Unsure of vet advice

Vet is calling today to tell us the outcome of the referral so we can decide, he said he's done a bladder stone removal on a pig in the past and it went well, and hes used anaesthesia on pigs many times, said he recalls very few complications caused by it when he has, but I asked for the referral anyway just to have the choice. If the price isn't completely impossible I'll take the specialist even though the vet does seem pretty confident, hes done it tons on dogs and cats too but of course piggies are very different, it'll also depend on how soon each one can operate. My biggest fears are the stone moving; Oscar completely dropping his food or of course the surgery not working out and he just develops another. I'm just going to miss my 9-5 on Thursday if need be to prioritise syringe feeding, I'm up to date with my projects anyway and it's taking me a long time to do because I have tourettes syndrome and being so stressed makes it worse, I move my arm involuntarily mid feeding, don't worry I'd never hurt him with that, just inconvenient.

Theyre in a 5x3 cage on fleece so in surgery recovery, can I split it with grids to keep them apart but in sight? Or can they stay together the whole time given Wilbur isn't bothering him? Sorry for all the posts, i want to get all the information I can, hard not to feel uncertain.

Good to know; thanks! Managed another 12(ish)ml with my mums help, so grateful she's going to help me with it each time, going to aim for roughly 4 or more feeds a day, the extras if he doesn't take a full 15ml in one sitting like today. Shame but he hates the stuff; he was so eager last night but today fighting over it, must be feeling really bad bless him.

I have only seen him eating little bits of hay and he did take a tomato this morning, think that's how he tricked me into thinking he was eating enough. 60ml will be our goal today then we'll adjust it based on his weight tommorow.

They can stay together the whole time and in fact it is best to keep them together.
They tend to recover better if they remain with their friend because their stress levels are usually less. Plus separating them (even if they can still see each other) can run the risk that they refuse to go back together.
You only separate on medical grounds if it’s absolutely essential.

I’m hope all goes well

Totally agree. I didnt know this, and when one of my original pair had a major dental/abscess surgery, I had them side by side/separated and it caused a lot of distress for the patient's cagemate.

Your boys are beautiful! Best wishes πŸ’–πŸ·πŸ·πŸ’–

Thanks so much for all the support. ❀️

Our current vet could do Wednesday but they're calling on Monday to confirm that's possible, otherwise its next week, we ended up not going with the referral vet because they wanted to do a consultation, then after book a surgery which could be far longer to wait for, we would have paid the price difference but it just felt like the wrong idea all around. So it'll be with our usual one, I feel fairly secure because they have been good so far and have familiarity with the surgery with mostly good outcomes in the past. Oscar's deteriorated overnight and won't eat much at all, mostly just hides, so I felt it was best to get this done sooner, not later or he might not have made it to surgery at all. The less time he's in pain the better no matter what. Until then it'll be critical care and giving him lots of love.πŸ’•

I need help, woken up this morning and hes barely moving, there's this red, kind of see through lump coming out of his bottom.

He has gained 40grams overnight but he's in so much pain.

Our vets don't open until 9am

As you are in the UK you have access to a vet 24/7 via out of hours/emergency cover.
Please call your normal vet practice phone number and their answer phone will give you details of who covers them for out of hours emergencies.
Call that number and they will tell you what to do - I suspect they will want you to take him to them.

I hope he is ok

I'll do that

Don't think it'll be good news, tried his critical care and he's not bothering to swallow, feel so guilty but I just can't keep trying with it, he'd choke. Mum's calling the out of hours at the moment. Got him in a towel cuddled up, Wilbur was ignoring him in the cage.

Out out of hour vets say they're closed? I don't know what's going on with that, can't get through anywhere.

That can’t be right ….
Try looking on your vets website if they have one and see if that gives any other info or any other practise which covers them

Good luck. You are doing all you can for him. I hope he’s ok 🀞🏻

Out of hours has no exotic vets, they suggested we call ashleigh vets as an emergency at 8:30, really hope he can get in because they've always been too busy in the past

Ashleigh Vets have their own out of hours. It is for registered clients but they might see you 07548194997

If not, their cover is Vets Now if you’ve not already tried them 01612226101

Got it.

Cant believe how skinny hes got and how I didn't notice. He was definitely over 1000 grams before all of this, now he's practically skin and bone at 670 grams, we only noticed hed dropped because of Wilbur being heavier, he was 622 yesterday but we got 70ml of cc yesterday into him. I was so sure he was eating and his fluff hid it, I wish I'd noticed in time.

Unfortunately they can drop a lot of weight very quickly as soon as their hay intake reduces hence the need for daily weight checks when they are unwell.

Have you been able to find a vet to see him?

Ashleigh have no exotics in but have agreed to have a nurse see him at 10:30 so were leaving now, there's no other option other than leaving him to suffer. We're taking Wilbur too because it's looking like this will be goodbye even if we saw our usual vet and I know he needs to see it.

Oh no I'm so sorry! Poor boy and poor you 😒
My thoughts and prayers are with you today. You are doing the right thing to prevent any more suffering ❀️

We've decided to put him to sleep. The vet was lovely, she has guinea pigs herself, and told us the options.

It looks like he had a prolapse from straining and the complication would have been too much for him at his weight in surgery. I'm a wreck but I'm not going to consider options for wilbur until I'm clear headed, my knee jerk reaction is to rehome him but doubt I'll want that in the end. Ozzy was just quiet and in too much pain, I feel so guilty he dropped so much weight, it happened so quickly. But at least he won't be in pain anymore.

I’m so sorry. Popcorn pain free over the bridge gorgeous Ozzy. ❀Take care x

Sorry for your loss, sending you a virtual hug.

We recently lost one of one of our piggies after an operation to remove a stone was a success, but unfortunately he got another stone soon after. 🌈
