2 year old boar whining when trying to pass urine or poops and making strange sound like an abrupt, harsh cough.

Whatever happens, you have given him his best chance for more happy days in spite of the personal cost. I can't guess what will happen, but he is in the best place to be poorly - it's great that they're clearly keeping a close watch over him. Wishing him the best 🤞🏻

Oh no my poor baby, he's running a fever. Vet just rang and she is trying to bring his temperature down. What have I done, I should have let him go x
If you hadn’t tried the operation you’d now be thinking maybe I should have operated. Sending healing vibes to Dexter and a hug to you.

He's in the best place, they'll be doing everything they can. @weepweeps is right, if you hadn't gone ahead you'd probably always wonder if he could be saved x
I hope it's good news this morning x

Hi, they managed to bring Dexter's temperature down lastnight, got a call early hours of the morning saying he had become a bit more alert and responsive.

I have just collected him and got him back into his cage, he is still very quiet and laying in his bed but he did jump out and have about 5 poops and he has managed to nibble on his pepper.

I have been in yet another panic as vet said to segregate him from other piggies for now and I had nothing to do it. So had to run into not so local DIY shop and all I could get was a wire garden thing. I am now worrying incase they may get their heads trapped as gaps are rather big.

Also my other 2 piggies are now in the smaller enclosed area due to the plastic parts of my extension being a hazard on Dexter's incision. There's nothing I can do about it, just hope they'll be OK for couple of days. Nightmare!

Hi everyone, just an update on Dexter. Had him back to the vets today, as he is still passing very few poops, little urine and isn't eating how he should be. Hes very groggy/lethargic too so really worried. Also noticed swelling around his incision, I cried my heart out! Vet said she thinks it may just be swollen scar tissue and he is back again on Wednesday for another check up. She said it is his third surgery since June so coming round may take a little longer and swelling around the incision/scar tissue is expected however, we are not out of the woods yet. Please send healing vibes Dexter's way, he really needs them.

Sending Dexter healing vibes and also some to you, since it’s so stressful for you as well.

Hi, it is now day 6 since Dexter's surgery and he still is not passing a great lot of stools. I have come across around 15 in the last 48 hours. His hay intake is still poor, has eaten maybe 5 pellets but is now loving his veggies again.

When cleaning his bedding I came across these wee wee patches and I am a little concerned of the colour. Now he is on 3 meds, emeprid, rheumacam and enrocare so I wonder if this could be changing the colour of his urine. I think there is that redish, pink tint to it, so was worried it could be blood. What do you think? One picture has flash on, other doesn't. The light isn't great in the room.

He is also still receiving critical care and probiotics so maybe it could be that too. He is back at the vets tomorrow so I will mention this. On the bright side, his swelling does seem to be decreasing little by little. However, he is still lethargic and seems very sleepy, again could be the meds. His weight also seems to be OK, weighed him lastnight and he had gained 20 grams from previous day, gonna weigh him again tonight.

He could be eating ALL of his poops. My Pepper did this when he was ill for a long time. He was on antibiotics for ages. His urine changed colour and hasn’t gone back to normal. I did take him to the vets and they scanned his tummy to make sure there were no stones or anything going on with his bladder. Once they had ruled everything else out they said it was the antibiotics that were to blame.

This is so hard. Please just keep telling yourself that you are doing the absolute best you can, and you have nothing to accuse yourself of, however things turn out. You are stepping up as an excellent pig mother in his time of need, and your love and care for him is very obvious. You are doing good under really difficult circumstances. Well done.

Hi all, it's now been nearly 2 weeks since Dexter's op and I have still got him separated from his mum and sister. Just wanted to know if anyone can advise me on how long before they can be reunited. The poor boy seems so down and is missing his pals.

I know your vet had said to separate them but it’s not something you want to do unless absolutely essential, and even then only separate for the shortest possible time. This is because they recover better when with their friend but also due to the risk a medical separation can pose on a bond.

If he is well enough then carry out the rebonding asap.
Ensure you go through the proper rebonding process and that it takes place on neutral territory outside of the cage (don’t just remove a divider)

Let us know how it goes

Just got Dexter out for his medcine and noticed he was bleeding a little, I don't know if he's caught his wound or has maybe been biting at it. He looks to have knocked his scab off. Is this anything to be concerned about? The first image is from yesterday and the second is from today. Thanks.

Hi just looked at Dexter's wound again and this is how it looks today. Just noticed he's began shrieking again, I think it's when he's trying to pass poops. I am worried yet again x20221216_224055.webp

Oh dear, poor Dexter and poor you!
I can't really advise, but if it happened to me on a working day I would be getting an emergency appointment at the vet to get it seen to. The problem is, would an out of hours emergency vet have the facilities and knowledge for restitching the wound or whatever it requires?

I should think it is important to keep the wound clean until it can be looked at. Maybe it could be covered - I think some people have tried covering wounds with socks or something, but Dexters looks a bit close to the legs for that to work.

Sending healing vibes 💓

The only thing I can do is ring first thing in the morning and hopefully get him seen by the afternoon. This really is a nightmare. He only started biting at it the last 48 hrs, I just can't understand why he has left it alone for nearly 2 weeks and has decided to pull his stitches out now. I bathed him in salt water earlier too and gave him some baytril left over from my Rainbow 🌈 piggie x

Hi, just had him seen and they think he's had an abscess and it's burst. The vet sent us home with Manuka honey and more painkillers. Been to told to apply the Manuka honey twice a day. She said it looks worse than it is. I just hope it works x

Hi everyone, had Dexter back to the vets again today as he began whining in pain again last night. I wasn't sure if it was still down to his wound being completely open and remaining to have discomfort there or something else.

I got him out this morning to try and get a urine sample for the vets and he he could barely wee at all. The wee wee he did do had blood in it but unfortunately, I could not get a decent sized sample to take with me to the vets.

On taking him, they have told me to continue with the Manuka honey for his wound, painkiller and have given me baytril also. They said they did not want to close wound up as there may still be infection there.

I just wanted to ask...maybe a silly question but could there be a possibilty that the non-piggy savvy vet who performed his emergency hernia operation has caused some sort of internal injury/bleeding? It's just his urine has been pinky since he had his op over 3 weeks ago now. If this was the case surely we would have lost him by now?

I really am struggling at the moment, emotionally, mentally and financially and do not want to prolong his agony any longer if this could be something serious. The vet didn't seem too worried but when I'm here 24/7 hearing him cry out in pain every 15 mins it's heartbreaking. I really need some advice.

Also if it is a urine infection, how long would it take for baytril to kick in? I had some leftover from my 🌈 piggie Heidi and have been giving him that since Sunday and also cystease. Would the bleeding have stopped by now? Thanks guys!

Poor Dexter and poor you. This is really hard. I don't have enough knowledge to give you any advice, I just want to express support.

Larry and Eric my RB boys both had urinary issues and would cry out with pain so often, I know it is so heartbreaking. Larry had Gabapentin as well as metacam, at one point he even had buprenorphine. His wee sometimes had blood in, as did Eric's. Eric had a stone which explains it but Larry's was literally inflammation of his bladder lining. My bunny has also had courses of tramadol (she has dental issues). I wonder if any of those may keep him more comfortable and give him that chance to improve if he can be completely pain free?
You really are doing an amazing job for him and he will know that ❤️ Keep going x
