My piggy whose four had a chest infection last week and was put on Baytril this, unfortunately caused diarrheoa so on Monday he went back to the vets and was prescribed Kaolin and Bio-lapsis both of which he is accepting he is bright and fairly active but is barely eating just little bits of dried food here and there and some porridge and a little bit of a Banana and Strawberry Smoothie also despite medication his poops are still very soft and smelly.

I guess it's just a case of the natural balance of his tummy righting its self but has anyone got any ideas how long this might take (I know its a bit of a how longs a piece of string? type question)

Thanks

Rocky took several days with this problem. Yes, I was getting worried, but one day, suddenly he crapped normally, and I was so proud of him. :smitten:

wanda he was on Pro-Kolin+ at the dose of 1ml 3 times a day for 24 - 48hrs. when he first came in and was loose and I found that within the 48hrs he was back to normal and he started to pick up with his eating.

Paws crossed for you both :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:
It's the longest 24-36 hours... been there too many times :-\ :-\ :-\
Keep up the extra hand feeds and water etc... and this will def help too O0 O0

Just a thought Wanda have you any Science recovery in ? I use it for chins after a dental and they love it

Hi

Thanks for all your help, he was tried on science recovery when he had his chest infection and he spat it out with force and grace! Howver, I have now discovered the knack of syringe feeding him, in fact I am getting a bit of an expert at it! 8) So I'll ring the vets to see if I can get some for him.

He cost me a small fortune since his arrival, but he's worth every penny

Science Recovery is a big hit with Murphy he cant get enough of it. Expert syringe feeder myself now ;D

I also wonder if he's on enough Kaogel according to the companies website the dose is 0.5mls-1mls for each kilogram of body weight daily he's on 0.5mls daily and he's 1.8kgs

Anyway off back to the vets for some science recovery. I will be getting an invite to their Christmas do the rate of knots I am going!

Just been to the vets now have Science recovery, how awful does it smell :o! Got a feeling I am about to seriously annoy Sweep :tickedoff: Spoke to the receptionist/nurse while I was there and she thinks it would be best if I brought him back in for another check up, he was booked in for Monday anyway so I have cancelled that and will be going tonight at 5.20pm.

Will let you know how we get on

Sweep has now decided that he likes Science recovery but has only taken 3mls, going to give him half and hour then give him some Bio lapis and some more science recovery

Mary suggested to mix some liquidised veg in with the Science to make more of a normal meal for my Murphy so you could try that Wanda Sweep may like it more.

Touch wood so far Murphy cant get enough of the Science. Hope he doesnt get addicted to it!

Know what you mean about the smell its awful. I thought it would smell better than that as Louise said the Critical Care cuzzy is on smells nice!.

Latest update

Sweep was seen by the vet and I think that the vet he saw was the practices small and exotic pet specialist, his bottom molars are seem to be overgrown, so he's been kept in overnight for regular sub cut fluids and syringe feeding and then in the morning they are going to pop him under an anasthetic and check his teeth properly and do anywork necessarry. Felt so lost leaving him at the vets but, she has reassured me that there is a good chance that he will survive the anasthetic, still feel gutted though :(

Good luck darling, muumy loves you.

Oh poor Sweep :(good luck at the vets and get well soon for mummy :smitten: :smitten:

Could the vet not do the dentals without aneasthetic?,it is only necessary for very complicated work.

Poor little Sweep. He is such a cutie and he has been through so much already.

Keeping all our paws crossed for you,

Sammy, Rupert, Tom and Jez :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

I did ask because I am aware that quite often it can be done without an anasthetic but she explained that it would be very difficult because his teetha re trapping his tounge and to do it without anasthetic would risk cutting his tongue

I very recently took a piggy to my vet because the molars were trapping the tongue. The work was done without aneasthetic and the piggy was fine.

Dental work is often done where the tongue is trapped and no anaesthetic used. If your vet isn't confident then I wouldn't risk it but for regular dental work find one that will do it without :)

I know dental work can be done without but given how much weight he's lost in the past week and he's already underweight to start with I didn't think I had much time to start looking round for someone who can do it without I trust my vets and as already said they have kept him overnight to give him lots of fluids and syringe feed him to give him the best possible chance all I can do is wait and hope

I know how you feel love.... but i'm sure your vets will try to only have him under for the quickest of times so they can do the dental work and then wake him up pronto :)
I hate having to have work done with the gas also but they refuse to do it without in Australia :-\ :-\ :-\ i don't think anyone's really been shown how it can be done this way... tho i believe there's a guy in Sydney but that's an 8hr flight :o :o
Paws crossed love for Sweep :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

Well not be long now, if love could get that lad through he would sail through with not probs, as I am sure all our pets would :smitten:. I am going to ring the vets at 9 to see how he is and then head to bed to try and catch a couple of hours sleep (was on night duty last night).

Thanks we really need it today, have rang thew vets and he's had a good night and is curled up in his hay and has accepted some fluids.

with you all the way love, been thru this too many times... O0 O0

Hugs for you, sending them via the cyber pigmail right now :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:
