We have a young piggy (1.5 years) with ovarian cysts. Hair loss on both sides, quiet, selective eating (teeth ok) has had an ultrasound which didn't show much as her tummy as very full, but obviously has cysts. Stroppy attitude, lots of rumbling and bossiness (before she went quiet that is).
She went for a spay today but the procedure was aborted because of a reaction to the anaesthetic. My hubby dealt with the appointment, he said....
"She had all pre-meds then when they started the anathesia she had breathing difficulties, due to possibly phlegm or saliva in throat which does happen but isn't common. They are risk averse and reversed everything. They also struggled with IV which is just how they apply medicine like pain killers. Basically putting a needle in vein. Said that vet is really skilled and couldn't do it. Tried all four limbs. They may be bruised and used arnica to bring it out."
I'm really against putting her through an anaesthetic again after this, but know we are limited in options. From what I've read the injections wear off over time and are really costly (we are insured but don't have much left now on the allowance). Implant is not very effective. I'm guessing she is uncomfortable as she is on metacam and quieter when we tried her without it.
I don't know if the reaction could happen again or if it would be better another time. If it was due to the vet (the practice is not exotic but the vet themselves is).
We are in Kent and open to recommendations if anyone has success spaying recently and who with. Happy to travel.
