Toast's Making A Strange Sound

I phoned the vets yesterday afternoon to speak to someone regarding an xray for Toast, they said they'd get a vet to phone me when they were free. No one phoned back that day. I phoned this morning to see if I could catch my vet to quickly run it by him, he was busy so they said he'd phone around 11. No one phoned so I phoned just now to say I don't mean to be annoying but I'd like to get an xray booked and no one's phoning me back.. they said they'd get a vet to phone me before they close at 12 this afternoon...

I don't want to keep annoying them but I just want to speak to the vet for 2 minutes to get the xray arranged. They're closed on Sundays so it'll need to wait until Monday to phone again meaning I won't get an appointment until Wednesday..

Am I being too pushy asking for my vet to speak to me for a few minutes to get this arranged? I know they're really busy but this is important too.. :hmm:

They are busy but you shouldnt have been forgotten about that many times. I call and ask for a telephone consult if i want to speak to the vet about something that doesnt need me to take them in, and they always call back at that day.. If its 10am or 7pm, they still dont forget. Your best bet is probably to make an appointment on monday, take her in and tell the vet then. They may even pop her down the back and take the xray there and then- this is what usually happens at my practice but i understand everywhere is different. X

Ring them & ask them to book an appointment with him for an x ray next week anyway, so you can be sure you can get in. If on the day he decides it's not necessary or he wants to rearrange then that will be up to them to sort out, as long as you can get Toast in, that's all that matters, that way whether he can speak to you before or not at least you know you can get the appointment x

I did think about making an appointment but surely I shouldn't have to pay £25 for a consultation just to ask for an xray?.. I've already had 2 consultations about this breathing issue so I don't need her looked at again, just straight to an xray now...

I wanted to speak to the vet first so A) they didn't think I was just going over their head and booking an xray without speaking to them first and B) any time Toast's had an xray or scan in the past I have to take her in at 9am, she's on a waiting list for her slot which could be any time then I pick her back up around 4 or 5pm... this always results in Toast having painful cystitis for a few days after due to the stress of being there for so long so I wanted to ask if I could just take her in for the xray and pick her up right after it to save the her being in pain and stressed.

My vets are quite busy but I've never had this much trouble getting a hold of someone to discuss something..

I'll just phone on Monday and ask to have it booked and go from there I suppose.

think I would go with Adelles idea &ask for a telephone consultation.
Ask the receptionist what time consultations start &finish. Tell them you will ring back at xx:xx time -about 15mins after morning consultations have finished. (my vets usually over runs so give them a bit of an overlap). Tell them you'll wait on the line whilst they get the vet, you want to book your guinea in for an xray but need a little advice before doing it.
Mention you dont want to stress your guinea out needlessly by bringing her in again just for a pre xray check-you have taken her in recently &been seen by the vet so I wouldn't think this should be an issue.

Dont get arsey with them but give your voice a big dose of authority &theyll probably be more inclined to fit in a quick conversation.

Maybe even ask for the head nurse as they may be able to answer your concerns or pass it up to the vet if they are unsure.

Remember, they are the service ... You are their customer.... The customer is (allegedly) always right.
They have an obligation to treat an animal to protect its welfare.

If it was me I have been known to turn up animal-less to the vets &just mill around until a vet is free to advise.
To be fair tho they have always telephoned back when promised though.
To be forgotten that many times isn't acceptable &I would mention you've been fobbed off too many times &need a straight answer... Now.

My ellie had heart issues &one vet wouldn't accept my suggestion of heart problems. I went back &seen a different vet at the same practice &mentioned her heart &the vet listened via stethiscope for ages, told me she had a murmur &one of the valves wasn't working properly. She then started on heart meds. But I had to be persistent &insist on her issues. I was just lucky the different vet was open to suggestion &could hear /distinguish the heart murmur (which is very difficult apparently)

Good luck :)
Keep us updated. Xx

That's Toast back from her xray. I didn't make an appointment to discuss the results as there wasn't a vet available until 630pm and in didn't want to keep Toast in there that long so I've to go back and discuss it on Wednesday. The vet just said that he'd had a quick look at the xray and couldn't see anything wrong... so that's good but still left with the issue of what's causing her hooting and fast breathing if it's not a URI and it's not an issue with her heart/lungs... :hmm:

How is Toast doing now? My guinea pig occasionally makes strange noises too. It usually lasts for a couple of days then goes away again. Happens every two or three weeks.

I switched from supposedly dust free hay to proper dust extracted hay and it's made such a big difference in her breathing. She very occasionally makes the hooting sound so I think she's just extremely sensitive to even tiny bits of dust, but it's much better now thanks

I'm going to switch back to Oxbow Timothy Hay to see if that will make a difference, as I'm using Alfalfa king timothy hay at the moment, which is really dusty. I noticed that her noisy breathing (a bit like a duck quacking) started about a week after I first got the Alfalfa King timothy hay. If her noisy breathing carries on, I will change the meadow hay.

Alfalfa King timothy hay is ridiculously dusty, even makes me cough. Dust Free hay have timothy hay just like it except it's completely dust free obviously
