Tofu and Patches!

Ah Sherlock Bones is beautiful ….that innocent face ….he can’t ever be naughty 😂
We are all supporting you both and lovely Patches
Will be thinking of you all tomorrow 🥰

They are really gorgeous together - a match meant to be I think!

Aw don’t worry at all honestly, Amy told me which balm so I got some in for him ☺️ he is such a delight, and they’re both so much happier now they have company and can snuggle up together

They shared a paper bag this morning 😍 I was spot cleaning and Patches was a bit spooked by the dustpan, so he sought refuge in the same hay pile as Tofu. Tofu didn’t kick him out for once! So they were cuddled up together while I cleaned around them haha

Tofu is in here too I promise!

Tofu hasn’t yet taught Patches his nasty habit of munching on the plastic bin bag. I hope it stays that way 😂

And here they are enjoying the rest of breakfast. Patches has well and truly made himself at home

So cute!

Patches has been dropped off at the specialist vet for a whole bunch of testing. We’ll see what they show but the vet already had a few ideas for what could be going on - I think we’ll get answers and a plan today regardless

Tofu is with him for support. We can go pick them up in a few hours once the tests have all been done and we’ll have a more in depth chat then. Thank you for all the well wishes, the support really means a lot 😊

I’m afraid I don’t have good news

The vet was excellent and clearly knew what he was talking about but it wasn’t good. Repeat x rays showed several bladder stones and blood tests showed Patches was in kidney failure. He also had a heart murmur and his body was starting to shut down, which is why he’d been losing so much weight

The x rays also revealed several deformities in his hips and legs - probably from the neglect before he was rescued. There’s a possibility he’d broken some bones before and he was riddled with arthritis

Ultimately there wasn’t anything treatable - one of the issues on their own might have been worth it, but all together he was in a lot of pain and wouldn’t have made it through any sort of intensive treatment. So on the vet’s advice we made the heartbreaking decision to put him to sleep

I’m devastated but also glad he isn’t suffering anymore

I'm so sorry. I think we all know that you made the hardest decision out of love. He got to experience a loving home and good care before leaving for the rainbow bridge ❤️ 🌈

No, no, no 😥
I am so sorry for your loss I am heartbroken myself I'm sending you all lots of love.
Popcorn happily you wonderful boy take all the love with you and watch over those you've left behind. I hope you have found Tweed over The Rainbow Bridge 🌈

It was absolutely heartbreaking seeing the x rays, there was just so much going on with him. I did ask the vet if putting him through the mammary tumour removal made everything worse but he said this would have happened anyway in another month or so, just potentially the operation meant he didn’t have the resources to fight everything else anymore

The vet also thought Patches was closer to 3-4 years old. At least he was rescued and looked after well by @ CTWC fostering him, and then he had a great bond with Tofu here with us for his last few months. It’s just so sad there was nothing more we could do

I knew he wasn’t right though. He’d been quiet and subdued all month, putting him through any more treatment just wouldn’t have been fair to him as much as I wish we could have had him for longer

😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
I am so very sorry to read this devastating news.
It brought tears to my eyes.
After a rough start in life you gave Patches a wonderful life.
Be gentle with yourselves as you grieve.
Holding you all in my heart ♥️

Thank you all so much. The support here really makes all the difference

Tofu came home and climbed straight into the spot Patches was last ❤️

We got to spend some time with them both before we said goodbye to Patches. Their bond really was special, they cared for each other so much. I’m glad they got to know each other

I'm so sorry you lost Patches. :( 💔 It's really heartbreaking when they have multiple health issues and we can't fix it all. But I'm sure he was thankful you were his mummy till the end and he was with his friend. Big hugs to you.❤️

Popcorn free Patches. You will be missed dearly. ❤️🌈

Thank you <3 I'm comforted knowing he's no longer in pain at least. I'm sure he's popcorning with Tweed and Noodle, all having a good gossip

I keep going over what the vet found yesterday. There was a bladder stone in the original x rays that my local vet missed, it was in an awkward spot behind his leg so hard to see, and in the couple of weeks since then there were another four stones that all appeared in a row. The vet suspected at least one was in the urethra. They were the type that would have kept recurring. If there was just one, and he didn't have the other problems in his legs and heart, it might have been worth trying to remove it and hoping they didn't come back too fast

But he was in kidney failure too and one kidney had stopped working entirely. His blood tests were all wonky and the vet said just looking at him that he wasn't a well piggie. I have peace that it was the right decision, I just wish there was another answer

Giving Tofu lots of cuddles and treats. He's doing okay so far, I'm sure he knew before me what was going on so he's had time to process. It feels so wrong only having one piggie in the cage

Your lives (&@CTWC) were made richer for having that little fella in them
Guinea pigs open us to all sorts of joys, fun, laughter and love and we’re so much better for having them
In time the sorrow and sadness will fade and you will remember the sweet lovely boy he was and all those amazing memories
As owners we do have to make the difficult decisions sometimes …. we understand and support you 🥰
Take care of yourselves as you grieve
I’m sure Patches is catching up on all the gossip with Noodle and Tweed ❤️❤️❤️

Oh goodness no I'm so sorry, I know you've emailed Amy this morning to let her know 😞
Poor Patches aka Sidney - a truly special boy he was a big softie, the most gentle kind boy.
His horrific past has caught up with him, but I'm so glad he had those months with us at Merrypigs, then a fantastic time with our amazing fosterers @CTWC and of course with you and Tofu in his new forever home. Honestly it makes me so angry the way we found them, and the state they were in.
We used to call him the "gypsy king"
RIP sweet Patches/Sidney... over the Rainbow Bridge with Tweed and Noodle - Tweed loved you so much, he'll be happy to see you 🌈❤️

Just going to dump some of my favourite pictures of Patches here. I’ve been looking through them and smiling because he was the silliest, gentlest boy who brought out the fun in all of us

Making progress on sorting out a friend for Tofu. Will report back when we have news, maybe in a new thread, hopefully in the next week or two. Tofu’s weight is okay but he’s sad, sleeping in Patches’ favourite tunnel ❤️

Here are my favourite Patches pictures to close out this chapter

Kisses with Tofu - Tofu used to chatter at us when we picked Patches up for meds. He’s a protective uncle

IMG_6111.webp IMG_1030.webp

He loved treating the little hurdle in the middle of their cage like Pride Rock and displaying himself proudly - he also napped like that a lot!

IMG_0174.webp

Shocked and appalled that he had to have foot soaks

IMG_6954.webp IMG_1366.webp IMG_6993.webp

In his happy place surrounded by hay

IMG_1736.webp

He took to nibbling my top gently when he was done with syringe feed and wanted to go home

IMG_1217.webp IMG_6608.webp

And his true favourites - a squishy tunnel, and a cuddle surrounded by veggies

Lovely photos and lovely memories 🥰
Take comfort that you gave him ( and the rescue and @CTWC ) the best life he could have wished for ❤️
