Worried my Boar is dying post surgery.

So sorry that you are being evicted.
There seems to be a rash on ‘no fault’ evictions at present but it’s so tough on people losing their home.

Glad Noop shows signs of improvement, however small the signs are.

Holding you in my heart ❤️

You're doing great ❤️ if it reassures you, I have 2 piggies currently on calpol (120mg per 5ml solution which is the infant calpol, the others are too strong!) as well as gabapentin and metacam, prescribed by an exotics specialist and it works great and is well tolerated.

Just a suggestion but if he is struggling to eat and not wanting to chew, I find really reducing the size of mouthful of syringe food you offer can help as well as chasing it with a small amount of water. I've had to go down to as little as 0.02ml at one point to rally a pig who had stopped swallowing and gone floppy. They seem to be able to swallow liquids easier than solids when struggling. This unfortunately makes feeds take 10xs longer than they already do (while saving the aforementioned pig I only got 12 hours of sleep for the entire week) but she is now absolutely fine.

But fingers crossed the additional pain relief helps, wishing him a full recovery!

Thank you for the suggestion, I'll try smaller mouthfuls! It can take a good hour or so to get 15ml in and if that ends up being longer, so be it. To be perfectly honest, I'm not sleeping much anyway at the moment. 😅 Myself and Netflix are becoming very well acquainted in the early hours of the morning. A few episodes of Friday Night Dinner will see me through!

Please may I ask the Calpol dosage you use, incase I get caught short? The vet did say I could use all three but I was sceptical as I hadn't heard of it as an option before.

I'm relieved to hear your piggy pulled through. I hope I can support Noop with achieving the same.

I totally relate, I'm sure ive watched the majority of youtube at this point with all the feeding ive had to do 🤣
At the moment they're on 0.49ml which is a large dose, but they have pretty considerable skeletal issues, one gets that twice a day and the other 3xs. Although the usual dose is about half that I believe.

Everything crossed for Noop! Brilliant name by the way

I too had a vet recommended infant Calpol, it was 0.2ml for my 1250g boar and apparently it's yummy.

Wonderful, thank you! That's extremely helpful and reassuring.

Thank you, he chose it himself! You know when you grab a piggy that doesn't want to be grabbed and they do a little backwards scurry and an annoyed grunt? He has a really broad and short nose so his grunts and squeaks are quite deep. He sounded like a tiny, angry trumpet when I picked him up the day we adopted him. A lovely "Noop" sound of rejection! 😅 (Absolute Snuggle-bug now though.)
Thank you for the Calpol explanation. You certainly have your hands full!

Thanks all. He's much less floppy and uncoordinated today. I fed little and often through the night. Small victory a few minutes ago too... Just as I'd finished the morning wound flushing, I offered him a few hay seed heads and he's gobbled them down! He absolutely is capable of eating today. His chewing and acceptance of CC has gradually increased over the last 8 hours too. Gotta keep pushing through!

Thank you, everyone, for your advice and suggestions.

Current routine is a large feed every 12 hours accompanied by .4ml Loxicom and .5ml Metronidazole. Fibreplex and Probiotics at the end. Then wound flushing.
Then some medium feeds every 8 hours accompanied by 0.2ml Gabapentin and then ended with Probiotics and 0.1ml Emeprid.
Smaller top up feeds sprinkled throughout the day, whenever I have a moment, offering up some thin strips of Cucumber and/or a little bit of Aubergine as well. (His favourite.)
I'm going to stick to this for as long as humanly possible.

(My two dental pigs, because one dental pig isn't stressful and expensive enough... 🥲)

Aw, they are both gorgeous. You are not alone if you think you are the only one that’s been blessed with two dental piggies. The two 🌈 boy brothers Bill and Ted in my avatar were both dental piggies. One had a spur on one molar and the other had wonky incisors. Simon always used to laugh and say between them they had a perfect set of teeth!

You are doing great and it’s lovely to hear Noop is doing better now x

Catching up with this thread and thinking about you and Noop! Just offering more support and well wishes - it certainly does seem that stressful events pile up on each other. Stay strong!

Hi all,

Just an update for anyone following or curious. The last few weeks have been absolutely ridiculous for us with all the house stuff and keeping Noop going! He had his post surgery check up the other week and Simon says everything looks good. We kept the surgical site open and flushed for a few weeks and it's healed nicely. Still feels bulky and rough because the stitches have yet to dissolve but it all seems normal so far.

Noop seems to still be having waves of being better and then suddenly seeming off again which we suspect is digestive. One day his appetite will increase and a day or two later it drops off again and he drops weight again. I'm weighing regularly to adapt my feeding schedule as appropriate. This happened last time he was on antibiotics and it's so frustrating for us all. Two weeks on antibiotics seems to be his tolerable limit. Beyond that, even ending the course, he then seems to suffer weight loss and loss of appetite for several weeks. He frantically wants to chew paper, cardboard, wood, sticks and tissue but little else. He also had a huge bout of heaving hiccups, which was terrifying, but we found some impaction and he fully recovered the instant we relieved it.

I'm just keeping him fed and topped up with Fibreplex and Probiotics in an effort to stabilise his stomach upset but I have no idea how long this will take.

You are doing really well. It's so hard when they can't tell us how they feel. I have a couple of piggies in the past that reacted to ABs like this. It seems they need top up syringe feeds and probiotics (I recommend Fibreplex) for weeks after the last dose before they are right again.
They both got there in the end though.

I’m sorry it’s such a slow journey. It took my Pepper over 8 weeks to start eating for himself. It was the antibiotics which caused him to lose his appetite completely. Keep going. I hope Noop is soon feeling much better.

Thanks, I appreciate the support and encouragement. Things are so hectic here at the moment but taking time to feed this little man is a privilege. He's such a beautiful boy. Back in January he was 1.5kg but ended up on antibiotics for an infected incisor. Throughout that journey he lost over 200g. He eventually stabilised at around 1250g once we settled his stomach but since the abscess, tooth removal and now his digestive concerns he's down to 1110g. Last week I'd pushed him back up to 1180g but he's dropped again over the last few days. His ladies have also over-groomed one of his ears and some of it scabbed and fell off. We had Simon take a look and it's healed fine but Noop looks a bit dishevelled. Some days he's trotting around, playing in the hay, happy as can be. Then the next he'll be miserable with a tummy ache. Hopefully the Fibreplex and ProC will take hold. I best stock up!

Bless him.
Mine never regained their full weight, they stayed 200-300gms down but they did regain their health and had always been chunky boys so it didn't do them any harm to be lighter!
Sending Noop healing vibes, get well soon gorgeous piggy.

I guess it's just one of those things! It's strange seeing him less round but if I can get his health back on track like you both managed, I'll be happy. I've just finished his afternoon feed and I popped him on the floor to make his way home but he's trotted off to where he knows I keep the house packing boxes and he's devouring them! There won't be any left at this rate! Part of me wonders when I should intervene but he's ravenous for the cardboard.

Have you tried giving him poop soup from the poops of one of your girls? (Provided the girls are not on medication)

We did try to make some up but it was a struggle to get it down him. He is crammed into a hide with his preferred lady most of the time though and I have seen him 'bum digging' so I'm assuming she's his personal dispenser! Cardboard, a nearby table leg and Floof's offerings seem to be his snacks of choice.
