Wheekallweek
Adult Guinea Pig
My poor little fella Eric is quite poorly.
He's 4, 5 in September. Current weight 1212g, 1345g at his heaviest. Had a mammary tumour removed last year with no issues. Has had IC for some time but always easily managed with meloxicam and Cystease.
On Friday evening after work I noticed he wasn't himself, still eating and biting the bars for his evening veggies, but in obvious pain when very regularly trying to go to the toilet (pee and poo). His wee had started to become smelly and poos smaller.
Saw the vet on Saturday who palpated his abdomen, which was a little bit sore vut nothing major. Couldn't feel any stones. Attempted to take some blood but couldn't get enough to send away. Prescribed Emeprid as he had lost some l weight (around 200g from his heaviest, although this has been over some time)
He was worse on Monday so went for an ultrasound, no sign of stones, some sludge in bladder. Metacam upped to 0.2ml 2xday (1.5mg dog), urine taken directly from bladder revealed oxalate crystals, some blood. Prescribed sulfatrim 0.2ml 2xday in case of infection. Small amount of blood taken and sent away.
Still no better throughout Monday and into Tuesday, slowly loosing appetite and constantly struggling to toilet and crying. Prescribed buprecare 0.2ml up to 3xday, although twice seems sufficient. Peeing undiluted fresh blood. Sedated due to meds but a little more comfort. Little appetite.
Back to the vets on Wednesday who say bladder feels inflamed. Bloods revealed high white bc count, nothing else of note. Not enough to test for kidney function. Had a concsious xray whihh revealed some arthritic changes in his ribs and sludge on neck of bladder but nothing else.
Have been advised to feed a very wet diet low in oxalate and syringe plenty of liquid to try to flush bladder through.
If no improvement we've been given three options.:
Catheterise and flush bladder
Surgically flush bladder
Diaxepam to relax urinary muscles.
He's pretty sleepy at the moment but is still squeaking when trying to toilet. Rarely leaves his bed, am changing bedding regularly and wiping him with grooming wipes as he is peeing on himself. Still eating but not as much as normal and very picky. Hates being syringe fed and won't take it from a bowl.
Any ideas? I'm at a loss and it crushes me to see him like this
