I don’t know if this belongs here, but I was very shocked and saddened by recent events in Texas… An elementary school was shot up by a 18 year old man, resulting in at least 18 children, 2 adults, and the shooter dead, making 21 dead in total. Heres an article on some of the latest news if interested. At least 18 children, 2 adults dead after shooting at Texas elementary school

I know its a sad and gruesome topic, but it needs to be talked about and have something done about it.

I heard this on the news this morning. It's so shocking. From the UK it's hard to understand why so many Americans defend how accessible guns are over there when things like this continue to happen.

Agreed, but even bringing up a topic such as gun violence and access to guns being restricted could probably get you shot here, especially in the more dangerous areas of the US. A Texas resident 18 or older but under 21 won’t be allowed to purchase a handgun through an FFL (Federal Firearms License) dealer but that person can purchase a handgun from another Texas resident. Meanwhile, when it comes to long guns, the federal government doesn’t restrict possession for someone under 18. Its really messed up and there needs to be more regulations but the presidency wont risk their ego about it, but like I said, its really controversial, let alone political.

It's hard to believe that at 18 people can buy a gun but not alcohol! I know it's very much part of the culture over there and is seen as a representation of freedom but kids living in fear of being shot at school doesn't sound much like freedom to me. I understand that people feel strongly on both sides but a lot of the arguments for guns do just seem insane to people living outside the USA

Even as an American, I find the whole gun thing kinda ridiculous. I understand the whole hunting thing, but my boyfriend goes hunting and he doesn’t even use a gun, he uses a bow! Theres a lot of alternatives to guns and I wish people would understand that rather than argue. They need better background checks than just handing a gun to someone, like a felon! It really scares me what this place has become. I really hope they get the handle on this, rather than POTUS saying “This is so sad, but we aren’t gonna do anything about it.” I’d rather him say nothing than anything at this point.
