Vet suggesting pellets are dangerous?

Bumble seems largely back to normal. Thank you to everyone for your help, kind words and suggestions. We've discovered that she was injected with .5ml Vetergesic which explains the state she was in. The vet also said that was a half dose to avoid sedation, so would have given 1ml quite possibly. We've registered our pigs with Ellie/The Guinea Pig Vet instead and we're making formal complaints through every channel we can. We honestly thought we'd lost Bumble because of the state she was in. I genuinely don't understand why a simple check up went as badly as that did..... She went in happy, pain free and healthy. She came out two hours later soaked, stinking of chemicals, catatonic, unable to move, eat or drink, feeling swollen and cold. Thank goodness she's back to normal.

The most ive ever been given (of emeprid) was up to 1ml every 8 hours, so 3 times a day. But that was for some pretty severe stasis and an intestinal adhesion after a surgery while also being given alongside a second motility medication. 4 times seems quite excessive, well done for making a formal complaint, you will probably save the life of a guinea pig down the line if she isnt able to do this to someone else's pet! Glad your piggy is on the mend, what a nightmare.

It is excessive, everything the vet did was wrong and in excess. I'm not giving her 1ml, 4 times a day. I don't trust this vet. I obviously would never suggest other people stop following their vet's advice but she's clearly getting her decimals wrong and will end up killing an animal. Bumble does not have, and did not have, bloat. I only took her in for a check up because the day previously she'd done a few poops smaller than normal. The day of her appointment she was fine and her poop normal. She should not have left there sedated and full of unnecessary medications. Ordinarily we'd have gone in with her but COVID restrictions prevented us.

Just catching up with your post. So sad this has happened. Hope your poor piggie is ok now. And good for you making a complaint. She obviously doesn't know about guinea pigs.

Thank you. We asked her why she had taken Bumble from us for 2 hours (for a check up) and she said she'd been researching what to do. Absolutely terrifying. Apparently Bumble had been given an Ultrasound without our knowledge or consent which I suspect is the real reason for the unnecessary sedation. This sounds like some kind of mad sitcom story....

My snoopy had an ultrasound at the vets to look for stones. But he wasnt sedated.

With a different vet a necessary ultrasound hadn't used sedation either and I honestly don't know why this particular vet accepted Bumble as a patient. It was really unusual. Last time an ultrasound was required their belly was shaved but Bumble was simply returned to us absolutely stinking of chemicals and sticky.

Not informing you first of what they were planning to do was just so wrong. Consent from you must be asked first. :rtm:

One exotic vet that we trust had to phone us and ask us first on what we wanted her to do even in the middle of a major exploratory operation. She called us and informed us what she discovered and ask us if we wanted for her to continue. That is on top of telling her beforehand that we give her consent in everything they think was best to do.

Agreed. We're taking it to every possible governing veterinary organisation. We're approaching the parent company too and anything else official we can find. We have the bottle prescriptions of Emeprid stating 1ml, 4 times a day with her name on it. We have the syringe she used which contains exactly .5ml Vetergesic; she withdrew the entire contents of a 1ml amp and injected Bumble with a full .5ml despite her prescription of 0.03ml and said that was half a dose. We have a picture of Bumble drooling with her eyes bulging and a video of her being catatonic. We're hoping conversations are recorded so we have proof she admitted having to research what to do, her snide comments about people on here AND she needs to answer why she detained Bumble for 2 hours.
