Thinking Of Changing To Fleece!

the fleece that I have fits perfect in my cage when it's folded in half, it needs to be doubled. Then I have towels underneath. As for messy hay, I have a litter tray under the hay rack so it doesn't go everywhere :) think a few members do this, it works well!

That's a great idea! Could I see a picture of yours so I could get some ideas please

I changed to fleece about a month ago and I would definitely recommend it, I had one specifically made for my cage with an absorbent liner sewn in. It needs changing about every 4 days but is so easy to clean on non cage change days I just sweep it out with a brush and pan

Is it fixed too the cage? Or just left loose

Fleece all the way for me. Fleece on top, towel below, poo pick twice a day change twice a week :)

It looks fab! Glad they like it. One of my piggies Ginger loves a freshly changed fleece so much he always does some happy popcorning just walking on it!

I use tea bag bedding I get big bales of it for £8 00 last me ages

A quick question as I have decided to go fleece- I hope you don't mind me using this thread: Can I tumble dry fleece? Thank you, I have been on the link above about washing etc.

I don't see why not - I have never needed to though because the fleece comes out the washer near enough dry :)

Just some info for you ;)
Fleece needs to be changed every three to four days, without a fabric softener, but with non bio detergent and white vinegar(optional) at 60 degrees. Before first use you have to wash the fleece without any detergent at least three times to allow it to remove the water barrier. You can check this has been done successfully if a drop of water on the fleece sinks through, not stays on the top. If it stays, you need to wash it again.

Fleece also needs an absorbent layer underneath to hold the urine. This can be towels, which I find great. Or puppy pads. You can also buy cage liners which are fleece, but built in absorbent layer. You can buy these from:
http://ziggyspiggies.webs.com

Fleece needs to be spot cleaned (remove poop) at least once a day.

To avoid clogging up washing machine you will need to brush down the fleece and shake it to remove loose hay and hairs. And optional would be to have a horse wash bag, found on amazon/ebay which allows fleece to be washed well, but all hay and hairs keep contained in the bag.

Thank you! I was also going yo ask if it needed washing more than once before first use so I will do the drop of water test. (I would normally hang outside to dry but we are without a washing line at the mo).

Has anyone successfully managed to train their piggies to use a litter tray? Mine tend to wee in their huts so those I put in trays, and they always wee where they eat hay so will put a tray under that too in an attempt to minimise wee on the fleece!

I once thought Edward had trained himself to use the litter tray I had put in. I posted on here and had a little brag about it,the same day he stopped using it and to this day will wee in his hay giving me a smug look as he does. Need I say more :D

Hah how funny, I put corner trays in the cage and after a day I thought wow they're using them! They were, but when I moved their huts the sawdust was sodden, hence the trays under the huts now! Even when I start using fleece I think the whole cage will be taken over with trays full of sawdust anyway- counterproductive?!

yes I'm afraid it probably is after my upsetting experience with 'smug' boy I would give the litter trays a miss and just let them happily wee on their fleece

I'm pro fleece! I have two pairs of boys and I changed them to shavings after an op as I thought it would be less faffing than fleece - no poop scooping twice a day etc - but I've hated the shavings! They are messy, the boys manage to spill it out over their c&c...and I've ended up cleaning the cages out once a week, which with two 5x5 c&cs I would filled a whole bin bag in shavings

The fleece was costly to begin with but I've built my collection up slowly, and the fleece I bought a year ago is showing no signs of wear :) in fact being back looking at everyone's pretty fleece cages has made me want to change my boys back over right now! Good job I have a hamster who can benefit from the shavings!

I have fleece and litter trays.Have a ground sheet then where the cage is covered have towel, everywhere else is newspaper.Litter trays are under the covered part of the cage and most wees are done in there. This is why I get away with newspaper under majority of the fleece.Poo everywhere but that is easy to clean up.The litter trays have bedding then hay in.

Thank you. I have gone for it and the cage is now lined with fleece (not pretty I'm afraid, just plain brown)! Harris jumped around when he got in and they both seemed happy with it! I've put a tray under their hay rack, one under their log house, and a corner litter tray which I've put a blanket over for a bit of privacy! I've put sawdust and cosi n' dry in the trays so that's still getting a bit messy bit I had shavings left so thought I might as well use it.

What bedding do you use in your litter trays? I'm wondering what I could use in the trays that will be absorbent.

It's only been a few hours but so far no wee on the fleece! As I have 2 little girls (actual humans, not GPs) and work I want to minimise the amount of washing I have to do! But wanted to change from wood shavings because they somehow get all over the house!

Aubiose is good.Boss uses snowflake I think and says it is really good.Have used finacard before as well.

I switched to fleece 3 years ago and have never looked back. Cheap fleeces from IKEA or Primark doubled over or hand made into sort of liners with puppy pads underneath. I spot clean daily, change pee pads daily and change the main fleece twice a week. I put it into an old duvet cover for washing. Hot wash with fairy non bio and white vinegar in the rinse instead of softener. Simples and the piggies love it.
