So, I found out the other day that cat metacam is now licensed for guinea pigs.

Ellen went to the vets on Friday for a suspected uti. Sadly, her usual vet is on holiday until tomorrow so she had to see one of the other vets.

As suspected, she does have a uti so she is on septrin and metacam. This vet however prescribed her with cat metacam where as her usual vet prsscribes dog metacam.

Up until 10 months ago, Ellen had IC so was having a small dose of dog metacam daily for almost 3 years. She absolutely loved the taste and I could give it her in her cage as she would just run up to the syringe and take it.

I would have thought that cat metacam would taste the same BUT she hates it and it's a battle to get it in to her :( Is it because it tastes different or is it because cat metacam is weaker than dog metacam so you have to give more?

I have lots of dog metacam at home and I'm considering giving her that as I hate seeing her struggle :(

I 'm wondering if more vets are going to start prescribing cat metacam now it's been licensed. I've also noticed that cat metacam only has a 14 day shelf life once opened compared to 6 months shelf life for dog metacam.

Does anyone know any other differences between dog and cat metacam?

I actually thought it was only the strength buddy not a taste issue. Is it the same brand?

I agree with Lee. I thought it was the concentration that changed otherwise everything was the same. Perhaps she is just being stubborn? Donald won't take any medication well even metacam which I've never had a problem giving to any other piggies before

Thank you both. Yes, it's the same brand and it looks and smells the same.

May be she is just being stubborn as she's on 1ml of septrin and isn't taking that very well either. She's normally such a good girl at taking meds :(

We've had dog meloxicam for Theo post neutering (he only needed 2 doses of 0.2mls then was fine) and for hefty Clover's dodgy leg (once a day for a week starting at 0.2mls then reducing to 0.1mls, then we decided with the vet once she'd got the joint moving a bit she'd be ok unless she gets joint pain in winter), and cat meloxicam for dainty little Puggle's bloaty tummy aches (0.3mls plus zantac when she gets tummy pains). Apart from strength it looks/smells the same but cat metacam is 3x weaker I think? We got Loxicom brand of both.

Yes Ellen was taking 0.2ml of dog metacam once daily for her IC which she was fine with where as she's on 0.4ml of cat metacam for her uti. I'm wondering if she doesn't like the higher quantity

0.4 ml of cat metacam is a tiny dose. She would need 0.6 ml to equate to same as 0.2 ml of dog metacam

Thank you Debbie. I think it's because she isn't in pain or anything but would you recommend I give her 0.6ml? I'm hoping that my regular vet will carry on prescribing the dog metacam

So she is just on it as an anti-inflammatory? I still think any dose under 0.2 ml (0.6 ml cat Metacam) is barely worth giving.

I think so. It's hard as it was my parents who took her to the vets but she didn't show any discomfort on examination and her bladder was nice and soft. She started off doing the odd squeaky wee but that stopped almost as soon as she started the antibiotics. I don't mind increasing the cat metacam if the dose is too low

If she seems fine then stick with what the vet prescribed. You always have the scope to increase it. if necessary xx
