Buttons' spay

Glad the op went well.
Your vet sounds excellent.
It takes time for the anaesthetic to work out the system so she’ll possibly be a bit woozy for a while.
She sounds as if she’s doing well with the critical care.
I often add a bit of mashed banana into the mush - mine love it.

Hope everyone has a good night.

She has been very brave (and you too) and me and my piggies send lots of healing vibes and wheeks . Hope she has a good night xx

We have made it through the first night 🤩 I got up twice to feed her and got 10ml into her every time. I think she has also started to eat the tiniest little bit of hay for herself because I could hear her rummage around her hay bowl and feeder in the night. One tiny spot of her incision is on and off bleeding but only very lightly. It already did that at the vets yesterday but she didn’t want to put her through any more poking and prodding and was confident that the wound wouldn’t open seeing that she‘s double stitched it so it definitely stays closed. I will ask her about it at our post op check up this afternoon, our appointment is at 5:15pm.

Will also give the vet office a call as soon as they open because I have forgotten the pain killer dose and what time I am allowed to give it to her. For now she doesn’t seem to be in any pain though and is napping peacefully in her hidey.

She‘s currently sitting in her little hay pile munching with Cornelius on the other side of the bars. This is the first time she‘s eaten for longer than 10 seconds (we’re at roughly 3 minutes of munching now!):yahoo:She does feel a little bit bloated which is probably normal after such a major surgery but I‘ll ask my vet later to check it and maybe give us some Emeprid for the weekend, just in case. Other than tha, she‘s still sleepy and woozy but much more alert than yesterday already. Fingers crossed recovery continues like this!

She says you wouldn’t believe the day she‘s had! I was also speaking too soon, managed to get 15ml of recovery food and a whole lot of coriander into her! 🤩 She‘s now back in the cage resting on her heat pad. Fingers crossed she continues to improve like that. It was definitely the right decision to bring her home.

Absolutely, back with her friends, they always do better. You are such a clever and brave girl Buttons, keep on chomping!

Very much so! And Cornelius is such a sweetheart, he goes to check on her through the bars every time he gets up. Once she feels up to it I‘ll probably let him pay her a little visit. These 2 lovebirds can‘t be separated for long.

Just got back from our post op check up. The vet is super happy with how she‘s doing, the incision looks good and she also isn’t bloated anymore. She still gave us some Emeprid so we have some on hand in case we need it. She had another buprenorphine injection to make sure she‘s as comfortable as possible during her second night and we got a full bottle of metacam which I can give to her as soon as she shows signs of the buprenorphine wearing off tomorrow. Like yesterday, she’s very sleepy - she showed some interest in her dinner veggies but she was ultimately too tired to actually eat. It took her a few hours yesterday to get over the tiredness of the injection so I‘m putting the veggies in the fridge until she‘s slept it off. She has started eating some hay for herself but I will still top her up with CC, especially now that she‘s too tired to eat. But first I will let her nap for an hour. So proud of my brave little girl!

And for general information: I paid a total of €235 which included the surgery, all post op care, a 60ml bottle of colostrum, a 30ml bottle of metacam and bene bac probiotics which in my opinion is a super fair price for everything.

So pleased to hear that Buttons is doing well. Hope that she continues to improve.xx

Night #2 is behind us! Buttons is much clearer and more alert today but still doesn’t want to move much. Unsurprising really, who would want to move after such a huge surgery. She is eating a little for herself but I am still syringe feeding her every 2-3 hours where she gets however much she‘ll take. Usually that’s between 6ml and 10ml. Her weight is currently at 975g, pre surgery it was at 1001g so considering how big the cyst was she hasn’t lost much at all up until now. She is also interested in other food and had a bit of lettuce, coriander and cucumber for dinner last night. She poked her nose out for a couple of blueberries last night and again when it was pellet time before I went to bed. So she‘s clearly feeling a bit better and more like herself.

She just had her morning meds & syringe feed and i tidied up her cage and replaced the puppy pads. She had a little nibble of hay before and after syringe feeding this morning. Only a couple of minutes each but I‘m not complaining, after all we‘re only on day 2. She felt a bit chilly when I got her out this morning so I heated her heat pad up for her which she is now napping on while listening to Pewter shouting at Cornelius on the other side of the bars.

Overall I‘m really happy with her progress. I just have to remind myself that she‘s had major surgery and will take time to heal - I‘m just too impatient! xx

An evening update from us! Buttons is still very sleepy and spends most of the time passed out. Her appetite for hay is also still very minimal so I‘m syringe feeding her every 3 hours and once in the night. I think it might be the buprenorphine that‘s causing her to be so sleepy as she’s had two injections of that with the last one being yesterday late afternoon. She is interested in her veggies though and had some coriander, cucumber & lettuce again today. She even came out when I was cutting up dinner to receive her tea so I‘m counting this as a success. Poop output today is a bit more scarce than yesterday but that’s not really a surprise considering she didn’t eat all day Thursday.

Overall she seems more clear and alert today and doesn‘t have that „out of it“ look that she had yesterday. I‘m hoping the sleepiness improves as the injection leaves her body and that she‘ll pick up her hay munching soon.

I tried to put Cornelius with her today for a bit to give her a little motivation but that was wholly unsuccessful as she did not want him anywhere near. When he poked his head into her hidey she made it very clear that he was not welcome. So it was probably too early for her to have company. We‘ll try again when she feels more like herself. I really hope she improves soon, I hate it when they‘re not well :(

It sounds as if all is going well.
It does take a few days for the anaesthesia to work out the system, it’s just that we want our beloved piggies to be better immediately.
Buttons is in the best hands with you.

That is very true, if I could make her well again right this second, I would do it without hesitation. But considering the ordeal she‘s been through just 2 days ago she’s holding up well! And I think her hay intake is picking up a little, she‘s been out to munch of a couple of minutes twice in the last 1,5 hours. That‘s more than she‘s been out to eat hay all day so I think we‘re moving in the right direction!

Just had Buttons out for a feed and noticed that her wound has opened a bit :( Called the emergency vet, we have to be there at 9am tomorrow to get it closed up. I will keep her enclosure as clean as possible until then so there‘s no nasties getting into the wound. I don‘t think she gnawed it open, it looks like it was just an unfortunate accident. Oh man, what a rollercoaster ride this is!

Hope there’s no infection gets in.
These piggies do like to worry us.
I really hope so too! She‘s on clean puppy pads and fresh fleece in her hidey, no bedding that can get stuck in the wound and only 2 small piles of hay that she‘s largely laying next to. So it should stay fairly clean until tomorrow morning. It looked very clean when I realised it had opened half an hour ago so hopefully we‘ll be fine in terms of infection!

Thanks everyone! Buttons seems unbothered about the open wound and is generally much better than she was earlier today. She‘s been munching quite a lot of hay since 8pm and also ate almost all of her dinner veggies. So at least that has improved. Celebrating the small victories!

I just had her out for her last syringe feed of the evening where I also checked her wound again. It‘s definitely opened but it‘s as closed as it can be without stitches - so thankfully not a gaping hole. Also no blood or pus and looking completely clean. Changed her puppy pads and the fleece in her hidey again so it‘s all as clean as possible and of course she has decided that now is the time to go lie in her little hay pile 🤦🏼‍♀️ Everything to keep mummy on her toes!

Even though she‘s picked up her hay intake I‘ll still get up once during the night to top her up and make sure everything is clean. If I was drinking alcohol, now would be the time for a big glass of wine 😂
