My new pig smells so horrible! i have to fully clean and scrub out her cage every other day because after 48hrs it reeks! i think part of it is she sits in the same area for a lot day and poops and pees there. any advice or other possibilities? i have given her a bath but now she has lice treatment and I'm scared i will wash it all off or something!
she came from icky conditions so i dont know if that is still lingering, or its something with her diet, or just all her wastes in the same area!
thanks for any advice

What bedding are you using love?
If you use fleece or hay and newspaper combination you should only need to clean out daily and not do full clean out for a week...... i actually do a mini clean twice a day and i have newspaper with hay on top and also some towels/fleece and then weekly i take everything out and do a total clean.
How big is her house..... ?

i am using a virgin wood bedding that i have been really pleased with for Whinny. i tried newspaper under it for Wiley (tried it with Whinny too but she eats newspaper) and within a day the area of the cage where she spends most of her time, the news paper was soaked with urine! i had given her an igloo but she would rarely come out and so now i have half the cage covered with a pillow case and she hides under there. unfortunately she is still in my small cage which is perhaps 2ftx 1ft approx. i have a larger cage but Whinny is in it and with Wiley's lice they can't go together yet :/
she is very shy and skittish, I'm hoping she gets to moving around more when i can combine the two and she gets more comfortable!

Sorry got caught up on the phone here at work.....
Wood shavings aren't really recommended as some piggies can have a reaction to them....... http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=289
Just newspaper i find isn't enough either.... that's why i have hay on top, this soaks thru the hay and they're not directly sitting in their urine.
Maybe try the fleecy's many on here love that it whisks away the urine and they're not scalding their little bits and pieces or tootsies!
Yes i think also the size is against her too, not a lot of room to move around so she's probably sitting in the same spot a fair bit.
You really have had a bad run eh :...
Hope Wiley is better soon x>>

its not really wood shavings its wood pulp, idk if that makes a difference but its low dust and supposed to help control odor. its called healthy pet if you want to look it up. i havent really heard a lot about it but Whinny seems to do fine with it. if you know anything either way about it please let me know! :D it says on the bag its supposed to absorb well and control ammonia, but I'm sure every bag says that :p
and yeah she kind of hides in her covered section all day. she will sometimes come out around us but not for very long. most of her food is on the uncovered side and she eats when were away or at night most of the time. in front of use she will run to the uncovered side and then scurry right back!
should i try the fleece under the bedding or newspaper under fleece under bedding? or something else....
thank you so so much for your help with my little Wiley!

Hello

Could you list the foods you are giving Wiley per day as some can cause pigs to be a bit stinky.

Suzy x

She gets as much timothy hay as she wants, about 1/4 cup of timothy complete pellets sometimes a little bit more per day, and a few pieces of romaine lettuce 1 or 2 times a day. I also have given her a baby carrot a couple times which she will eat about half off. ive tried giving her red and green bell pepper as well but she wont eat it.

tried spot cleaning the cage...i think shes really only peeing in one corner where she lays all day. i feel so bad, is this bad for her feet and skin? should i clean 2x a day? i feel like she is traumatized every time i clean it bc shes still so scared of me!

Hi sorry i had to leave the other day..... (my Dad had a proceedure on his ear)

Sitting in their own urine can scald their little feet..... so if there's some way you can make it dryer it would be for the best.
She maybe just a messy pigglie too ") so spot cleaning twice a day will help.

Try the fleece where she's sitting most of the time and see if this helps :)

give them both some little kisses from us all xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

thank you for all your advice! i hope your dad is doing well!
i will try to buy some fleece tomorrow if i get paid (was supposed to get paid by one of my jobs today but didnt :/ )
poor little piggy feet!
and piggies appreciate kisses!

If you have some towels that haven't got an open weave you could use them in the meantime :)
awww thanks for the good wishes, my Dad is doing really well !

More little kisses and chinnie rubs too xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
