I noticed that my guinea Sketch makes a low purring sound when either rubbed firmly across the back to her rump or when she is rubbed on her stomach. She is still while she purrs, and then usually goes back to her usual happy peeping. I've read different opinions on what purring means. Does anyone have concrete ideas as to whether it means they like it or not?

Thanks!

:D I believe it means that they like it! If she didn't like it, she would protest and move away. You are very lucky to hear it!:tu: In nearly 20 years of piggie-keeping,I have never heard anything that I would call Purring!

I've never heard purring and have also heard mixed opinions on it, perhaps there are different tones of purr hence the differing opinions? No idea.

Cute sounds but to me that's more of a "stop touching me please" although others may have the opposite opinion.

I'm afraid that @Squeakz is correct. Your piggy is telling you that he's not keen on being stroked. You may find that they also make this noise if they hear something like a phone ringing that they don't like.

The noise of pleasure is more like purring.

This guinea is not mine but this is exactly how Sketch sounds sometimes...what I mean by purring.

Pippin does this sometimes..... my daughter says she is telling her she isnt happy....

That sounds like a, "Stop it!" purr to me. A lot of pigs also do dislike being patted all the way down to the rump (or being touched on the rump generally.) At least most of mine have!

Mine do that when there is a sound they don't like. (Usually me dropping something or other ) they then run and hide.

When they like it it will be a slightly deeper tone , last longer and be more of a rumble - the noise your piggy is making is the one my Bea used to make when she heard a strange noise that she didn't like.

Teddy used to purr a lot, and I mean A LOT (almost everytime I petted him), but it was a different kind of sound. It was like deeper and it lasted quite long. At first I was really confused but I realized he really liked it because he used to do it at the same time he layed down comfortably! So I suppose that's what in the end gives you the answer, the way they act while doing whatever sound it is.

ps. Thanks Tan for confirming me what I thought!
