Upper Respiratory Tract Infection

Keeping everything crossed for her. It may be that she needs diuretic if her breathing is laboured.
 
The diagnosis was pneumonia again. They gave her 3 injections which totally stressed her our. Diuretic bay tril and metacam. Don't think it was a piggy knowledgeable vet xx
 
Really hope the medication helps. Diuretic and a good antibiotic are key with pneumonia. Have you been given any medication to come home with?
 
A further update and thank you for responses. I wasn't given any meds to go home with but have metacam as a stand by. I took her to regular vet the next day and she was completely back to normal. The vet could here no noise at all from her lungs. She thought that her lungs are highly sensitised now due to previous infection and things will trigger the difficulty with breathing. She just said to give metacam if it happens again. Since then she has been eating fine and is quite bright. However I've just had her out of her cage running round the dining room and afterwards she was making a squeaky sort of noise - not the usual piggy noise. So it's a bit suspicious. ? Like a type of asthma attack xx
 
No it was a quiet squeaky noise but not a usual piggy squeak. If it happens again I'm going to try and video as then vet will know exactly what I'm talking about.
 
Help. Binky is having another wheezing attack. I've given her metacam. She's struggling to breathe. What else can I do?
 
Call the emergency vet, has she ever had diuretics? did the vet say she had any fluid? I will look back through the thread now but if she is struggling to breathe she needs the vet.
 
Ok just seen she had diuretic, I think she may need it again and oral medication to use at home too. She may need a different antibiotic too.

Steam therapy may help too.
 
I think it is like asthma. I took her to emergency vet last time and they were not really much use. Binky was back to normal the next day. I have given her some piriton and put olbas oil on tissue in her cage. She is breathing better now but still noisy. I have managed to video the attack so will be sble to show vet . Thanks for replies x
 
I wonder if a nebuliser would help. Would be worth asking the vet. Apparently Maplin sell a good one.
 
OMG I hope she gets better.

So it seems weird to me that you would want to give her steam?!? that would be very humid air (more fluid to breath in) and humid air always makes it harder to breath?!? I know humans use it when we are sick, but we aren't as sensitive to humidity as pigs are. I'm just curious as it would seem counterproductive. Or does steam mean something else in the UK?

Saying prayers for both of you. I wish you were close by I have a nebulizer.

Thanks for replies. Binky is still with us and got over last attack. Anyone any experience of piggies with long term respiratory problems? Not had another attack but she's up and down and just wondering if she's struggling to get enough oxygen?

Steam therapy is very effective and was recommended to me when my Buzz had Pneumonia. It is only used in 5 second bursts and as far as I know does not have the same effect as humid conditions do.
 
nebulising might be a good option alongside the other meds. i found it the one of the best things for my rabbits who both have/had life long respiratory problems. it's a real battle with these type of issues. sometimes getting them stable is a good outcome, as alot of the time a complete recovery from it isn't possible. it's a case of finding a routine that works. x

If he is having recurring URIs then I would be asking the vet to look into a potential heart issue. Can't remember if we have discussed that before? will go back through the thread now.
 
Thanks. I'm going to take her to the vets again tomorrow. She seems lethargic and not eating as much today .
 
Yes I'm thinking could it be her heart. Would she need a scan to definitely diagnose or X-ray?
 
It really depends on how good the vet it is at detecting heart problems by stethoscope alone. An xray is recommended though as they will be able to see if the heart is enlarged or any masking the heart. Some vets are happy to try a 2 week heart med trial too.

Thanks for the reply Helen. Okay 5 seconds makes more sense to me lol. Good to know that this is a good treatment and doesn't have the effect humidity does.
 
I can't believe this little piggy has had so many things and is still fighting. She just recently broke a bone in her foot. The vet put a splint on and took it off after 5 days and I continued her on Metacam. I noticed a little bit of a sore where the splint had been. I tried to wean off metacam over last couple of days and knew that she was in pain still so started it again. On closer exam, the sore is quite large , where her elbow is and is obviously painful. There is a large scab now. I've soaked with diluted hibiscrub and put calendula cream on. Any other ideas to make her more comfy until I can get her to the vets on Monday? Thanks for all the help x
