2 year old boar whining when trying to pass urine or poops and making strange sound like an abrupt, harsh cough.

Larry and Eric my RB boys both had urinary issues and would cry out with pain so often, I know it is so heartbreaking. Larry had Gabapentin as well as metacam, at one point he even had buprenorphine. His wee sometimes had blood in, as did Eric's. Eric had a stone which explains it but Larry's was literally inflammation of his bladder lining. My bunny has also had courses of tramadol (she has dental issues). I wonder if any of those may keep him more comfortable and give him that chance to improve if he can be completely pain free?
You really are doing an amazing job for him and he will know that ❤️ Keep going x

Vet said yesterday that the metacam was the only pain relief that he could have at home. Did you administer gabapentin, bupenorphine and tramadol at home? He really is in so much pain, I really am thinking of putting him to sleep today. It's not fair trying to keep him alive if he's suffering. I've done everything I can. I don't know what else to do x

Yes the tramadol was tablet that the vets crushed and mixed with water, the gabapentin was a liquid as was the buprenorphine, all administered at home. We also had a pig adopted from us years ago who is on tramadol liquid long term and he does really well on it. May be worth giving your vet a call if you think it may be worth a shot but you know your boy best, and your vet will be able to tell you if they think it's worth a shot.
I'm so sorry it's not better news x

Hi all, Dexter seems to be in alot of pain and it is now around every 15 minutes he is shrieking, I think it is when he is trying to pass urine.

He is currently on 0.17 ml of rheumacam per day however, due to his pain I have been giving him this dose twice but he is still struggling 😥.

He currently weighs 1098 and has dropped over 100g since Thursday. I wondered if anyone could tell me if I could up his dose anymore and what amount could I safely go to per day? Any advice is much appreciated, thanks.

I'm sorry to hear this.
I’m afraid we cannot tell you the dose he can have, only a qualified vet can do so.

I'm so sorry this is happening to you. If he can't pass urine at all it is an emergency and he needs to see a vet as quickly as you are able. But if you are finding small wet patches, or if he is wet underneath - like he is dribbling but not peeing properly - it could be a partial blockage maybe caused by swelling or inflammation or just that he's trying to hold it in because it hurts to go. Still serious and unpleasant but not such an emergency. This happened to George when a large stone formed in his penis and caused a big bulge to appear in his lower tummy, but fortunately the blockage was not complete and after an hour it had gone down again so we got to the vet the next morning. The reason it is serious is that the bladder will continue to swell and (according to my vet) one of two things can happen: either the bladder can rupture (which can actually be surgically repaired sometimes) or the pressure damages the kidneys (unfortunately a lot more serious and often the end for piggy as nothing can be done).

Baytril should start to show an effect within the first 24-48 hours, but George's last UTI was almost unaffected by the Baytril he was prescribed (twice a day) and it was only when he started Septrin that his loud, frequent crying quietened down... we could hear him all over the house. If you're not seeing any difference after 48 hours contact the vet again (although they may tell you to wait for 3 days rather than 2... but it's still worth letting them know). With George's UTI he went in his bag and didn't come out unless I heaved him out for his meds. I've no experience with the Rheumacam, so sorry. George is currently on roughly 0.4ml metacam (1.5mg/ml) twice a day (only a guess as we have one of those 'unit' syringes rather than a ml one). I will say that his UTI-based squealing wasn't much affected by his painkiller - it only calmed down once he started the ABs. Poor Dexter x

Hi, thankyou for your reply. He is passing urine but in small amounts, so I do think he is avoiding going to toilet due to his pain. I think the rheumacam may be the same as metacam, just a different brand name. I am only supposed to give him 0.17 ml per day but this dose seems so small, so I have upped it now to 0.2 twice a day and I'm thinking of upping it to 0.25 or 0.3 twice instead until I can see a vet. I really am losing hope now.

I started him on baytril a week ago with some I had left from October, so I'm thinking It may have lost some of its potency as there was no progress. However, started him on new batch on Saturday so today is only day two of fresh medcine.

I picked him up yesterday and caught his wound, poor boy. I'm panicking incase I have made his wound worse or even punctured through it deeper on the inside, as it is quite a hole. My finger actually went into the wound and he made the loudest squeal. After putting him back in cage I noticed he had bled onto towel, so not sure if this came from his wee wee or wound.

I have been told to fill his hole with Manuka honey twice per day but haven't been cleaning it first as vet didn't advise me to do this and getting him out is really stressing him at the moment. Do you think the honey will be enough to keep wound clean as it has antibacterial properties already? I just dont want him in pain poor soul x

This is blood that came after catching his wound yesterday, again not sure if its from the wound or his wee. The other thing is Manuka honey. Also felt a little more swelling/lumpy, hope this isn't another abscess x

Day 3 of fresh baytril I meant, my brain just isn't working at the moment x

Firstly please be kind to yourself - you are clearly under enormous pressure and totally exhausted.
Remember you are doing your absolute best, and you also know your piggy better than anyone.
Try to get some rest and take a break and see how you feel.
Do you have anyone supporting you while caring for Dexter?

Manuka honey can be a miracle cure, but personally I would also be trying to flush the wound before applying it.
How is his urination now?
Any piggy who can not urinate freely is a worry.
What strength is the rheumacam? Somewhere on the table it should sit the active ingredient as mg per ml.

We are all here to support you and hopefully after all of your efforts he will turn the corner very soon.

What a tough time for you all, but we're here to help you if we can! It's good he is at least peeing a little bit x

Thankyou so much for your reply. Your right, I am exhausted, nothing seems to be going right. No, I am completely alone at the moment, I have my dear mother supporting me but she is also extremely unwell so it's just me. To top it off my other piggie Ruby has began squeaking when pooping now and Deliah my other piggie seems to be wretching now and again, not sure if its just due to the fact she eats way to fast! I suppose they all eat fast tho, greedy little pigs! I'm having no luck!

Dexters urination still seems incredibly painful for him, poor boy. Ok, should I just clean wound with warm boiled water and say a cotton wool pad beforehand or should I add salt? Also the rheumacam bottle says 0.020 x rheumacam oral suspension 1.5mg (dog). I will add a picture of the rheumacam bottle. Thank you for your appreciated support 🙏 x

Hi

You can safely go up to 0.4 ml (or even a bit higher from what we have seen prescribed) twice daily for a 1 kg piggy, so you have got a lot of leeway. I would start with giving the prescribed amount twice daily and then work up from there. Try to keep it about 12 hour intervals, as much as you practically and reasonably can since guinea pigs have a much faster metabolism than dogs or cats. Unlike cats and dogs, they tolerate high levels much better, even for the long term.

Rheumocam is essentially the same as dog metacam (1.5 mg/ml). Your boy is pretty much on a bottom entry dosage.
My very arthritic little old ladies are on long term metacam; but what my local general vet has in store is rheumocam. They are on 0.3 ml twice daily for about 800g of body weight. Just to give you a practical comparison. Metacam is an analgesic, i.e. an anti-inflammatory and painkiller.

Ok great thank you so much for your advice. So essentially I could give him 0.8 ml a day? So 0.4 ml twice a day? This is so reassuring as the dose he is on is having no effect from what I can see.

Awww arthritis, that must be tough on your little ones, does the metacam give them relief?

Our Larry was on 0.4ml twice daily. I really hope this big increase in pain relief will help him feel better. You should see the results pretty quickly I would think! Fingers crossed 🤞❤️

Yes, it gives them relief together with glucosamine.

I would recommend to try 0.2 ml twice a day first and see how that works.

Thanks, me too. It really frustrates me that the vet after seeing how much pain he's in didn't think to up his dose from the last visit. I'm so pleased that the forum exists and all of you guys are here to give me any much needed advice 🙏

Me too, I like to think all of our different experiences can be really helpful to others in the same position 😍
Larry and Eric had Cystease too, and it certainly never did them any harm so I'd definitely carry on with that too! ❤️

I dont mean to derail my own thread but i have been rather worried about another member. Just wanted to ask if everyone had been following the Motu thread? I have been trying to support Motu's owner and got a message today saying his last boar has now stopped eating also. I advised them to post a new thread on here so everyone could offer any advice but I'm not sure they have. What a terrible time they must be having too x

Yes there is no doubt that this forum and the members have helped me more than anything else in mine and my piggies time of need.

I'm also a bit concerned about the Manuka honey as been advised to fill up the wound with it but it just keeps falling out. Wish I could put a plaster over the top to keep it in. I just hope it still works even tho it is not staying in x

Had a message, the poor boy has passed x

Oh I'm so so sorry 😭 You tried so hard and did everything you could for him.
At least he is free now. RIP Dexter over the Bridge 🌈❤️
