COVID-19 Coronavirus

To anyone concerned, (as I am) I've found this really helpful to rationalise the situation.
It's a website that not only showed confirmed cases but also, active cases, those recovered etc and also breaks it down into countries.
Coronavirus Update (Live): 87,670 Cases and 2,994 Deaths from COVID-19 Wuhan China Virus Outbreak - Worldometer

The image below was screenshotted by myself on Thursday, as you can see the number of active cases is actually decreasing as the days go on, (by nearly 4,000) cases despite the media reporting on more and more cases.

Follow usual hygiene procedures and NHS guidelines, not only helps you, but everyone else in terms of all germs spreading. It's going to be okay :)

Have been looking on this site once daily to see the new statistics.

I've stopped looking online, the horrible headlines are getting worse!

The worrying part is, when the governemt and NHS think that washing hands is the best way to keep it under control 🤣

As far as I know there is only currently one case in Scotland, I think everybody needs to completely stop travelling (at least in the meantime) to prevent further spread in countries that have little to no cases

I have read (online, so take this with a pinch of salt) that it can affect dogs, so I’m not sure if it can be spread to other animals, so I’d just be vigilant

Seems too specific and why a bat? An animal thwt we probably have one of the least contact with. It's probably true but it seems like a cover up that the majority of public ( sheep mentality) will go along with

There is no evidence it will cross the species barrier into our pets. They found the virus on a dog the operative word being ‘on’ not in

practice good Hygiene and wash your hands lots. Make sure it is the first thing you do as you enter the house.

That’ll be what I read... I skimmed through the article so didn’t really read much

The WHO do not know the origin of the virus neither do they know patient zero.

At this point it matters not, it is here. Not going away and until a vaccine is available we are going to have to fight it globally. It is not one countries problem it is humanities issue.

Don’t they eat bat soup? 🙈
I’m only going off what I’ve heard. Plus I think bats/wild rodents/birds can harbour lots of diseases

I don’t really know much... I’m not very up to date with recent events

They have a valid point though. So many people think putting three fingers under a tap constituents washing their hands. (I have the hand hygiene certificates that prove otherwise 😂)

I've thought good hand hygiene & cough/sneeze into a tissue etc should be taught more. Not sure if taught is the word I want but so many people (young & old) cough, sneeze and splutter everywhere. Don't get me started on people who sniff up and then spit everywhere!

Peoples poor excuse for hand washing as always have me the fear lol
So many men walking out of service station toilets today, not even washing hands and then touching kfc touch screen menu. I've seen men walk out of a cubicle doing the same thing.

True what you said. I always wash my bands thoroughly, between fingers and all around

Something my mum has always done, maybe not to stockpiling levels but we always have tins/packets in & freezer food in too. Makes the weekly shop a bit easier too when have to walk home carrying stuff.

We always have toilet rolls, tooth paste & hand wash in too!

I always have a cupboard full of tins - soup, tuna, beans etc. If I get short my folks have a freezer full of food and tons of stuff in their garage 🤣🤣

It's bizarre that hand gel is selling out. Our local superdrug had a big delivery this morning and it was all gone within a couple of hours. A work colleague said her son's school is saying all students need to carry some which is ridiculous as most of it is just antibacterial. To have antiviral properties it needs to be at least 60% alcohol which I don't think a lot of them are

Ok, this is gonna come off as preachy but I'm going to say it anyway because it's important. I am the carer for an immuno-compromised pensioner (my mum) and this stuff is my daily so it bothers me a lot when I see misinformation everywhere.

I realise hand washing sounds ridiculous, but it GENUINELY is the best way to ensure the containment of mass spread of germs. In fact, it could be reasonably argued that a lack of it has inevitably brought this novel virus into the public eye because it spread through the poor hygiene of the human race by exploiting people's seeming inability to keep clean. Think of all the surfaces you touch in a day, then imagine how many times a day you see people eating and touching something out in public, how many times little kids stick their fingers in their mouths and then touch everything on the bus or the train. Now imagine the germs in every day life being spread like that without the threat of a pandemic...this is how people get colds and flu normally. It's just amplified when it's a novel virus on the run.

As for the connections to animals, there is literally no indication whatsoever that it passes from us back to animals, the weak positive found ON (key word here) the dog in Japan was more than likely a direct result of it being touched by it's infected owner or having picked up the virus when out as opposed to the dog itself being infected. The WHO report's from the last week or so have repeatedly said there is no evidence to suggest human to animal transfer beyond contact and most governments have stressed the need to wash your hands before and after handling your pets not just for the animals sake but because they don't want you catching additional infections on top of covid19 because your immune system will already be stressed.

In fact, that is literally why the use of anti-bacterial cleaning products is being recommended. It's not just about killing covid19 but making sure that if you DO catch it, you don't get other things while your body is trying to fight it off. Which, neatly, leads me to the OVER use of anti-bacterial hand washes (not household cleaners), which can, ironically, do you no favours because it runs the risk of stripping the oils from your skin enough to open up micro wounds on your hands, which can lead to other infections getting into the blood stream. Ever got really dry, flaky skin from washing your hands a lot in liquid soap? Yeah, that's why. In all honesty, sometimes the old ways are the best, and in this instance, bars of soap do the job beautifully, stress your skin less because they don't contain ethanol, and are infinitely cheaper. They also have the added bonus of making washing your hands take longer in order to get up the lather, which helps to ensure you're thoroughly cleaning them, not just dipping and dashing.

If you want to go all out, cut your nails short too. You'd be amazed at the germs that get trapped beneath long nails! Like holy crap it's gross! They're also harder to clean properly during a standard 20 second hand wash. And then, there's the all important drying. Improperly dried hands are germ magnets. You touch anything with damp hands and the germs on the object you touched are now your germs, congratulations! You can't dry hands on an already damp towel, you can't dry hands in 5 seconds or less. Washing and drying your hands properly takes a minute total.

So there you are, I realise most people ignore this stuff because it sounds utterly implausible, but take it from someone who has to use these measures every day anyway, it does work, it does make a difference and it is worth it.

As my husband is often not well and has been very ill at times, I always have a small larder of staples at home to cover us for a few more days if necessary until we can organise a supermarket or pet shop delivery; I can ask my neighbours to help with shopping in a pinch and just leave the stuff at the door. Keeping the piggies in veg and looked after will be the biggest problem if one of us or both fall ill.

I have made sure that I have spare basic toiletries and towels in another room in case I should not access the main bathroom on short notice as my hub is at a somewhat higher risk.

The problem is that this is a drawn out process and not a just a quick hunker down and let it pass...

F10 hand sanitiser gel says it is antiviral, good old F10!
Piggle was getting a bit concerned about sourcing fresh herbs during a pandemic so she asked me to order some parsley and coriander seeds and some organic compost and a few windowboxes to plant them in. She's a very practical piggy :)

I've just recommended it to an inner city friend.

But to be honest, fresh grass is the best fresh food anyway; young dandelions are also delicious.
Here is a wider range you can forage for if veg supplies in supermarkets are running low:
Safe wild weeds/plants you can feed your piggies
