and your vet checked whether your boar has got impaction? It is a progressive condition that is affection about 10% of older boars as the muscles at the back end gradually become weaker, which also affects the poo formation and pushing out.
Leaky urine is not usually a symptom, though so there could be something else going, whether it is entirely a different problem or something else coinciding with the impaction. Urine infection? Or a growth pressing on the whole area (where everything is very much packed around each other very tightly).
Here is our impaction guide: Boar Care: Bits, Bums & Baths

A guinea pig that is still eating, has a working gut; i.e. poos will eventually come out at the other end, in whichever form. A blockage anywhere is very painful and will result in your piggy refusing any feed - which will result in nothing coming out at the other end 1-2 days later (passage through the digestive system takes about 22 hours on average).
Please monitor the food intake by weighing daily. Keep in mind that hay should make over 75% of what a piggy eats in a day - and you cannot check that by eye. In this case, you need to step in feeding support.

All the best.

The vet isn't an exotic vet. He just did an x ray and told me there isn't any stone and the passage is clear but my boy's mammary glands are swollen and blue for which the Vet said these are mammary gland tumors and need to be removed. But gave me a appointment after a week. Could that be a reason? I've other piggies too that had mammary tumors ( removed later ) but none of them had such kind of problem.
He was pretty well on wednesday.

Hi

I may well be that it is all connected and that there may be a tumour in reproductive tract pressing on the bladder and the anus. How long as your piggy had had the swollen nipples?

Oh dear, I'm so sorry your boy is not well. I am having a similar issue with my piggie Dexter and passing poops but is down to issues post op. It does sound like he may be impacted, not sure about the leaky urine but if his impaction is causing pressure on the bladder, this could be the cause, maybe?

If I were you I would have him seen by an exotics vet, as in my experience general vets do not hold the same knowledge regarding piggies. He does seem to look a little swollen around his anus to me. I really do hope he is OK. Please keep us posted.

Not more than 2 weeks. I check them on a regular basis. Does vitamin C deficiency also plays a role in muscles weakening?

There are no exotic vets here, the nearest is in other state which is arount 1700 km.
The vet is not good in experience with guinea pigs diagnosis but he is good with surgeries. So just hoping may be the tumor causing this. Does dexter had the tumors also?

No, not in the case of impaction in older boars - however, in the light of both mammary glands being affected (with a tumour it is generally just one), it is more unlikely to be impaction and more likely either an infection or an internal mass of some sort at the bottom of your problems.
You do not normally get all kinds of unconnected symptoms very suddenly, especially in view of your additional information about the mammary glands being affected. :(

Please read the links in my posts.

Unfortunately, I am not a vet and do not have access to your guinea pig. Please accept that all I can do is guess based on the information you are giving me, and any guesses can only ever be as good as what you are letting us know and how you are telling it.

Hmmm.. lets see what happens after those tumor removal surgery. Also apart from this, does neutering a boar can lead to behavioural changes? I am also planning to neuter my boys but don't want their behaviour to change.

Neutering boars does not cause any change in behaviour - all it does is stop them being able to cause pregnancy (if you are planning on each one being bonded with a sow).

Hi no, Dexter's poo poo issue is due to him being neutered then having complications after. Firstly and abscess and now a hernia, so he had to undergo surgery another 2 times after his neuter. The anesthetic has caused his pooping issue.

Oh..okay..then lets hope tumor removal may help him getting better

So sorry for you both, sending hugs, I hope both your boys can recover well x

Hello everyone,
Today vet removed his tumor which was compressing his testicles. But it's been 5 hourse he is not out of anesthesia yet. All my guinea pigs came out of anesthesia within 2 hours but he is still not moving and muscles are still relaxed..can't even hold his head up
How long should it take for a guinea pig to come out of anesthesia? I am worried

Contacted m, they gave IV fluid and told me he might be in shock and sent me to the home. They assured me he'll be fine by morning. The main problem is he hasn't eaten anything since 11 am, its 11:27 pm here btw. Don't know if its a good idea to syringe feed him untill he is fully out of the anesthetic state, he may choke on food i guess ?

Please suggest what to do to make him recover? He is still lethargic and not eating on its own..unable to hold his head up

I’m afraid all we can suggest is to seek veterinary help. While they do tend to be quiet after surgery, he sounds to be struggling quite a lot more than would be expected

My Dexter was the same after his surgery on the 2nd December. When i brought him home after his overnight stay he was so lethargic, didnt move and still seemed out of it from the anesthetic. This went on for at around 4 to 5 days and in all honesty he still isnt back to normal now and it has been nearly 2 weeks.

He didn't eat anything for himself apart from a few nibbles of his veggies here and there for around 3 to 4 days and had to syringe feed critical care and syringe water/probiotics every few hours. It was around a 5 to 6 days before he began finishing his veggies and eating hay again. He really had me worried. He is still off his pellets altogether and hasn't drank from his bottle, I am still giving him watery veggies and syringing him water now. Also, he only started pooping again around 4 days ago, he has been on gut stimulants since the surgery.

When I visited the vet another three times after his surgery they told me because it was his third surgery in around 5-6 months, it may take longer for him to bounce back. My advice would be to get in contact with your vet and explain your concerns and syringe feed him critical care and water with probiotics mixed in.

I fed Dexter very slowly with critical care and water as I had the same worry as you that he may choke but I knew I had to keep his guts going. So sorry this is happening, I know how stressful this is. I hope he is OK x

This is good to know that your piggie is better now after 2 weeks, i am trying to syringe feed him but unable to feed more than 3 ml at one sitting. He stops chewing in and his mouth is all full of feed.
Now i am feeding him every 1 or 2 hours but don't know if its enough for him
