hi, I wasn't sure where to post this so I've put it here. I've just noticed on the pigs hay there are 1000s of tiny white lice like creatures. They have infested the hay and are all over the cage. Does anyone know what they are and if the hay is safe to eat as I have no other bags. Thankyou.

How horrible! :vom: Not has experience of this but I'm sure someone will be along soon. If it were me though I wouldn't risk the hay and piggies eating it.

I've been cleaning the cage but I'm struggling to get rid of them all. The pigs have been eating the hay all day do you think they will be okay?

Have you tried boiling water to kill them off? I don't think they'll be too many alive after that.

You could always phone your vet about your piggies in the morning.

We are currently using clean and safe to try and get rid of them all then we will Hoover them up. We will get more hay in the morning but I'm worried about the pigs going all night with no hay

Hi! Please throw everything out and deep clean the cage. I would strongly recommend to not feed infested hay. They will survive until tomorrow without any if you give them a large bowl full of pellets as a one-off emergency and try to get hold of some hay tomorrow as soon as you can, whether that is from a local pet shop or supermarket.

Please make sure that you deep clean the cage.

omg. what a shock. throw all hay away or put into a bag tie tie up and return to shop with a very angry face. Clean Hoover until everyone of the bugs are gone. Check the piggies as they could be on the fur. this is horrible not your fault and well spotted. like wiebke said pls pls clean everything. . give lots water and pellets plus few veg treats and seek advise asap off vets. You poor people. hopefully all be ok. xx

Make sure you don't accidentally contaminate the new hay (if you have room you may wish to keep it in the freezer (as that kills the bugs). It reminds me of a bad rental flat we had and ended up with psosids.

Is the Tesco meadow hay bedding okay for the pigs to eat for tonight until we can get to pets at home in the morning?

I've been looking on the net and most the hay critters are non blood eating. but I'd keep a eye on piggies and try vets for info. x

Thankyou everyone! So today I have a bit of a new problem. Darcy hasn't pooed since we swapped their hay to the Tesco one last night. She's acting normal but unfortunately I can't monitor her throughout the day as I'm at work. I've asked my mum to go up and check and she's going to take a bag of their normal hay up for me. If she's still not when I get home we will do straightvto the vets,

morning. try not to worrie too much. Is Darcey up and active. Keep watch. hopefully someone better than I will give you advise.

I was wondering that too David. You just got in there before me!

Well they do say "great minds think alike" but then also "fools never differ"! :lol!::lol!:
