11 week old runt losing weight

Clover's just come out of the vet and it is indeed her teeth. Her lower one's have grown over her tongue. The vets said she's dying and we can either try and treat her (monthly anesthesia, £200-300 a time likely monthly and won't ever get better) or PTS. She's also suffering from aspiration from inability to swallow.

I mentioned Simon Maddock and she said that she and many vets disagree entirely with what they do.

Don't really know what we can do. I don't want to give up on her, but I can't afford that kind of money.

So sorry 😞 Go get an appointment with Simon and Kim if you can, at last will you get a proper assessment and give her a chance, conscious dentals only cost £60 and a one off consultation fee of a similar cost. The guinea pigs just sits on a bench and is held around the back end by a vet nurse, a little brace is placed in their mouth to keep the mouth open and the vet gently files the teeth down. The whole procedure takes about 5-10 minutes.

We are willing to offer her a permanent place here at TEAS. Simon and Kim are amazing and it really makes me angry when vets say they disagree with what they do, but haven’t even bothered to go and find out more xx
Would you be able to get her seen sooner than me?

I've booked an appointment for 26th August but I can't see her lasting that long. I'll have to keep calling for a cancellation.
I really am thinking of you.
Honestly remember to be kind to yourself.
It is clear you are doing everything you realistically can, and whatever happens you have done your absolute best to advocate for Clover.

Oh she is adorable..

Really disappointed in your vet saying they and so many disagree with what C&R do. I drove my boy there (only from Oxford) after our regular vet examined him after 300g weight loss and said he had spurs that needed removing. They couldn't operate for three days, so I got an emergency appointment at C&R and Simon took him out the back, came back 15 minutes later with two very small, hard pieces of hay that had been lodged between his back teeth and been rubbing, causing pain and stopping him eating. He was right as rain from then on.

Happy to help in any way. Please do try and get her seen ASAP - happy to be a stop-gap if needed/form a train to get her there x

I find very frustrating that so many vets won't acknowledge the amazing work that Simon and Kim do. What we do, here at TEAS, has been insulted too! One vet said that TEAS sounds a bit Alice in Wonderlandish! No, it's not a fairy story, I work bloomin damn hard!

That's horrific! I really do question some vets' motivation, I think a lot of it is financial, they just don't seem to understand the care, love, and heartache involved outside of invoicing for appointments, it really frustrates me.
Thankfully we have a lovely vet for our bigger pets, who also offers holistic treatments, but we wouldn't dream of going anywhere other than Northampton for the piggies now.

As an aside, thank you for all you do for the piggies in your care x

I’d call for one of their emergency appointments, that are released every morning at 8 am.
When I needed to take Meg last year, I called for an emergency appointment at 8am on a Monday morning and was offered 10am initially but when I said I had to travel from Bournemouth, they had another later appointment available for Meg which I took.

Your really do amazing work at TEAS. The piggies you care for are often written off by their local vets and you are their last chance. Having visited TEAS it is heart warming to see these piggies receiving the care they need and enjoying normal piggy lives.

You also support a lot of people on the forum with 'dental' piggies and we are all grateful for the help you give. :luv:

It makes me so angry too. I was told by my local vet that Ted should be PTS and there was nothing more he could do (the vet actually made him far worse than before doing a badly performed dental) I managed to travel up to Northampton and Ted had his first conscious dental and came out of the Cat&Rabbit eating hay! the first time in over three months
Simon and Kim are amazing, shame on all those vets that think otherwise! 🤬

Clover went to Simon in Northampton this afternoon. Her teeth were indeed awful and he said that it's uncommon for a pig's teeth to be so hollow and wobbly on top of them being that overgrown. She's not in good shape and he said that when we go back in two weeks we'll hopefully be able to decide whether to PTS or continue.

Thanks for all your help, I'll try and update.

I’m pleased you were able to go and see him, what treatment (and f any) did he do?

keeping everything crossed for little Clover x

So glad you were able to see him. What time were you there? I was there this afternoon x

She had a dental and came away with painkillers and treatment for ringworm that 4 vets before the one we saw in Bristol had missed.

Hoping for a miracle for her right now.

That’s excellent that you got her seen by an expert. Hopefully the pain killers and dental will be enough to help her pick up in the coming days/weeks. You are doing your best for her and I’m sure she appreciates it. Take care. ❤️

Glad to hear that Clover is getting the help she needs. Fingers and paws crossed here for her. xx

So glad you managed to get an appointment with Simon, you are such a caring owner x
Fingers and paws crossed for little Clover, Simon is a miracle worker, whatever Simon says will be correct and you can fully trust his judgement. I really don’t like taking my piggies to any other vets and we live down in Cornwall

She lost weight this morning but is still 185g (down from 196g). I forgot to give her painkillers last night so I think that's why she lost. Fingers crossed for gaining weight tomorrow! She's a different pig since having her teeth done, she has a belly, is interested in things and actually moves about! I'm hoping it's good news on the 26th when we go back to the C&R Clinic.
