COVID-19 Coronavirus

Imagine if society had these greedy values during the 2 World Wars. Yes there was looting and a blackmarket etc but because there wasnt the same "I want it now so I am having it Sod everyone else"attitude people mostly got by.I realise rationing played a big part in that but there wasnt the me,me,me society there is now. It shows how society has changed so much in relatively little time.

I see a lady a few months ago, bartering for an item in a charity shop 🤣. I'm not joking

My mum is a manager of a charity shop and the number of shoplifters they have is unreal. I think thieves incorrectly assume they won't have CCTV etc

Along with thinking a charity shop is less likely to prosecute

Quite possibly. They are a small local charity and not based in the city centre so the prices are fairly cheap in comparison to some charity shops but they report to the police all the time and yes people will still try and barter a £2 pair of trainers down. My mum's even had people shouting at her that this is supposed to be a charity shop there to help people. My mum politely corrected her that the charity shop is not there to help the general public but to raise money so that the charity can keep offering their service to the children it helps

Desperate people can do stupid things. It's not an excuse for that behaviour but a lot of the fallout from Covid19 isn't really unexpected. On the one hand you've got people who were already destitute or close to it. They barely had the money for necessities in the first place and now some of them are stuck, unable to even leave their homes to buy what they need. Deliveries are out of the question, even if they have the money for shopping they don't have the money to pay for delivery too. If they're required to sign on, then the DWP is going to come down on them like a tonne of bricks. Sure they say they'll make it easier but considering what they've sanctioned people for in the last decade, I wouldn't believe a word of it. Can't leave, can't eat.

Then on the other hand, you've got the other side of the coin. People who raged on about "scroungers stealing our money to pay for fripperies" and suddenly they realise they can't access those luxuries either. Maybe they realise just what they've been complaining about for a decade. Maybe they realise just how hard life is without even small luxuries, that living "off the basics" is sh1te (excuse my language) and a little bit of the extras goes a hell of a long way. More likely though that they're just angry they can't get what they want when they want it like they're used to, and of course that's everyone else's fault.

I also guarantee you it's the ones in the second paragraph causing more problems than the ones in the first.

Hey guys. The coronavirus has reached my city do I need to protect my piggies from it? If so how can I ?

Hi!

Here is our guide (it is stickied at the top of the home page and follows WHO recommendations for health advice).
Just use the normal good hygiene with hand washing before and after contact. Don't cuddle while acutely ill.

Your piggies can't catch it from you but ideally you do not have them in your room while you are acutely ill and self-isolating.
Worried about Covid-19 (coronavirus) transmission risk to your cavies and care during illness?

There are already several cases in my own city and I have 26 piggies to look after...

It wasn't much just a couple of boxes of wet food and a bag of litter but if we're struggling to find food rescues will feel the hit too 😕

In other news the range has plenty of pet food and hay (I didn't need any so didn't buy any) but worth noting if anyone's struggling 😊

I popped back to Morrisons this morning as I forgot a few things amid the chaos yesterday... well it was just as bad today! I helped an older man by pointing out the own brand handwash was on the bottom shelf and was £1.50 cheaper... also saw my neighbour (who is old but very active and fit) and she was struggling to find toilet rolls .. so I called at another shop and got her some on my way home.. my good deeds for the day!

Please don't forget those who can barely afford to feed themselves on a week by week basis and are dependent of food banks.
They have no possibility of stockpiling
A little extra for them of the foodstuff we can find when we shop will help.
I thought that earlier and next time I go out I will make sure I drop some bits in the food bank collection point..

Seeing as my girls are in my room, would placing a large blanket over their cages help keep things out or is it just not worth it?

I’ll be honest - I doubt it would make much difference. The best thing to do is simply to carry on as normal and maintain extra hand washing. There is no evidence that piggies are at increased risk unless you personally contract the illness. If you do, then it would be best to self isolate away from everyone and everything and ask another member of the family to care for them for you,

Morrisons was crazy this afternoon. I have never seen it that busy, even at Christmas! No baskets, no trollies left, queueing and fighting to get down aisles. No bread, beans, tins of veg/tomatoes, pasta, uht milk, tissues, toilet roll etc. I only noticed all this on my way round the shop as wanted porridge, tuna and apples!

Need to get some hand cream for work as I must have washed them 10 times in a 5 hour shift.

Mum has decided that she has no desire to go far unless she really needs to. She will probably just pop to the local shop a couple of times a week for milk/potatoes etc. Makes me a little happier. I sit at the other side of the room to her so hoping with our good hygiene & common sense she will be more protected.

Morrisons near me was also crazy..yesterday and this morning...

I did my usual weekly shop today - it was quite surreal, and a bit depressing really. Not one single potato in Sainsburys! A solitary bag of macaroni in the pasta section. Generally much less stock than there normally is. No loo rolls either, predictably, or in the Co-Op. The man on the checkout in Sainsburys told me that they put out a load at 9am, and by 10 they'd all been sold!
I really hope people are actually going to use all this food they're buying, and that it won't end up going to waste.

I always pay for delivery a year at a time, as not having to push a heavy trolley or lift bags in and out of the car really helps my bad back, but it doesn't seem like it'll be a good money saver this year! I had managed to book a delivery slot for my usual day this week, but I've cancelled it. I feel so sick at the thought of the paranoid and greedy booking all those slots and leaving the regular housebound customers or struggling single parents with no options. Hope someone who really needs it is able to use my slot instead. I think I'll try to shop little and often for the time being instead of the usual big weekly haul. Hopefully hubby will be working from home before much longer so I can drive rather than lugging it on the bus!

This is what makes me embarrassed to be British, the pure selfishness and greed. The inability to consider others needs at a time of crisis.

So I saw someone post this eBay screenshot today. Normally this baby formula is £12.99 in Boots. Companies aren't allowed to offer formula on deals etc as it encourages formula feeding over breastfeeding. However, not sure if there are rules about charging so much for it. People have stockpiled it when they don't need it themselves to sell on eBay for £30-45! Boots are currently sold out, as are many supermarkets. I am planning on breastfeeding but if there is any reason why I can't it does look like I'm going to have to pay 3 times the price to be able to feed my baby.

This is totally disgusting behaviour. Anything to make a quick quid :( My sister in law is struggling to buy nappies, formula and wipes for my nephew :( The country is full of selfish idiots

Where is she? I haven't seen any shortages around me. Loo roll, hand wash is different story. But every shop had baby products

I'm quite lucky in that respect as I decided to go reusable for nappies and wipes so hopefully we have enough nappies to see us through. My cousin also gave us a couple of bags of disposables as her 4 month old is too big for them now so we are all set

Don't suppose you'd like some more reusables? Sorting out after our move, I found a box of reusables I'd put to one side after my youngest outgrew them, then forgot about them  . You'd be most welcome to have them, they're not a lot of use to me now ... :xd:

I hope that other supermarkets will follow suit and introduce a shopping hour for the elderly and any people at risk to ensure that they can get the supplies they need as a priority in a stress-free environment without queuing.
