LisaJazz: Mabel's new friend arrives on Tues am. She is a black satin called Dolly. I can't wait and Mabel is excited too I'm sure.
I put the washer on tonight, crossed my fingers, and left her to it. She doesn't seem any the worse for it:))

As for guineas in the kitchen, and hygiene, mabe it depends on the size of the kitchen? Obviously you want them away from food prep. areas. I have a dog and a cat too and we all survive!

Mabel has only been in the kitchen for 2 days so its early to say about smell but so far all we notice is the sweet smell of hay. I use newspaper, aubiose, hay for burrowing and vet bed in the sleeping area. Comfy!

I get my Easibed delivered, but you can get it from any equestrian feed suppliers. Seems to be popular with the 'horse community'. I am sure if you look it up on the internet there will be somewhere nearby you can get it. Where abouts are you? I'll try and find some for you if you like.:)

I totally agree with you about the dog and cat thing. Mine eat on the kitchen floor. I don't mind the cats or dog in the kitchen as long as it's not on the counters so why not a cage (which is on a stand - again not on counters).

So tomorrow then, let us know how she gets on with her new cage mate. Cute!

Hi
just to let you know that Dolly, Mabel's new cage mate arrived on Tuesday. She is absoloutely gorgeous, a black satin, and very cuddly. Although I haven't handled her much yet, having been told to give her time to settle in it is clear when you pick her up that she really loves being cuddled.
Sadly for her Mabel tho it was loathe at first sight! All attempts by Mabel to be friendly/curious were firmly rebuffed and they have been in a Mexican stand off ever since! Interspersed by more than a few skirmishes which are not nice to see or hear.
I am so sad - I really hoped they would throw their little piggie arms around each other and be friends from the get go. Not so. Its obviously going to take a while.....But Dolly had done a lot of journeying to get to us so that may be why she is feeling cross. And Mabel is so young and skittish it may be her manners are not what they should be.
Fingers crossed everyone and any advice gratefully received. Though this might not be the right thread for it I guess.

Hi
we introduced them first of all in the run with lots of food around etc :)p, and Dolly nipped Mabel straight off! From then it was war. But, at nutmeg's suggestion we just gave them some "neutral" floor time and there was a fair bit of kissing, sniffing going on. However, when, dsepite our wall building (buying a play pen tomorrow, lol) they both went AWOL under the settee I had to put them in the run while cleaning out. And they are back to hiding from each other!
Still I'm not worried so much now cos I know they CAN get on when they want to!:)p

How and where did you introduce them?

If you have a kitchen area in your cage, or a litter tray, have you tryed using yesterdays news? Its a kitty litter thats non toxic and its had really good reviews. It controls odor really well and doesnt track if you use fleece. You can order it online, and its not that expensive. This is what I'm going to use I think.... how many towels to do you use under your fleece? Somebody recommended using mattress pads under the fleece, instead of towels because they're much more absorbant. Do you have girls or boys? Ive heard boys tend to be more smelly as they like to spread their boar stink around...nice. lol x

i now have 13 boars and use newspaper, fleece & towels for 11 of them,i clean every 2-3 days and spot clean everday inbetween,i rarely have stinky cages so i guess it just depends on the individual pigs and how often they are cleaned x

Thanks for the info re Yesterdays News - I think I've seen it in Tesco or soemwhere similar. I may give it a try when th Aubiose runs out as I do find Aubiose gets [*]Everywhere![/*] I've just started putting puppy pads under the aubiose instead of newspapers. They are quite expensive but as I only have 1 cage its not so serious and they last longer than the newspaper but now I'm thinking I may put newspaper [*]under[/*] the puppy pads for belt and braces.
Certainly got no smell problems since bringing them in but then I only have 2 girls so we are small fry compared to the rest of you!x>>

I seem to have managed to get it a bit under control which is good as I felt really low that only my guineas were stinky despite being cleaned every other day FULLY and spot cleaned every day.

I got a huge huge litter tray last weekend so they have 2 litter trays now. The hay rack is above one and the hay balls above the other one. About 80% of poop is now being caught in those along with lots of wee. They are changed every day and the cage swept through. It means that I can change every 3rd day now instead of every other day so 2 or 3 times a week.

I also ran out of spring greens for a day and they smelled less again so thinking that the greens make them smell a bit more so still feeding greens but a bit less than before and topping up with more pepper and other veggies.

It seems to be working out.

you know what i was just gunna post a thread asking why my piggies have suddenly started to smell-but i think youve just answered my question!gemx
