Euthanasia and acute pining during lockdown 💔

From looking at the list millhaven and the potteries seem our best bet to contact for dating once this is over, if they rehome out of area as we are out of area for both but willing to travel 💖

The Potteries rehome further afield. I am not sure how far Jo Milnes from Milhaven is rehoming these days. However, she now offers residential bonding; the same as Cavy Corner.

I am linking in @VickiA and @Flutterby for you, who both foster for The Potteries GPR.

We do indeed rehome out of area. That wouldn’t be an issue. But we are closed at the moment and as Helen is an NHS nurse we are observing the restrictions quite strictly at the moment. I know that we don’t have any single sows. We do have a number of single neutered boars who are all out on foster at the moment but will be looking for a wife as soon as the rescue reopens. it would be worth emailing Helen to discuss things with her. The email address is [email protected]

Thankyou I will take some setup pictures once fluffy is perkier and send her an email, we have a large cage (8foot by 3foot) so it is possible she could be group bonded if she'd handle that, she has currently rejected every boar she has ever met but I'm open to trying anything, we would need to give her time to settle anyway so being closed currently is not a problem 😊 she is also spayed so her options are very wide open she just needs to meet the right pig at the right time I think 😊🤔 I will email Helen and also millhaven to enquire for once things get back to normal and sue has also said if she gets any more contenders in we can try again there 😊 xx

Feeling a little bummed because Ps ashes were supposed to be coming back today but it looks like there's been a delay due to the coronavirus situation so it will be at least a week but could be several weeks, all I know is the the cremation people go to the vets on Thursdays but aren't going every week at the moment and they will ring when she's back 😢

In terms of fluffy, it has been suggested that as she will likely need another slow bond I look into a pair of sows to be her neighbours and hope for a slow bond, I have some questions about this... Is 12 square feet (4foot by 3 foot which is half the cage) big enough for 2 sows long term if the slow bond doesn't work out? What are my chances of this working out with fluffy? I think she would need a very slow bond again and I'm not sure I'd be comfortable leaving her somewhere for weeks to be bonded she seemed very stressed when she came home from the last bonding attempt 😢 I think she would cope with neighbours that are not nugget and she's fairly submissive once past the fear stage, I'm thinking at the least she would have neighbours but i am a bit concerned about the space available 🙈 xx

I'm so sorry you didn't get Ps ashes back, what a horrible time you are having.
I can't answer your bonding question or cage size. I have had the experience of a boar who hated another boar on sight and still does if he accidently sees him. When I put the boys out on the lawn I have to make sure Red and Brillo's run is well away from Rusty and Peanut or Red goes mad. He's fine if he can see Caspy and Nugget. Guinea Pigs can be weird with their likes and dislikes. I really hope you can find someone Fluffy can stand the sight of.

I’m sorry you don’t have her ashes back yet 😞

The minimum welfare size for two piggies is 120cm x 60cm ( 4ft x 2ft). Your cage would be 120cm x 90cm (4ft x 3ft). So it is above minimum requirements.

Thankyou, I'm just so used to having a big cage now that to me it seems small 🤔 with any luck it would provide fluffy with stimulation though, I might start enquiring with rescues about adopting a sow pair if she can't be bonded 🤔 I think I'd sooner try another bonding attempt first but failing that have a backup 🤔 I hate seeing her alone xx

i think that’s a good idea.
Another bonding attempt would be great, you never know it may be the one! But failing that, a set of neighbours, which aren’t your other pair seeing as she has a problem with them, may be what she needs.

Thankyou, there's not much we can do during lockdown now other than spend a lot of time with her which we are doing, I'm just trying to have plans set out ready, I do worry that the more she gets used to being alone the more she'll not want a new friend. 😣

I'll be honest, I think its more difficult adding a single sow to a pair of sows as they will already have a hierarchy etc. But rather stroppy older sows certainly can surprise you. It's entirely about personality. Heaven knows I have fostered enough difficult single sows in the past to know that there is no rule book. In an ideal world she would go dating until she found a solo sow she found acceptable as a cage mate. But I know Covid-19 has rather blown that option out of the water.
4 X 3 for the pair would be absolutely fine if it didn't work out for Fluffy with the new neighbours

There definitely doesn't seem to be a rule book with fluffy 🤔 I read the bonding guide and wondered if a pair of very young sows would be an idea, ideally I couldn't put a single baby next to her as it wouldn't be fair on the baby being alone even with a neighbour. But if fluffy could have a week or two to get used to them she likely wouldn't be as fearful... That said I still want to try dating at least once more, then I'd probably still see if we could adopt a pair 🤔 but for now she's OK and has gained 20g back 😊
