Hello! :)
Today, I was cleaning out "the guinea pig room", and I was using my dustpan to sweep up hair.
I left the dustpan on the floor to grab a newly washed hidey from the laundry basket. I turned my back for one second turned back around to see one of my piggies nibbling on the handle of the brush. :doh:I fill the room with so many safe wooden toys, but she chose the dustpan?
I immediately picked it up and realized that the handle was coated in a soft material and that it had accumulated quite a few other nibbles over time.
I am worried about my piggy. Right now, she is laying down on her favorite warm memory foam pad while eating hay and wheeking until I scratch her chin. :)
She seems okay right now, but I am very concerned about her health. I feel like a super bad piggy parent.
I have decided to purchase a wooden dustpan so that I feel safe with the occasional nibble.
Will she be okay?
Any advice is much appreciated. :)

Obviously it’s not good for them to be able to get to non edible items, but it happens! Mine have done the same thing to my dustpan and brush. One of my piggies in particular is very attracted to it and tries to get hold of it while I’m using it!
Keep an eye on them and ensure they still eat and poop as normal.

Thank you so much! That is definitely a relief to hear. :)
It is amazing to be able to ask questions on the forum! I do have any close friends or family who own piggies. :)

One of my other piggies will lay down in it and not move. Somehow the hard plastic is better to sleep on than the soft fleece? :)
Another one of my piggies is super picky about her hay being fresh, but she will always eat old, hair-covered hay from the dustpan while I am trying to sweep.
They are quite funny that way. :)

I once left my dustpan and brush in the cage overnight. I must have left it in there when I did their daily sweep just before I went to bed and I was probably half asleep. I noticed first thing in the morning but the rubbery lip on the edge had taken a fair nibbling

my pigs are exactly the same they will come and eat poops and dirty hay off the dustpan as though being told they can't eat it anymore suddenly makes it a delicacy

Crazy, right? :)
It is funny to know that other piggies share the same weird interest as mine!
That reminds me of cleaning out my closet! I haven't touched it in a year, but suddenly it becomes sentimental. :)

Of course!
Of the other hundreds of strands of hay...nothing will compare to the one that my sister has! :)

Just last night I found one piggy eating the flexible strip on the dustpan while another was eating the bristles of the brush. They really should know better than to do this! All fine today though.

My Minx taught herself how to claim the stairs in 2004 (always behind my back) and loved to try and lever the toilet brush out before I caught up with her (I had to find a Minx-safe place for it in a hurry after the second time, but then I had to find a lot of Minx-safe places as it was like living with a pint sized toddler! Thankfully she never managed to get the brush out fully.) :yikes:

I guess it is for them like watching the news on tv for us since their sense of smell is so much stronger while their eyesight is weaker than ours.

I'm glad your piggies are okay! Somehow the dustpan seems to absorb more of my piggy's time than the toys that I spend hours making! :)
I think mine know by now that they are being mischievous. They like to make trouble when no one is watching! :)
I caught one in the act yesterday and she ran to the litter box and started munching on hay. Quite a clever girl! :)

Piggies are so clever! They act cute and innocent when we are watching, but they are all secretly plotting to steal our cleaning supplies! :)

Oh, I’m sure they know. They are like pesky toddlers!
