Next update. Not great news but not the worst. Still very much a waiting game. Her front teeth haven’t grown and are tiny, this is one problem she has right now. Her back show some improvement after nearly 3 weeks but it’s still not looking like she can definitely be “fixed”. Simon has said to try 2-3 times more and then make a long term decision. The cost and travel time means that if she has to rely on 3-4 weekly dentals then it’s unfortunately not something we are able to carry on with. He mentioned that an option may be to send her to a sanctuary who will be able to carry on with the upkeep of her teeth. Has anyone got any experience with this. I’ll be heartbroken to lose her but I would do anything to avoid having her PTS. She is an amazing little piggy.
Guinea pigs generally travel well, so she won’t mind the 3 hour trips provided she has hay and water access/cucumber. There are people on this forum who travel longer than that every month, or even every two weeks. I have travelled 3 hours to see Simon multiple times too. Doing those trips would definitely work for her permanently. However, it’s whether you can do it permanently. It’s a big commitment, and you aren’t doing her an injustice by surrendering her because of this. Guinea pigs can live a long, happy life whilst having dental issues so her being PTS because of this is slim to none, but it is entirely dependent on her receiving dental care. Debbie from TEAS is wonderful, and if she has room for Biscuit then Biscuit would definitely be living the good life, so you wouldn't have to worryThank you. I realised after posting this that she’s been offering fantastic support on here and was probably the sanctuary Simon was thinking off. I’ve just looked at her Facebook page and it looks like exactly the type of place I’d want for Biscuit ❤ I’m teared up as I type this even thinking of having to let her go but unfortunately 3 hour round trips costing £60 a time (and then fuel) aren’t a permanent option for such a young pig. I’m feeling brighter at the thought of there being another option, I genuinely thought PTS was my only option if it didn’t work out. Fingers crossed she can stay with me but it’s hopefully not going to affect her at all if she can’t and she’ll be just as happy somewhere else x
It’s completely understandable, you have to do the best you can for your piggy but also the best thing for you. You both have to take care of each other, you by allowing her to get the treatment she deserves, and her by then ensuring you are able to live without the stress and financial worry. I struggle a lot financially, especially when it comes to the pigs and it is extremely difficult and it can wear me out a lot mentally and emotionally. I really hope Simon manages to permanently sort her out in the next few sessions and she gets to stay with you. But if not, you are absolutely doing the right thing. If you haven’t already contacted TEAS definitely do so, even though it may not be completely necessary as of yet. I just re-read your post and 3/4 weekly dentals is very extreme and quite frankly undoable for you and also likely her if most of her week is then taken up by vet visits and travelling. She is very lucky she fell into the hands of someone who cares enough to make the hard but necessary decisions.Thank you. It’s the fuel cost, having to miss work (I’m zero hours so if I’m offered something that clashes I have to miss out and turn work down) and the £60 fee then any meds such as pain relief to add on too. I just can’t keep that up unfortunately and as she’s so young it could go on for years. I have to be realistic unfortunately.
Aw, don’t feel bad, it’s is a huge commitment. We travel from Cornwall and I exactly how you feel. If you have the kind offer of a place at TEAS furry friends then I would take it. You have done marvellous with her and you are a very caring person.Thank you. It sounds like she's making good progress, but can promise you a place, here at TEAS, if needed! xx

well done you! What a great job you’ve done with a little help from SimonHi everyone. I think I’m long overdue giving you an update. So we had another appointment today (5 weeks from the last) and things are finally starting to look good. Simon said her back teeth are doing much better and the condition she is in herself proves that she’s doing good. He’s told me we can leave her now and see how she goes before we book the next appointment. Maybe 6 weeks but possibly Up to 8 if she is doing okay. He’s said after a few days she can stop the medication for pain relief as she doesn’t need it now. I’ve bought some more so we can give it her if she starts to struggle towards her appointment, nice to know we have it if needed. Her front teeth still haven’t grown (all 3 that she has) and he thinks they won’t now, or if they do they will just break off. It’s something we can obviously monitor ourselves as we can see them. Really pleased that we seem to be coming out the other end.![]()
Thank youwell done you! What a great job you’ve done with a little help from SimonSo lovely to hear she’s doing so well! It is a great relief knowing if things don’t go to plan Debbie is willing to look after her for you x
My Ted is lodging with Debbie for the time being as it’s difficult travelling up atm and Ted has been having fortnightly dentals lately after a dreadful local dental down here in lockdown. We’ve really missed him but I know I’m doing the right thing so he can be near Simon and Debbie is the most caring and very experienced when it comes to piggies with special needs!
thank youThis is amazing news! I’m so happy for you!![]()
