Vets

Personally, if you’ve got the time, I’d syringe feed her, throughout the day and get her strength back up and then get her to Cat and Rabbit on Monday. I’m horrified they haven’t syringe fed her since Wednesday. Simon and Kim would dose at around 0.4 - 0.5 ml loxicom twice daily, for a guinea pig of that weight.

Thank you Debbie, i rang them this morning, my husband has just rang them, they are getting a vet to call us back. We thought it was a really small dose.

I’m so sorry to hear the vets haven’t fed her. Keep an eye on her weight daily and keep us posted, I hope she is ok

So sorry poor Abigale is not doing so well. I would keep at home and syringe feed her, at least you know how much she is getting then. I suppose a nurse can’t sit there all day and actually watch what they eat but you would think they would give a certain amount of syringe food throughout the day. Sending you all hugs and hope you can get an appointment with Simon or Kim on Monday, ring at 8.00 am 🤞
I think they have miscalculated that Loxicom totally too, I would give her 0.4ml - 0.5 ml twice as day, that’s what Ted’s dosage was when he was 1100 gms in his last year

Debbie, would that be 0.4-0.5 ml of DOG loxicom twice daily? Thank you

Thank you @Bill & Ted, was that DOG loxicom?

Thank you everyone for you support and help. The Vet has just called us back and said yes to up Abigail's loxicom. I will keep on Syringe feeding, hopefully she will start to feel better. Its heartbreaking to see Abigail so poorly, she is normally so strong and bossy.
Thank you also for the wonderful knowledge you all have, it gave me the confidence to phone the vets and question her meds. The vet who phoned back was really.
nice. Thank you xx

I’m sure she will feel more comfortable with that does. Sending big hugs to you both and healing vibes for Abigail x

So sorry to hear Abigail isn't doing well. The treatment she got is very dissapointing and not at all what I would have expected given the amount of times I've been there with Eddie! Do you know which vet you had?

I don't think she had bad care, i'm pretty sure Abigail would not be here if they hadn't taken her in and dispersed her bloat. They changed her pain medication on the Friday we picked her up and didn't prescribed a strong enough dose, which has now been upped. When they said she was very bright and eating and doing poos, i thought that she would be nearly back to normal ( i've never had a piggy with bloat before and maybe that shows my inexperience) when we got her home she was very unsteady on her feet and would not take food apart from a sprig of coriander and is still only doing very small long thread type poos. She is still not eating, i am syringe feeding her (i'm not that good at it, but am trying my best) I am just grateful that she is still here. The Vets have said we could take her back at anytime. I am certainly not complaining about the treatment that Abigail got, but just unsure where to go from here. I will be contacting the vets in the morning. Thank you @Eddie & Elvis for your help and support x

She should not have been discharged in such a wobbly state and not eating, without you being warned about this. I've dealt with bloat a number of times and you continue to syringe feed until they are eating well for themselves, or you risk them becoming gassy again.

It's great that they got her through the bloat but I wouldn't have expected them to send her home in such a wobbly state. You're doing a great job looking after her :) I have no personal experience with bloat so I can't give any useful advice but I continue to offer my support x

Is she less wobbly today? I have a syringe feeding video on the TEAS board, which might help.

Today's instructional video on our Facebook page - Syringe feeding | The Guinea Pig Forum
Thank you Debbie, Abigail was only a bit wobbly on the first night, They said she was eating really well at the vets, she might have became more gassy the afternoon we picked her up, but she wouldn't eat for me, tried everything so continuing to syringe feed. Watched your video with Zoltan, you make it look so easy, Abigail does not behave like that, she holds the food in her mouth then dribbles it out, i am getting some in but we both wear a lot along the way. Thank you for your help.

When they aren’t taking syringe food well, I give 1 ml and then leave 5 mins and then give another. I keep a tally chart, so I can see how much they’ve had. When dealing with a piggy with bloat, I try and keep them moving around, as it helps shift the gas. I therefore give 1 ml, then pop them on floor and encourage them to move snout and then give another ml and back on floor again. It really seems to get things moving.

Eddie did a similar thing when I had to syringe feed him recently. He would not cooperate so it was difficult to get the syringe in his mouth in the first place. Once it was in I could only get it around 0.3ml before it would start dribbling out of his mouth because he was holding it there or he would push the syringe back out of his mouth. We both ended up wearing it too 😂 It's very difficult but anything you're getting into Abigail is keeping her going while she recovers. Keep persevering :)

Thank you Debbie will try to give Abi a break between syringe feeding her. I am also going to try nuggets instead of Oxbow critical care.

I find nuggets are much better accepted and the little and often approach seems to really get things moving. Also giving a few mls of syringe food and then offering a handful of grass often goes down well x

Have you tried Emeraid Sustain? This is the only critical care that Ted actually liked, he hated all the others.
