What To Put Under Liner

I use Biocatlet paper based cat litter in their hay tray.. but i change twice a day cos i am bit of a clean freak and they poop loads in it..... i use liners but in areas they wee more i use a smaller one on top so can just whip it out easy... the cat litter is £10.50 ( ouch) for 25lt from Pets@home...... not seen any other paper based cat litter anywhere x

I have been using carefresh in the litter tray as I couldn't find any paper based cat litter anywhere locally, this was working out a bit expensive. I then tried my own shredded paper which is ok but needs changing at least twice a day as it's not very absorbent. The last two days I've put in a folded newspaper, so far so good, tear off top page, roll up pops and hay and put it in compost bin, rest of wet paper goes in the recycling box. Thank goodness for free papers, I pick some up every time I pass the station.

:D Oh, thank Goodness! Somebody else puts wet paper in the recycling box! I wondered if I was being naughty!

As for cheap towels, eBay is a good place to look. I recently got a load from there as I am changing from cage liners to towels and fleece.

Pairs of jumbo bath sheets 90 X 145 cm £8.99 each
Also jumbo bath sheets single 90 X 180 cm £8.35

Oh dear you're not meant to do that?

Ah thanks. Unfortunately with vet bills, getting some more grids and a few other things, I'll think I'll have to leave the towels for the moment. The fleece is mainly ok for the moment as they go on newspaper for toilet and they can go out of the cage during the day. Also, mind me asking why you're changing from fleece liners?

Aubiose is brilliant for hay trays . I can get mine from a local equine supplier for about £10 for a 20Kg bale.

I got my towels from the ASDA smartprice range.

@CarnivalPiggy ,piggies tend to wee/poo where they eat or somewhere thats sheltered…so i placed a litter tray under their hay racks, this works really well. Obviously they will go elsewhere but i find the litter trays help, i line trays with news paper, a thin layer of wood chips and a covering of hay :)

This is exactly what I do. I have two litter trays, newspaper in the bottom, Aubiose ontop, then lots of hay and then cardboard box shelters for them to sit under. That way my fleece can last a week as 90% of what they do is in the two litter trays. They sleep under there in the hay and they go there to eat the hay and forage for what they want. Then they poop and wee whilst they are doing both. Just make sure you replace the hay and soiled aubiose (or whatever chips/shavings etc. you use) on a daily basis. I find this works better than even having a hay rack, because mine prefer to sit in the hay to eat rather than reach up. If I put both hay rack and the hay filled litter tray down then, the hay rack gets left. This also means I get less hay dragged around the fleece area of the cage as it is generally confined to the litter tray.

As I said I replace the litter trays daily. Tip the lot into a plastic bag, spray of deep clean, wipe dry, then put newspaper, aubiose and new hay back. The piggies love the new hay every day - they get all excited when they hear the rustle of me pulling it out the hay bin next to their cage. So as well as breakfast and dinner time veg it gives them another reason to wheek in excitement! Plus my hay comes in a 20 kilo bag from local pet suppliers and is green. I have only got half way down the bag in 3 months.

It sure beats having to scrape bits of hay off the fleece every two days and then washing and drying the fleece liner, which it would be if I didn't use the litter trays. With a change of trays my fleece liner lasts a week and at a push and turning it over it could go longer if needed.

@CarnivalPiggy @Gimz , to be fair my lot are absolute hay monsters….i put their pellets in in the morn and while they stuff their faces i fill their hays and they abandon pellets…which i don't mind as pellets last longer and ide rather them eat hay till their hearts content. I change the trays every other day and ile be honest there is rarely any hay in their trays left . full hay racks twice daily….fatties! :)

Ah ok! What hay trays do you use though? My piggies don't like their hay rack as much as the tray but I need a new one, preferably not online.

literally just get a cats litter tray…or a dinner tray…anything flat with edges will do the trick.
A lady local to me makes and sells various fleece bits for guinea pigs including a hay cushion…so its made of fleece with a gap on top and at end and you stuff it with hay, she's online though but i can't recommend her products enough, she's on holiday at mo and back in a week i believe….look at her page on Facebook Snoozie's Cozies
Alternatively you can buy metal hay cubes from wilkinsons or pet shops

Rectangular Plastic cat litter trays for £2. These work better than the corner piggie ones you get as they are less limiting about where to place them in the runs and are more stable. Plus you can get more hay in them too!
