Broken femur, overwhelmed with how to help.

Hay everyone, thought I'd update.

Chutney is still doing well. Much her cheeky self and munching hay non stop 🤣

Trying to get some sort of plan of action with the vets. Our vets isn't particularly keen with letting her be and thinks we should amputate or pts, but then she says herself she doesn't really know an awful lot about small animals and will speak to the specialist vets again ASAP.

She's still on metacam and happy to have lots of head rubs (we don't handle her much, just the minimum, as per vets advice to let her be) and has been spotted popcorning despite me telling her she's shouldn't be 🤣

I worry all the time I'm not making the right decisions but then we don't have any other choice at the moment.

Xx

Hi

:agr: with @piggieminder .

By now the tiny bones will have pretty much knitted and the pain will majorly diminished; enough that Chutney is able to live a happy, normal life and the broken leg doesn't seem to impede her in any way.

What can eventually become a concern in the future is if arthritis develops in the break and if this really impacts on her mobility and quality of life - then would be the time to consider an amputation but by now the ideal moment for that consideration has passed and any operation would essentially mean more pain and upset.

Thanks for the positive update. I’m so pleased she is doing so well. If she can do all the normal piggy day to day activities then her quality of life is good and she definitely doesn’t need to be considered for pts.

I agree! Animals have an amazing power to heal as they (unlike humans) don’t feel sorry for themselves and just get on with life. She is unlikely to be in a lot of pain as she wouldn’t be eating, popcorning etc. You are doing a great job looking after her. Don’t let your vet encourage you to put her to sleep, there’s no need, she has a good quality of life and you know her best and have her best interests at heart.
