Friday night (6th June) through to saturday morning (7th June) this week sees some very unsettled weather involving thunderstorms and torrential rain (with hail and very gusty winds) forecast to hit the UK

There are risks of flash flooding -but as yet we don;t know who will get the worst of this weather.

Please make sure on friday evening before you go to bed that your animals are secured in sheltered places and above the risk of floodwater.

The conditions are still continuing to build up to cause severe thunderstorms on saturday with lots of lightning, hail (possibly large), and torrential rain causing serious flash flooding for those caught underneath a storm. There may also be the odd weak tornado. Storms are most likely during saturday afternoon/evening and it will also be exceptionally humid throughout the day..

The storms could hit anywhere in the UK except North Scotland, and the front will be travellling in a north-northeasterly direction up the country,. The most severe weather is currently forecast from south east up through West/East Midlands/East Anglia and either side of the Pennines.

Currently the Met office have revised their weather warning in terms of reducing the areas affected, reducing their level of confidence that this severe weather will occur but increasing the impact it will have it it does indeed come to fruition.

The weather community is getting quite excited!...but convective weather is unpredictable to forecast accurately in terms of intensity or area - so we won;t know any more details of how this will play out until the models issued at friday 6pm are studied..

I will update after Fri evening.

Thanks for posting :-) Thankfully none of my animals are kept at floor level (rabbits have a double tier so can get away if needed) but my yard has never flooded but I do still worry.

UPDATE

As a result of the sunshine today, some localised "home grown" storms are already sparking up in Wales. There may be more later on practically anywhere on the country but these are just the "outriders" indicating unstable conditions.

There are two main events happening through this evening/tomorrow.
Firstly, a trough will hit the SW/S/SE coast at approx 1am tomorrow morning, and move northeast up the country. bringing storms mainly to South East/South and East Anglia..

Secondly, an approaching cold front from the Atlantic will then hit the whole of the UK. To give you some rough timings, it will be half way up the country (again heading north east) by approx 3pm tomorrow. Ahead of this cold front there will be the worst of the severe weather, possibly increasing in intensity as it moves up the country so the main areas for sever weather are expected to be East Mids/Northampton/Lincolnshire tomorrow afternoon/evening

However - just about anywhere could get a home grown storm or be in the path of these fronts moving in. IOf you are, there could be torrential rain and flash flooding.

If anyone wants to track the storms then try the live lightning map

STORM DO'S AND DONT'S

LIGHTNING
  • Do unplug any devices that are attached to phone lines or TV aerials.
  • Don't take a shower or bath , keep away from internal pipe work.
  • Do stay away from windows that are metal , this includes upvc as they have metal inside.
  • Don't stand under trees.
  • Do get in your car if you're stuck in the open .
  • Don't use an umbrella or play golf.
HAIL
  • Do get indoors if hail is large
  • Do ensure animals/items of value are protected from exposure
  • If you;re driving, be prepared for icy conditions on the roads and DO SLOW DOWN.
FLOODING
This is not about river flooding but about flash flooding of small streams/brooks and surface water flooding when water pours off hills/roads/driveways and accumulates at the lowest point because ti can't drain away fast enough
  • Do ensure all animals are removed from any risk and/or have access to higher ground
  • Don't risk driving through flood water.
WINDS
Some of the storms may be accompanied by strong gusty winds as the fronts and storm lines move through.
  • Do ensure light items within your garden are tied down/secured
FINALLY
  • Do prepare for power loss
  • Enjoy mother nature at it's most exciting!.

I have been starting to get worried since yesterday about this flood lark. I'm right in the middle of it all, so far at my end just a bit of drizzle, reasonably calm winds.

I just hope the power don't go this evening when BGT is on! We may have to bring the pigs in for the evening to be on the safe side.

Hertfordshire: drizzling here but very humid! Trying to keep the pigs cool!

And RELAX everyone! The severe weather event has now passed ( - it's way up the country.l) Some of you will have had strong thunderstroms/rain etc but some will have wondered what all the fuss was about (me included - we got absolutely NOTHING here in Sussex!)

Overnight, you may get the odd localised and self-generated "standard summer" thunderstorrm.........but hopefully nothing to worry about.

Next event brewing is for another storm system on monday/tuesday.

Well its been very very heavy rain with the odd bit of hail here since about 3 p.m. and it doesn't look like it's going to let up any time soon...x

We had heavy rain, my garden is flooded as well as some of the local roads but nothing major. My tribe were all snug in their hutches in the shed. ;)

Yesterday we didn't get that bad weather, did rain for an hour quite heavy, but not enough to flood, then calmed down. Late afternoon brightened up. Not as bad as I thought.

For future reference - there's very little danger in taking a bath or having a shower during a thunder storm. The danger lies in touching a conductor at the point of lighting strike, so if you're enjoying a bath and you suddenly see a flash of lightning, don't rush to get out! If you're really worried just avoid touching the metal taps or plugs.

That's me frazzled then, I have an old fashioned metal bath! :lol!:

Fortunately not - dirty ticket! :)) it's a cast iron bath plumbed in upstairs in the bathroom. ;)

Thank you, but luckily we are on top of a very high hill, no chance of floods!

we have had thunder storms and my animals get a bit scared but ok now!
