Big Jowls

One last question, sorry! Can I treat Reggie straight away? He might not have mites now, I'm just worried it will be detrimental if he isnt infected to be treated for it.
Yep I would

Actually, the vets have already ordered it specifically for me. I wouldnt want it to arrive and then I turn around and say oh sorry I bought my own.
Since the pig that currently has mites has already been treated, will my Reggie be okay until Monday?

Also, we have made an agreement to post-pone any meet ups until both pigs have recieved full treatment. Its going to be so hard not to fall utterly in love with such a chunky, sweet boy!

Do you know what he was treated with? Sometimes they just use that cheap stuff which isn’t any good. If Reggi and Hank have been together then I would treat both. If the vet has ordered then wait till Monday.

Sorry I didn’t respond quicker, I’m poorly and Ginger had a hay poke yesterday so rushing backward and forward to vets, eye drops every 6 hours so I’m exhausted 😴

Wash your fleece first, then freeze for 36 hours. Do it when you clean out, the treatments break the cycle at intervals like Piggies&Buns said

Okay great, thank you! I do not know which one she used exactly, but apparently there is a less strong version that is meant to be used monthly. I will do two weeks with hank, then probably get him back in to the vets to see if we continue for a 3rd.

One last question, I promise! When the fleece 'defrosts', is it safe to use straight away or am I better to pop it in the wash again?
No worries about the reply, I hope both you and Ginger are feeling soon better x

Pet shops type products are too weak to fully cure an infestation of mites. They may only temporarily suppress (and then the mites can take hold again so you have to go back for more treatment).

We never recommend routinely treating monthly. There is no need.

So is the stuff the vet is ordering for me not going to work? She kept mentioning how I could get it from a pet shop.

Personally, I’d not want to use it. It’s not that it won’t work, it’s that it might not be fully effective. We don’t recommend the use of pet shop parasite products due to their weak formula.
Xeno the product that you would want to use, and the one my vet had always given.

Ill have to wait until Monday to see what she has ordered. If it is the wrong one I will just have to buy the xeno online.

Is this what is not strong enough -

Yes, it’s very weak and suppresses the mites, I don’t think it works well. You run the risk of them coming back.
Once you have taken the fleece out of the freezer let it dry as normal then you can use. The defrost cracks any eggs that have been laid on the fleece

I'm glad there's no issues and he's just a chunky hunk ❤️
He is a very sweet boy, I’m so sad their bond has failed. It’s kind of a “light in the darkness” that he’s stuck with me for 3 weeks while I carry out his treatment, so I’ll be getting all the chunky cuddles while I can.

Treatment (with xeno) is two weeks between each treatment with three treatments so it takes six weeks to complete treatment

Oh, I didn’t know this. Can I look into bonding my Reggie while he’s still going through treatment? 6 weeks is a long time to wait before looking into progressing with my piggy journey.

I just want a happy pairing! But none of them seem to get along.

It depends whether the rescue will allow it. You should ask them.
He isn’t confirmed to have mites though is he?

No, Reggie is not. But it was recommended to me that I treat him aswell as they were in full contact for probably 5-7 hours.

The earliest I was thinking anyway would be 4 weeks, so that would have left a week after the last treatment. I guess it’s not that much different.

I also have a question about bathing. Should I be bathing them a day or two after their treatment?
I understand that the treatment kills the mites but how do they get off the body?

If so, would it be worth me ordering gorgeous guineas shampoo, as I know it’s made specifically for piggies.

I don’t bath them after treatment. You don’t need to.

But in the future if you want to bath them then gorgeous guineas just for boars shampoo smells amazing. 🤩

No you don’t bathe.
You just change the bedding and disinfect the cage a few days after each treatment.

Ive been given two pipettes of xeno 450. I assume this is because I failed to tell her they had already been in contact, and she only believes he needs two weeks of treatment, 10 days apart. Should I follow her guidelines or 3 treatments, 2 weeks apart.

I have already ordered more xeno from pets at home to be picked up another day.

If your vet didn’t have the full information then it’s difficult to say to follow what she has said, equally we can’t say go against the vet but we also know that it is three treatments with two weeks between each one! (It’s definitely two treatments needed but the third treatment is more of a catch all to make sure nothing remains which can kick things off again.)

I would perhaps call the vet and explain the situation. Tell them you have ordered more xeno and that you intend on following the advice of three with two weeks between. See what they say.

Okay, thank you!

Hi, just looking for some advice.

Poor hank is riddled with mites, they’re all over him. He’s had his first proper treatment tonight. Could I give him a bath, say Friday evening? I’ll change all his bedding so he goes into a fresh cage aswell.

What has happened with his neck?

I did the same treatment with my Reggie yesterday and he had no issue. The treatment was applied maybe 2 hours ago, I put him back in his cage and came back to his neck looking like it’s wet. I know for a fact he can’t reach that area with his mouth, so what is happening?

There’s quite a lot of medicine in one pipette as i’ve found, but my Reggie didn’t have any issue with his hair.
Could the fact Hank has smooth hair have something to do with it.

It’s not a reaction because he got a treatment last week is it?
