Hello, I am new to the forum so hope I’m doing this right. I have had my almost 18 week old guinea pigs for over 5 weeks now. We went to the vets Tuesday due to increased sneezing, squeaky sound from nose (it was not vocalisation) and rather smelly poop which I decided to get tested for parasites and infection. I work in a vet practice myself so have a fair amount of knowledge on Guinea pigs. Due to the pandemic vet practices are limited. And the vet I would have preferred to see isn’t working at the moment. This vet checked them over and prescribed Baytril to be on the safe side. I asked if we needed a probiotic, he said only is they react to the antibiotic. We started the medication Tuesday evening, it’s currently Thursday afternoon and one of the piggies who happens to be the heaviest so has the biggest dose has been reacting quite badly to it. Straight away we took them all off the antibiotics and have been monitoring closely. she is naturally a quiet piggie and fussy with her food. However, she is being fussier than usual (due to the Baytril) and the poops have been slightly abnormal (a little bit squishy aswell as some smaller ones) which the vet has seen pictures of. She pooped a good few normal ones after having a snuggle with me.
what my main query here, is syringe feeding. She’s eating hay on and off but I wanted to feed some critical care I had in my cupboard , only to find the best before was January 2020, is this safe to use or not? If not what can I do urgently instead, Will soaking some pellets and syringe feeding some of that help her at all? I’m ordering some benebac to come ASAP as I know Baytril can upset their gut bacteria.
does anyone else have any experience with this, I love them all so much and I’m terrified I’m going to loose her.
appreciate any answers.
