I’ve read that straw isn’t the best as a bedding as it can potentially hurt them but is chopped straw as a bedding okay?

I have 5 free roaming in a shed and I’m worried they are going to get really cold. I was thinking of packing the bedding up like a stable to keep out the cold if possible.
It’s already insulated.

They have huge piles of hay but trash it very quickly and it’s proving very expensive.

Any thoughts as to whether this is an okay i
idea?

Thanks

I know some use raviera which is chopped straw.
Straw has no nutritional value though so if they do try to eat it then it’s doing nothing for them. Hay is better bedding as they can also eat it.
Perhaps as a compromise you could layer some straw for insulation at the bottom and then top it with hay so they can still eat freely?

Personally I avoid all straw though and my animals are also outside in sheds. I buy bales of meadow from a local farm, large square bales for £8 per bale which last 4-6 weeks with my five animals (two rabbits and three piggies) as bedding (thick in winter) and feed.

Do you have snugglesafe heat pads? They are a must for outdoor piggies!
