Update on my guinea pigs for anyone who’s interested

Elizabeth and Ella have just seen the vet. Elizabeth has a slight URI so has baytril for 7 days. Got to bring her back if she worsens or isn’t right again in a few days 😞 Ella has a small scratch on her eye by the grass seed but thankfully no corneal ulcer so again has eye drops and corneal repair gel for 7 days 😞 Can I have a break please?

Thank you. Elizabeth is on 0.25ml of baytril twice a day. Does that sound about right? This is my first time dealing with a URI 😞 she was on 0.25ml last week for her lump so I’m assuming she’s on the correct dosage

I can’t comment more on it, I’ve not used Baytril for a while.
Just really feel for you at the moment! I hope they recover and you get a nice break

I’m feeling really stressed out. Elizabeth has eaten her tea and is acting normal but she sounds crackly 😞 How long should it take for the antibiotics to kick in? I’m also stressed about it spreading to Ella and Esme 😞 sorry, I’ve never dealt with a URI before so don’t know what to expect

When Comet had his respiratory infection it took a day or two for him to stop hooting, and Blitzen never caught anything from him - and you know how those two were, where you found one you'd always find the other.

Thank you, hopefully I’ll see an improvement in a day or two. I’m glad that Blitzen didn’t catch it. Did Comet have baytril?

Yeah. That was when the vet chose to give him an injectable dose too and he had me deaf in one ear from screaming so loudly near my neck, bless him. He tolerated the Baytril itself well, though. I don't remember the dose though, sorry, that was in 2017.

Thank you and that’s ok. Elizabeth has tolerated baytril to on the other occasions she’s had it so hopefully she will this time too

When my boys have had a URI they would get prescribed 0.6ml of Baytril once a day, so .25ml twice a day sounds about right.
My boys weighed around 1100g at the time.

Yes the antibiotic will take a day or two to kick in, like humans. Baytril is often well tolerated and hopefully Elizabeth will be feeling better soon x

I’ve booked Elizabeth an appointment with the vet for Monday morning so she can have her chest listened to and to make sure the URI has gone. By then, she will have been on the antibiotics for 5/6 days. Of course, I’ll take her back sooner if she worsens or cancel the appointment if I’m happy it’s gone. She sounds chesty today

I’m really worried. Elizabeth sounds worse today and I would have thought I’d have seen an improvement by now 😞 Do you think she just needs a longer course of the antibiotics or aren’t they working?

I don’t have any experience of uri. Sorry. Sending you a hug. 🤗. See what the vet says tomorrow. Good luck at the appointment.

I always used to have longer AB courses for Zebedee. Zithromax came in 10 day amounts and he'd finish one lot then at least part of a second. Baytril etc he had at least a week. (We did think his lungs had been damaged by poor care in his first home.)

Hope Elizabeth shows improvement soon 🙏

All I can offer is support

Thank you. She’s only been on the baytril since Wednesday so I guess it’s early days. I keep thinking she’s stopped and then I hear a crackle when she breathes 😞 The vet said it was mild and that we’d caught it really early but this is my first time dealing with a uri in 16 years of piggy ownership. I’ll see what the vet says tomorrow x

Elizabeth has just seen the vet for her URI and it’s not the best news 😞 Vet said that if she had a true URI, they’d expect her to display more symptoms. There ‘could’ be something more sinister going on and that lipoma on her leg and her chest ‘may’ be related 😞 but without doing X-rays and blood work, she doesn’t know. Anyway, she has metacam to take to see if that helps. She’s going back next week. Please keep those healing vibes coming

Thank you. I’m so stressed out as the vet didn’t prescribe anymore antibiotics and we run out on Wednesday but she wants to see how we get on with the metacam. The crackling isn’t coming from her lungs but her upper airways

Have they checked her mouth? We had a piggy who started to display upper respiratory issues, with noisy breathing. Simon checked her mouth, where he found a strange growth, coming from around a tooth, that came away when he examined it. It was sent for histology and was identified as a tooth origin tumour. The reason for the noisy breathing was the tumour was growing into her nasal cavity. I’m not saying that this is what’s happening with Elizabeth but would be worth investigating!
