My female guinea pig Midnight has suddenly gained a ton of weight. I was holding her on Wednesday and she was fine, now on Sunday she has gained a ton of weight that wasn’t there on Wednesday. She is about 3 years old and is the only guinea pig in the household. We got her from a pet store 3 years ago where she was being kept with all females, we changed nothing in her diet and everything is normal besides her weight gain. Did she somehow get pregnant? Or did something else happen?

Hi and welcome to our friendly forum!:wel:

How much weight has she gained? Do you weigh her weekly so you can keep an eye on her weight? The only way for a sow to become pregnant is if they have had contact with a un-neutered boar. Has she been on a play date with a full boar? Take her to a vet if you are at all worried. A vet would rather see an anxious owner with a well piggie than a ill piggie and an owner who has left it too late.

Hi!

Your sow cannot be pregnant if she has not been in contact with an unneutered boar within the last 10 weeks. ;)

Have you had your girl on the lawn a lot lately? Plenty of fresh grass on top of a normal diet can lead to weight gain.

Please have a feel of her belly: it is visibly larger, bloated, hard to the touch and hollow sounding when you gently knock against it? In this case, you need to see a vet ASAP.

Otherwise please have her vet checked tomorrow. There are some health issues that can cause sudden weight gain, including a fluid build-up in the body or fast growing ovarian cysts, but they all require a thorough hands-on vet examination.

Please weigh any guinea pig once weekly throughout its life. Whenever you have concerns about health or weight, you switch to weighing daily at the same time. This is part of regular leath management and allows you to write down the weight gain/loss, so you have more of a basis to know when you need to see a vet and can tell them how much weight your piggy has gained/lost in which space of time. This helps them massively when diagnosing. ;)
