My Zoey is at the vet right now. Diagnosed with a bladder stone. She is 5. Should I do surgery? She also has reproductive symptoms as well. Can they spay her at the same time? Sorry. I am a mess. My first stone pig. Gugh.

All the best!

I have had several 5 years olds successfully spayed, so it can be done. I've also had several sows needing bladder stone ops; mostly a decade ago when I was experimenting with diet and for a while getting it exactly wrong. Unfortunately, stones usually don't go away on their own.

Here are our post-op care and emergency/crisis care guides with all the practical information and helpful tips in case you need them (although I sincerely hope not!):

Thank you so much. It cannot be done for 2 weeks. They are supposed to send an estimate, but I think I am just going to schedule it in the meantime . I am so scared, but it's her best chance I think.

It's never an easy decision or one that is made lightly. All the best for the interim!

I’m so sorry Zoey has a stone and reproductive issues.

There is no right or wrong answer. You just have to be 100% comfortable with your decision.

I don’t want to scare you but I just wanted to give you a different perspective. I recently lost my Percy after stone surgery. I thought he’d have the op and be absolutely fine. But he didn’t recover well from the anaesthetic. With hindsight I wouldn’t have put Percy through it but I HAD to try as he was only 2! The op went well though.

It’s brilliant that you have a great vet. Of course most operations go well. Good luck with your decision. I hope Zoey is soon on the mend.

If she weren't in pain, I probably wouldn't do it, but every time she pees is painful. I feel like it's her only chance. I'm sorry for your loss 😞.

I am so sorry to hear you have to make such a difficult decision. My girl poppy was diagnosed with a stone in October. She was in a lot of pain. Passing lots of blood and loosing weight. I was told surgery was the only option for her as the stone was so big and they were worried about it getting stuck in her urethra. She had a CT scan which showed a small ovarian cyst. The initial vet we saw told us a spay would be good at the same time. After going to another exotic vets for a second opinion we decided not to spay at the same time. He told us she would either need one big wound to remove the uterus and ovaries too. Or end up with 3 wounds to remove just the ovaries via the flank approach and then the stone surgery on her tummy. We chose not to spay her as the cyst was so small and was an incidental finding. She recovered well from surgery but still has bladder issues. If your vet isn’t very experienced with guinea pigs you are well within your right to find somewhere else to do the surgery. I wish you lots of luck. It’s not an easy decision. But I suppose for us because poppy was so ill and the stone was so large (and spiky😭) we weren’t left with any other choice than to do surgery. Did they say what reproductive issue she had? Or whether there was any way she could pass the stone on her own if it’s small enough?❤️

She cannot pass the stone. It's large. I am just guessing on hormonal issues because her nipples are large crusty and look swollen. She is also very rumbly with her cagemate. Those are all new symptoms. She did not have diagnostics for hormonal issues. I may not do the spay depending on the cost of the surgery. My vet is super expensive 😫. I trust her though. She is excellent. She says she just did this surgery on an 8 year old last week and did very well. I have to at least do the stone surgery. She is in pain.

On an 8 year old piggie that is amazing! You have to go with what you think is the best thing to do at the time. Every vet is differant and it helps so much when a vet is confident in what they’re going to do doesn’t it. Whatever you choose to do you will have chosen with your heart and because you love your piggies so very much xx

Thank you. It's so hard.

I’m sorry to hear that :( how is zoey now?

My guinea pig had a surgery for bladder stone yesterday and he passed away. I’m really breaking down and can’t function. He was my little baby.

I’m so sorry to hear that. My boy Percy passed last August after his stone operation. Just know that you were doing all you could to try to make him better. Take care ❤️

I am sorry for your loss 😞. You did everything you could. I don't think with stones you have much of a choice. Zoey is scheduled for surgery a week from today. That was the soonest they had.

Holding you in my heart ♥️

Wishing you all the best for the surgery next week. I really feel for you during this anxious time. Thinking of you both. Xx

Zoey has been passing chunks of what I think are pieces of a stone. I tried to get a good picture. Please look and tell me if you think they are.
They are hard like rocks. I am keeping them to show the vet Wednesday. I hope she is somehow passing it. She seems so much more comfortable now.
