Toast Needs To Be Spayed (i Think).

Just off the phone to the vets, Toast has came round and she's sitting on the nurses knee with a hot water bottle getting a cuddle.

She wasn't bloated so went ahead with the spay, then had her teeth burred down slightly too. All going well I should have her home for 3ish. Thanks everyone xx

Sending Toast healing vibes. I've everything crossed for her. Hope she has a very speedy recovery. :hug:for you, I admire how dedicated you are to your piggys.

My vet just phoned there (it was the nurse before) to say she's doing well, moving about and stuffing her face.

He told me there was an "anaesthetic incident" during the procedure though.
10 minutes in Toast stopped breathing for herself for around 1-2 minutes I'm sure he said. He said it's nothing to worry about now and it won't affect her but it's something for them to be aware of for any other procedures in the future. My heart sank, has anyone had this happen or heard of this? It was gas that was used.

Glad to hear she is up and about and especially that she is stuffing her face, which is a very good sign.

Piggies, like other animals and people can stop breathing under anaesthetic if they go a little too deep. This can happen whatever the type of anaesthetic being used. If this happens when using gas the gas can instantly be turned down (or off) thereby increasing the amount of oxygen in the mix, which in turn reduces the depth of anaesthesia. While the piggy is not breathing for herself the vet can ventilate her using the mask. This incident should not affect her in any way. It would have been a bit hairy for the vet at the time tho! but you obviously have a very good vet supported by an equally good nusing team who acted promptly.

Hope her recovery continues to go well:)

Thank you so much for that.

I have an amazing vet, he spoke very highly of the nurses who noticed Toast had stopped breathing and dealt with it very quickly.

She is currently walking about munching on hay and a bit of pepper, I'm absolutely amazed at how well she is doing, piggies are such strong little animals!

Oh that's fabulous, must admit I couldn't remember when she was going in, but so glad it went well :D

The anaesthetic must have been a holding breath moment but glad she pulled through.

Healing vibes for a full &speedy recovery from the girls &I  :luv:
They're for both beans &toast

Xx

As well as being spayed yesterday Toast also had her molars burred down slightly.
Her front teeth have never been an issue but I've just looked at them now, and something seems different. I don't have a before picture, but do her top teeth look weird to anyone? I thought they looked kind of uneven in length if that makes sense? I'm worried that they may have broke or snapped as she's been chewing the cage (She's not happy about being separated from Beans). The tips also look as if they're almost see through? Whereas the rest look white..?

Am I just over reacting? She's lost 45g since yesterday, which I know isn't anything to be overly worried about but I'm paranoid and over think everything

I'm afraid I don't know much about teeth. Sorry. I think front ones can look off when the back ones have been out of sync. Is she eating ok?

She's up running about and eating almost normal, but she's doing a bit of a slow chew, dropping pellets and kind of chewing to one side - but not every time she eats. She hasn't lost more than 45g since yesterday so not too worried right now.

Would the pain of the spay (she is on moderate pain relief) be enough to cause that?

Despite some slight dental issues, Toast is doing amazing after her spay yesterday. Within an hour of getting her home she was out and about munching on hay with her sister through the bars.

I set up a little 2x2 for the first night, she's now in a 2x3 for the next few days then I'll put her back in with Beans.

Whilst I admire their surgical skills, their hairdressing skills could use some work :))

Thanks to everyone for all the help and support :luv:

That's good work from them. Higher up than when my bjmnle had it done and you don't have staples to deal with (made me feel a bit queasy). Here's hoping she's right as rain soon enough
