Does anyone know how much a consultation costs at Vets4pets? I took Ella there yesterday for her eye and it cost considerably more than what my own vet charges. The cost doesn’t matter as Ella got the treatment she needed but I was kind of baffled. Could they have charged me more as it was a bank holiday or are they generally expensive? I did get a receipt but I wasn’t itemised and I already felt cheeky going there without querying the cost

We pay around £40 for a consultation at the moment. I use one V4P for the piggies and a different one for the cat. They've both put their prices up in the last few months.

I don't think they charge more for a BH, unless you've gone for out of hours emergency. But they are all franchised so they'll all have slightly different prices and policies.

My last hay poke with Cat metacam (tiny bottle) and AB’s cost £103.00 in total if that helps, my local vet but not Vets4Pets

I believe it’s £40 for a consultation, but I haven’t taken the piggies there in a while so it potentially could have gone up. If there’s an exotic vet at the practice that you saw, it could be a lot more expensive. I’m not sure if a bank holiday is classed as out of hours, you could call and query it. I am fairly certain though that a consult was £40 a year or so ago

Thank you. Ella’s bill came to £138 and she came home with a tiny bottle of cat metacam, antibiotic eye drops and corneal repair gel so I guess the price was about right as medication is between £20-£30 a bottle but like I say, she got the treatment needed so that was the main thing x

It was probably the medication… likely the repair gel, I remember our first hay poke our vet said I can give you eye drops and another gel and the latter was expensive (from what the vet said). Our last hay poke was about £57 but that was just an appointment and antibiotic drops (not v4p).

Vets 4 Pets charge no more for what other vets would call "Out of Hours" as in Saturdays and Bank Holidays so I suppose that is why they are more expensive. My local Vets 4 Pets is now no longer open on a Sunday.

The Vets4pets around me no longer open on Sundays either which is a shame. Thankfully my vets are open from 10 till 12 for emergencies on Sundays but if anything should happen after that time it would be the emergency vet which I read on a sign at the vets yesterday charge £199 just to be seen 😞

It depends on the branch as well. Last time I used one inside a pets at home it was on the recommendation of my usual vets 4 pets as they had an exotics specialist. I'm sure the consultation alone was pretty much £60

My vet now charges £48 for a consultation.
Medication, treatment soon push the price way up.
I was chatting to my vet last time I was in about costs.
Their costs have soared so they get passed on.
Larger groups like V4P or CVS probably charge more than small independent vets.

The sad thing is that high prices could mean people are less able to afford vet treatment and could be put off going beyond basic treatment.

My vets also charge £48 for a consultation and the prices for treatment keep rising. It is sad that high prices could mean people are less able to afford vet treatment and could be put off going to the vet 😞

I use Vets for Pets and it’s £40 for a normal consultation. I think I paid £28 for a 32ml bottle of dog metacam. The consultation was significantly more than another local vet (a few years back when I was still working out where to go) but in our case we have a very good small animal specialist who bought the franchise because of his passion for treating rabbits primarily and Guinea pigs and his opportunity to make their in store lives better. I will pay for his expertise, when I have seen a different vet they always go and get his opinion. I didn’t even have to ask about dog metacam, it was the first line which I was very pleased about.

If they charge extra for a bank holiday appointment, it makes sense why it was so expensive. Like I say, it doesn’t matter as Ella got the treatment that she needed but I just wondered as the same treatment for both Ella and Esme who had eye injuries at the same time cost me around £100 at my own vet a few months ago

My Vets4Pets said that if you weren't one of their regular clients, they charge you an emergency fee if you go what would usually be considered "out of hours".

That makes sense then as although I'm registered with them, I’m not a regular client and I guess a bank holiday would be classed as out of hours?

Have you phoned them to ask for a breakdown? You’ll know for sure then. It makes sense for them to charge extra for bank holidays, as the staff will probably be paid a premium rate.
No I haven’t as I felt cheeky going in the first place as I’m not a regular client. I haven’t been since Austin and Morris had to have their kitten jabs which cats protection paid for in 2019 so didn’t want to query the cost on top x

You were incredibly lucky that you were able to get her seen by them. Your practice would have designated out of hours cover, which I am sure would’ve been very much more expensive! xx
Yes, my vets aren’t open on bank holidays and their emergency cover charges £199 just for a consultation. I’m very grateful that pets4vets fitted her in and I’ve registered Elizabeth and Esme there should we need to use them again. Ella has a follow up appointment with them next Tuesday x
