Hi,I have a bit of a problem,I want to buy hay in bulk, I found a huge bale of meadow hay in jollyes for a reasonable price and want to buy it but my problem is storage. I have a 6 x 8 shed, but it's not waterproof and I would like to store the hay in there. Any ideas? Storing indoors is not an option. Thanks for any replies.

That would be great, my main concern was ventilation. The bag really is huge though,so I would need quite a large box.

The plastic storage bins are popular at places like B&Q as well and come in a variety of sizes. By doing small ventilation holes on the side it would hopefully stop the water coming it

I'll have a look in argos. I'm worried about rats/mice out there too I have found a rat out there before.

I had mice in my shed when we had it (got rid of the shed last year) but they never bothered with the hay... mind you it was spring/summer that we had a problem so maybe they would have been in the hay if it were as cold out as it is now

I would still worry about rats in there, when I kept hens I had problems keeping them out of that shed

I store a bale in a green wheelie bin. There is about half a bale in the bin that you see and the big bin bag is what I use to pick it up from the farm to keep the car tidy, an old duvet cover does just as well. I have never had a problem with condensation or mould so long as I keep the bin about six inches from the wall (a heat sink in summer) A bale is around four to six pounds.
Just google hay for sale in your area. Most farms will sell you a bale and it's far cheaper than shop bought. Your piggies will love the luxury of extra hay to burrow under.

The hay I'm buying is around £8 but it's a proper sized bale, like a bale you get from a farmer I'm thinking about buying two.

We have used a wheelie bin, but came home one wet and windy day to find that the lid had flipped up! We now use one of the large plastic garden storage boxes. One farm bale drops in perfectly. Ours is on a paved area behind the house and we have no problems.

I will definitely try a garden storage box. I'm going to look in argos tomorrow.

I noticed that wilko have a 145L storage bin on wheels for £15 at the moment though they are definitely not as big as the garden storage or wheelie bin

Don't know if there is a wilko in Ireland I've never heard of it.

Oh no sorry just had a look at their website and they deliver to Northern Ireland but not Ireland by the looks of it. I think the bin would have been too small for you still as I wasn't sure whether it was quite big enough for a bale

I could put it in a few boxes,if I need to. The shed is completely empty there's plenty of storage space.

I have put a clasp thingy on the lid to keep it close as the yard is in a wind tunnel. Sorry it isn't visible on the pictures.

Hi, can I ask you how much jolleys charge for their hay & how many kilos it is? I've been getting meadow hay from 'the range' 4 kilos for 3.50. Its in a bag 24 inch x 12 x 6. I store this under a bed.

I need to check, will probably be going next week. It's around £8 if I remember correctly but it is the same size as the large bale of shavings that you can get in a co-op hope this helps.

@Andrea I just got the hay today, the bale is huge I think it was £8.40 I don't know how much in kg but I can send a picture if you want.

Do you have some scales you can pop it on to see how heavy it is? To save you putting a photo on. Popped in joleys the other day but couldn't see any huge bags of hay , I wonder if your branch is bigger.

sorry I don't have any scales I got a photo. Excuse the mess The fish tank is going today.

I think it's good,my rabbit that is very fussy with his hay eats it so it must be ok and the piggies like it too.
