Treating open sores

Our vet has given us this creme to put on our parasite infected piggies back, but I was wondeirng if it's okay to put on an open wound? She didn't sya not to...

What cream is it? Out vet gives us F10 cream for open wounds. Looks a little like vasaline

ok, the cream is called cortanmycetine - i guess it's a cortizone? I also did wonder if it would be OK to smear some vaseline on him too, to soothe his skin

No to the vaseline, it only serves to smother the skin - traps in any bacteria, fungal spores etc - and could lead to worse problems.

Cortanmycetine, looks like it might contain an antibiotic and steroid, but I don't trust what info I have found on it. Does the tube list the active ingredients?

Ingredients:
Prednisolone
Excipinet

and very small amounts of chloramphenicol and something else that's written in French (nitrate phénylmercurique)

Ok, no vaseline.

We put some on him and he looks really relaxed and is making noises, could be happy or could be a little irate, not sure.

Prednisolone is an anti-inflammatory steroid.
Excipinet - no idea!
Chloramphenicol is an antibiotic.
Phenylmercuric nitrate seems to be an antiseptic, possibly (?) also antibacterial.

Would I use it on open sores....personally, it is unlikely because it seems very strong, and because I've never heard of two of the ingredients. Research showed info about the Phenylmercuric nitrate, but nothing for Excipinet.

is there something mild and that I could perhaps find in the pharmacy you could suggest to soothe his skin, and heal the wounds if you don't advise the cream from the vet?

At the moment, Aloe Vera gel/ointment is the only thing I personally feel comfortable putting on open wounds, and in some cases I have not applied anything to skin wounds. But it has to be said that I've not dealt with severe cases where the pig is continually scratching at the skin and opening wounds, whether Aloe Vera would work for this I have no idea.
