Hello all.

I have been away sometime, and lurking a little bit. Hope your all ok?

I thought i would mention to you all that we have now set up an exotic service in London at the Royal Veterinary College (Beaumont Sainsbury Animal Hospital) in Camden. I am currently the designated exotic nurse as i hold a certificate in exotics. We have vets Jo who is a european exotic specialist and Nadene who has around 14 years experience in exotics. We are seeing first opinion animals now. We have a separate exotic ward (for prey species only so no ferrets etc). And we have the luxury of being able to send our animals for MRI or CT at our referral hospital if needed.

I'm not suggesting people changing vets, there are plenty out there good with piggies but wanted to make people aware that we are here. : ) This is a huge reason why i havent been online much as i've been busy with work and unable to have much spare time to pop on here. But it is exciting times seeing lots of exotics and being able to treat them.

Heres a little picture of the three of us. (I'm in the blue). And this is my little Onion we took for surgery a couple of months ago, here she is about to be prepped, unfortunately due to a condition never seen before (and untreatable) she had to be put to sleep under aneasthesia.

Thanks for the update. Would be easy for us to get to you.

Aw I am sorry about your little piggy :( Can I ask what the condition was? Great to know there is an exotic specialist in London now, have you added it to the recommended vet's thread?

Thanks.

Don't be sorry at all. Onion had a blocked gall duct. Her gall bladder was more than 10 times the size it should have been and had almost ruptured. (we actually took a lot of pictures as its never been seen). There was no way of unblocking it or taking it out. Neither Jo or any of her specialist friends had seen/heard of it. Sadly my poor girl showed no symptoms up to this point, she was still eating/bouncing about literally 30mins before we put her under. No matter how sad I'm extremely glad i found it incidently as i felt the massive gall bladder in her abdomen at home and took her in for an ultrasound. I'm glad we could let her go before it ruptured, that wouldn't have been a nice way to go.

Oh I am so sorry & yes I agree, it was better for her that she passed away without pain :( That must be an extremely rare thing to happen. These little animals are so fascinating to me, even all the not so nice stuff I find very interesting (So many people have said I should have been a doctor or vet!) I would love it if my vet let me watch her operate on any of her patients, not sure if I could watch my own though :)

Thanks Abi, your practice has been added to the Vet locator and your ever growing experience in this field is of huge benefit to the forum. Hoping you can make it on to the forum when you are not so busy and wish you all the success in the world.
