Tumour in bladder

I've just read the thread as I recently lost a piggie after him not recovering from a second bladder stone removal op. What absolutely wonderful news ❤️ our vet was initially concerned it could be cancer on the first op because he took a part of the bladder wall for testing. It turned out to be a polyp so nothing major, but he said that there have been recent results with Loxicom (metcam equivalent) in treating cancer, and with tumours actually reducing in size. Not sure over what timescale though. I've never had a piggie with cancer myself so can't really comment on your little one, but just thought you might find the story interesting.

Someone mentioned adhesion to other organs too - during the second surgery, our vet said that as Desmond's bladder had healed from the first one, it had quite badly stuck to the adominal wall and gut. This was part of the reason Desmond was in pain whilst pooing as well as urinating. As others have said, it's a very packed in area with a lot of vital organs. Our vets comment following the 2nd surgery was that there is no way he should be put through a 3rd surgery if stones were to return, because of the adhesion issues. Sadly, he didn't recover from the 2nd surgery, passing within 24 hours.

1st op was June 23rd and the second one was Aug 24th with him passing on Aug 25th, so it's up to date info from the vet.

Thank the piggie gods that your little one is improving 🙏 I'm sure every day you spend with him will be all the more special.

Update - 5/9/23

Lando is doing really well, eating better, still fighting his corner when his brother pesters him & peeing and pooping without crying now.

Lando had an ultrasound scan today as planned & booked.

The suspected tumour has gone!

We couldn’t believe our ears, whatever the obstruction was in his bladder has significantly disappeared & is no longer hanging in there.

We asked the vet if he’s sure it was a tumour and he said he’s not 100% but judging by the placement and shape that it had to have been a tumour.

He’s got to continue on Rheumacam & go back every 3 months to check on his bladder.

The vet did say he’s had cases like this in dogs where a tumour has gone but come back years later with a vengeance so we need to keep that in mind.

I’ve attached his previous scan (the original diagnosis from this was a suspected tumour) & also the scan result from today.

Does anyone else have the same thoughts as me? I’m thinking this wasn’t a tumour after all, surely it wouldn’t have disappeared that quickly in a week?

I’ll also add that Lando was on Trimexazole and gut stimulants over the course of time up til today.

Bless you. Sending hugs. Losing a guinea pig is so hard & often doesn’t get understood as well as those that have dogs and cats etc. I know how hard it is so my thoughts are with you.

Lando had only been on the meloxaid for a week & the tumour has gone over the course of that time. We’re all pretty convinced it was some sort of abscess or cyst due to the fact he was on antibiotics & we’re thinking that cleared it rather than it being a tumour.

Here’s our little fighter x

I bet you are relieved. I've an exotic vet ,that performed a nephrectomy, due to a stone that was stuck there. He had a good kidney left.
My guinea pig went on to live 18 months more at the age of 6 he passed.so with an experienced vet it can be done.my vet is always brutally honest.

Thanks for your comment. I am, it’s amazing to know he no longer has it.

We don’t think Lando will need surgery now, he’s on long term pain relief to reduce inflammation of what’s left & will continue on that for the rest of his life

Thank you ❤️ aww bless him! What a handsome little devil :luv: 😃 similar colouring to our Desmond although more light brown... see picture 😊

Terrence is with the white nose, still with us! And the second photo is his new mate - hyperactive, 12 week old Patch 😅

You are right... people don't really get it with guinea pigs. I had them growing up, and but my husband Christian had never had them before. He was so surprised at their large personalities and how interactive they are, for their little size! He had dogs and cats growing up, but is a converted piggie lover now! We're both devastated about Desmond, just so pleased to have Terrence still, and now with Patch too. Terrence is back to him usual self and Patch is settling down a bit now.

Makes sense that it's more likely it was an abscess or cyst with your boy, it would be weird for a tumour to go that quickly. Thank goodness ❤️ fingers crossed it stays this way!
