:) I should mention, although they've already been brought up the River of London Series, it's sort of like Harry Potter, but with warrant cards, it's also the only series I've ever seen another person reading on the train and been able to have a conversation over.

You and I have quite different likes! As a kid, I was not fortunate enough to have had a book with a button that made a dog bark 😕. (I am more than making up for that now when I'm at work). But I did have a lot of Roald Dahl books. I read The Twits and Fantastic Mr Fox time after time. I loved the way he told stories and Quentin Blake's illustrations. Not sure if they've shaped my character 🤔. I really should try Terry Pratchett. He was British after all. Maybe I'll add it to my bucket list.
I think I’ve read one of his books.
I finish a novel about every 3 days. The day before lockdown I went to a charity shop and bought a carrier bag full of 50p books as I knew the library books I had wouldn't last long! I am ploughing my way through the bag but I haven't read anything I would recommend. I'm only sticking with these as they are better than nothing. How do people get this rubbish in print, normally I'd have discarded a book I didn't like after a couple of chapters. I'm getting an education in bad novels. :))
I stopped torturing myself - if I can’t get into it after a few pages I don’t bother! There’s an audiobook I borrowed but the voice just put me off. And then another one was all in the first person 😬
Ooo I read quite a few of hers years ago, they were good
She’s releasing a new one in June. I’ve preordered it. I’d best finish the current one 🤦🏾‍♀️

I usually give up after the first chapter but at the moment I don't have the means to get any more cheap books so I need to persevere! Will be so pleased when the libraries open again. We have no income until lockdown is over and then it will take a while to get things sorted so I can't spend any money on books as we don't know how long our savings have to last - so frustrating!

I've given about a dozen books to a neighbour to read. I usually buy mine from The Works and charity shop them afterwards. You should live nearer!

Sorry you’re in a difficult position. If you’re a member of a library you may be able to borrow ebooks or audiobooks.
I’ve got some (two?) crime novels I could send you if you want.

Oh, I don’t know if other Tesco’s have it but our local one has some books on a small shelf. You can take them for a small contribution...I can have a look see for you.

That's very kind of you. Can you let me know the titles if I haven't read them I can send you the postage or make a donation to TEAS. I am going to donate when we have some money coming in again for Wiebke and Posyrose's walking challenge so could add some extra. Sadly we don't have a TESCO within walking distance and the car needs repairs so is off the road, probably for the duration! How would an ebook or audiobook work we only have a laptop presumably I would download them to this. I read mostly in bed as I am an insomniac, at least the books I've got at the moment are sending me to sleep! I did say to my OH tonight I wish I had bought a kindle when I had the chance but I didn't think I would like reading from a screen.

:agr: Though I don’t know if free books are being offered.

I’ll let you know the titles later. Send me a message to remind me in case I forget.

I have an app that allows me to check out audio books from the Library. It's called Libby. Between that and Overdrive you get SO much!

I used to go to the library all the time. There's something about a well read book. Just knowing lots of people have read it...

But sometimes they would smell. And that could put me off.

Very excited to get these in the post today!

I love scandinavian noir especially Hakan Nesser and I think I've only read one of these before, ages ago... ex library stock, £8 for all 4 books from ebay! :)

I know that in some places old phone kiosks have been turned into book exchanges.
You take books you want to read and add books you’re finished with.

It’s probably worth scouting around to see if there’s one locally.

All the old phone kiosks here have been removed they get vandalised. If anyone left books in them they'd make a lovely bonfire.

You can get the kindle as a phone app?
I don't have a phone! Sorry I'm sounding very negative, thanks for all the suggestions. We don't have the money for new technology or new books unfortunately. Due to lockdown we are eeking out our savings and wondering if they are going to last long enough.

I have some books I've finished with, I am going to put them out the front of the house for people to take when it stops raining, at least I can help others.

I thought I had 2-3 other books but I may have given them away. I’ve got books by Karin Slaughter - see below.

  • Beyond reach
  • A faint cold fear
  • Indelible
  • Triptych
  • Faithless
  • Skin privilege
If you don’t mind, let me know one or two authors you like or two particular titles you like and I’ll get them for you. Just because ☺️

I’ll check and see if our Tesco still has the books there. I’ll try and send you some pics if they’re there then you can let me know if you want any.

I've been re-reading some Terry Pratchett recently (the Death series, Jingo, Small Gods - all Discworld) and honestly, I'd recommend them to everyone. They're funny, smart and quite on the nose about certain social issues. Yeah yeah I know, fantasy novels and all that, but I'm serious. Well worth it.

Terry Prachett is one of the few author's I can't get past the first couple of pages of. One of my daughter's loves his books and rereads them frequently, it takes all sorts!

I'm curious. But I don't usually like fantasy 🤔. Plus I could count on one hand how many books I've given up on. Don't want to break that mould, but neither do I want to be stuck reading a book I don't like during lockdown!

It's not fantasy like Tolkien or the Chronicles of Narnia. It's much more...down to earth than that? It's clearly fantasy don't get me wrong but a good place to start would probably be with one of the City Watch books - Discworld - Wikipedia I'd say they're the least "fantasy" orientated.

I love these books and some of his later ones too, Going Postal is a favourite.

During lockdown, we are getting all the new books we’ve got onto our database and into the library (OH’s OCD - 5000 books and counting.......) I’ll admit some are mine but the majority are his! I have a trio of books by Katherine Arden - The Bear and the Nightingale; The Girl in the Tower and The Winter of the Witch. Sort of fantasy/fairy tale which I thoroughly enjoyed.

We've got lots of the Terry Pratchett books, many of them signed, as he was friends with my mother in law via an online literary forum many, many years ago when forums were a new thing! Might look them out for a bit of light hearted re-reading, I think they are in the bottom of the wardrobe under my emergency hay supplies :)

I genuinely love the books in general but the Death series is probably my favourite. They're definitely not morbid and the humour is definitely my thing. There's a reason Death is one of the best liked Discworld characters.

Sounds like I should try Terry again, maybe I was in th wrong mood for him when I tried him before.

I watched the movies first 🙈 I did think it was odd 🤔
The first movie was great. The second one was okay. The third, I almost flipping punch the tv when I was watching it! 🤣 I always read the book first before watching the movies (well apart from The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter because it's a lot😁), and I was so disappointed they didn't stick to what happened in the book. 🤦‍♀️👎
