Broken femur, overwhelmed with how to help.

My piggies go to the exotic vet in Swindon (presuming it’s the same one). They are very thorough and will give you all the options. Thinking of you and Chutney x

@furryfriends (TEAS) is right, Simon and Kim at the Cat and Rabbit Clinic are amazing with piggies. I'd give them a call, discuss what's going on and see what they can do! Also a lot cheaper than a specialist for sure.
Thanks both, will see what they say. I've emailed the cat and rabbit clinic but it's a 7 hour round trip for us, will see what the options are for our vets, vets in Swindon and the Northampton one now too, costs etc and report back. I think she'd be quite happy with 3 legs as she's doing so well considering she must be in pain. I just don't know what my husband is going to do if I spend thousands helping her 🙃

Good luck. I hope you can sort something out for her. I’ve taken a piggy from Swindon to Northampton to cat and rabbit. They were a lot cheaper than Drove vets and Great Western Referrals. Sending healing vibes her way. ❤️

Oh really? Okay that's good to know, I'd rather have drive far and save her than not be able to afford to save her. I've family in the midlands too so would be closer if I stayed there. Drove vets are the ones that said they didn't want to do it.

I took my now Rainbow Piggy Shy Little Meg to see Kim and Simon during Lockdown when my vets couldn't find out what was wrong with her. Her only symptom was that she was losing weight weekly and Metoclopramide (gut stimulate) wasn't helping. I knew there was something amiss so I took her to Northampton (5 hour round trip). Kim and Simon found that she had a lacerated cheek from a tooth spur which they sorted, she had had some neurological episode on the right side of her face and she had a slight heart murmur. Basically they saved her life. Meg lived happily for another couple of years before I had to have her pts. It's worth the trip. Kim and Simon are amazing.

So glad they helped her when she needed it. I love hearing these stories.

I run a guinea pig charity for guinea pigs with ongoing health issues. Simon and Kim are the reason the charity exists. We couldn’t do what we do, without them!

Here’s Simon with Shelly. One of the many piggies he’s saved the life of! IMG_1835.webp

They sound like incredible people, as are you. I'd go into some serious debt saving animals, I prefer them to people!

I'm not sure what our options are here with our household having very different opinions on what's feasible 😪

If you can get to Northampton, then it is alwas worth it, whatever turns out to be the best way forward. But you are getting good service for your money.

Several of my piggies would have had much shorter lives without the Cat&Rabbit.

Best give them a call first thing in the morning.

Yes I'm going to call them as soon as I get chance in the morning, I did ping over an email yesterday also.

Good luck!🤞❤️
It was Kim who diagnosed my Rainbow Bridge piggy Larry with diabetes after he kept getting recurrent problems with one of his eyes and had to have it removed.
I would never have even thought of it! They really are super, she'll be in the best hands 👍

Amazing! They certainly come highly recommended.

Simon Maddock and his wife Kim are vets who have specialised in treating only cats, rabbits, guinea pigs and small furries over 20 years ago. They are best known for their dental work on guinea pigs but they were also one of the best operating vets for guinea pigs at a time when piggy savvy vets were like gold dust... as rare and as treasured.
Simon has a true gift for fiddly operations and Kim is one of the best and most considerate dignosticians I have ever had the privilege to meet. They also have a great team of nurses for the critical post-op recovery care; and that partnered with an unparalleled experience in dealing with guinea pigs and piggy problems, they have about as high a success rate as can be reasonably achieved.

I hope you have been able to get an appointment at the Cat and Rabbit clinic. I took 2 of my piggies there when my usual vet couldn't help, and I was so glad I was able to.

If the worse come to the worst, guinea pigs can manage on 3 legs - one of my first 2 had to have a rear leg amputated, and he carried on happy as normal for another year. It may be a bit different if it's a front leg, or because your piggy is still growing, but I hope not badly so. And I hope of course it doesn't come to that for your piggy, @twolittlegirlypigs . Sending her lots of healing vibes 💓

I've rang this morning and they need the info notes and xrays from my vets so just rang my vets and they are sending those over asap. Hopefully I'll hear back from them today with some rough prices and times.

It's her back left leg. I really hope we can help her x

All the best!

PS: The weight bearing front legs are more difficult; a back leg out of order or missing is easier for a guinea pig to cope with, by the way although from seeing quite a few videos of tripod piggies living in rescue, they are totally able to keep up with thier mates.

So Swindon great western exotics said the same as the other vets. £1500-£2000 and even then they wouldn't recommend it and said amputation will just cause her issues later in life.

I feel like nobody wants to help her 😪 still waiting for the cat and rabbit to get back to me I've rang again this afternoon and the receptionist said he's going to look at the notes/xray after his surgeries.

I feel like we need to prepare ourselves for letting her go 😭

I’m very sorry this terrible accident has happened 😞 I’m afraid I have no advise to offer other than waiting and seeing what Simon says once he’s looked at her X-rays but I am wishing you and your girl all the best as you have some tough decisions to make. She’s beautiful x
Thank you, fingers crossed. She's flumped on her leg eating hay bless her x
