can AC cause breathing problems / URIs?

can you explain what i need to do with this boiling water bowl? do i literally just put the boiling water in a bowl and next to cage?

do you know if congestion should be treated with ABs at all?

Any bacterial infection should be treated with antibiotics. When you see the vet see what they say in the first place and take it from there.

Can you please specify which part of the respiratory system is congested? Just the nose, the throat/bronchia or the chest/lungs? The expression is too vague for us to give you an appropriate answer.

Place a bowl of hot water (with or without a drop of olbas oil) next to the cage and see whether that brings some relief. It won't cure a respiratory infection, though.

As your AC thread and antibiotic thread are both talking about the same thing, I have merged them and moved it to the health secfion

That's the sound my boy makes, it never causes him any harm. If it went on for longer than a day or two then I would be getting him in for a check up.
Keep a close eye and look out for any changes for the time being.

Although for the question of whether the AC caused this, I would say it is unlikely.

The reason for the boiling water is that the steam may relieve some of the congestion.
P.S - Your girl is absolutely gorgeous, a little chunky girl:wub:

so is congestion bacterial then? vet said breathing all sounded good and everything in check.

it’s definitely coming from her nose, you can only really hear it (video posted above) when she’s eating veggies so i held her up to me ear while she was eating and its the nose, lungs sound clear just heartbeat.

when your boy gets this, is it constant or just when he’s eating? yes noticed it sunday and that’s obviously why i still went yesterday even though i cancelled scan.. because she was given full clean bill of health i decided to not start the ABs yet, just hope it was the right decision.

thankyou so much! she really is i love my gorgeous babies so much! i’m glad to hear you call her chunky as shes always been the smaller one if the two, for a while she looked like a slightly large hamster haha! we believe she was the runt and actually has a different shaped face to her sister luna who looks like a ‘normal’ pig!

If it was a bacterial infection it would be on her chest and she would have been diagnosed with a URI and need the antibiotics

As I said piggies can’t breathe through their mouths so if they have nasal congestion or irritation breathing will sound very noisy

thankyou! so is there anything else i can try to help her shift it or is it a watch and wait?

It is a bit of both, it is prominent when he is eating but it is not only when he is eating.
How is she this morning?

If it has been going on since Sunday, you would be looking for it to clear up on its own soon.

No, congestion is NOT bacterial unless it is part of a URI. It can simply be caused by grass pollen, hay dust, house dust or something stuck in the nose.

In older piggies narrowed and more flaccid airways can also make the small airways more audible in quickly changing weather conditions as long as the rest of the airways in the throat and chest are clear.

brilliant thankyou so much for clearing this up..

that makes sense!

I’ve just read your posts. I feel if you think it’s coming from something blocked in her nose, give it a day or two to clear. If there is no improvement put her on the course of antibiotics just to be on the safe side incase it is the start of a URI

yep, this is the plan, thank you!
